Chapter 32
Last night, Serenity stayed up late, waiting for Zachary to come home so she could make plans to shop for groceries the next morning. She had already called Nana to get a headcount, and it turned out Zachary’s brothers and cousins would also be attending the family dinner. Nana saw Serenity as part of the York family now, and she wanted to gather everyone to introduce the family tree.
Since there was going to be a lot of food, Serenity knew she couldn’t carry all the groceries by herself, so she asked Zachary to drive her to the market.
Just like the other day, Zachary was startled awake by Serenity’s morning call at six o’clock sharp. Feeling grumpy from the early wake-up, Zachary bit his tongue to stop himself from snapping at her.
“Mr. York,” Serenity’s clear voice cut through his irritation.
With a frown, Zachary grumbled, “Give me ten minutes.”
“Sure. I made some pancakes. Come and have some when you’re washed up. We can get to the market after breakfast.”
Zachary asked, “What time did you get up?” It was only six in the morning, yet she already had breakfast prepared.
“About five.”
It took time for one person to prepare a feast, so Serenity had started early. Without another word, Zachary ended the call.
She clearly didn’t take the family event lightly, and Zachary appreciated her effort.
Ten minutes later, Zachary emerged dressed in casual clothes and headed to the dining table. Serenity was enjoying her breakfast and, with a smile, said, “Try my pancakes. My sister says I make the best pancakes.”
Zachary took a glance at the spread. The pancakes looked delicious, so he finished an entire plate. They were indeed good. He felt fortunate to have someone who could cook so well.
Serenity cleared the table and started washing the dishes in the kitchen.
“Mr. York, do you only wear dark-colored clothes?” Serenity asked.
Zachary didn’t answer, which was his way of admitting it.
“What’s your size? I’ll add some color to your wardrobe next time I go shopping. You have a stern face to begin with, and it’s hard to approach you when you wear dark colors all the time.”
Seeing the coldness in his eyes, Zachary’s voice turned icy as he responded, “Stay out of my wardrobe choices!” He loved dark colors, so if she didn’t like it, she could look away.
Sensing his displeasure, Serenity quickly apologized, “I’m sorry. I went too far. To each their own. I shouldn’t force my habits on you.”
Zachary didn’t reply and left the conversation there. He walked to the balcony, the calming view of the mini garden helping to ease the tension on his face.
A few minutes later, Serenity grabbed her purse and called, “Let’s go, Mr. York.”
Zachary returned from the balcony without a word, quietly took his keys, and the couple left the house together, careful not to mention the brief uncomfortable moment from earlier.
As they went to the market, Serenity’s meticulous nature showed. She had already prepared a shopping list and planned the menu for the day, making it easy to grab the ingredients needed. Zachary was impressed by her attention to detail and her efficient conduct in life.
