Chapter 97
Serenity’s heart sank at Mrs. Deli’s words, the heaviness of her grandmother’s condition weighing on her. She had always known her grandparents to be selfish, but hearing this, it felt even more cruel. Serenity nodded slowly, her gaze falling to the floor as she absorbed the information.
“Thank you for telling me, Mrs. Deli,” Serenity replied quietly, feeling the weight of it all. “We’ll be careful, and we’ll make sure they don’t manipulate us again.”
Mrs. Deli gave a knowing, concerned look, her expression softening as she placed a hand on Serenity’s. “I’ve seen this happen before. Don’t let them use you, dear. You deserve better. If you need any help, just let me know. I may not have much, but I can always be a friend.”
Zachary, who had been quietly observing, gave a subtle nod in agreement. His protective nature flared up as he looked at Serenity. He could sense the turmoil she was trying to hide, but he knew she wouldn’t let it get the best of her. “Thank you, Mrs. Deli,” he said, his voice firm but polite. “We’ll make sure to take care of things.”
After dinner, they exchanged some more pleasantries before leaving. As they walked back to the car, Serenity’s thoughts were clouded with a mix of frustration and resolve. The last thing she wanted was to fall into the trap her grandparents and uncles had set up, but she wasn’t going to let them get away with it.
Zachary opened the door for Serenity and let her into the car before sliding in himself. He didn’t say anything at first, letting her gather her thoughts.
Finally, Serenity broke the silence. “They’ve had everything handed to them. My grandparents didn’t even care when my parents passed. They took the insurance money and split it without a thought for Liberty and me. And now, they’ll probably expect us to pay for their mom’s surgery,” she said bitterly.
Zachary placed a hand on her shoulder, offering her a silent show of support. “We’ll handle it,” he said simply. “One step at a time.”
As the car started to pull away, Serenity let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. She was grateful for Zachary’s presence—his calm demeanor helped her steady herself. But deep inside, she knew the battle ahead wouldn’t be easy. The stakes were high, and she was determined to bring justice to her family, no matter the cost.
