Chapter 55
Serenity stood in front of the door, feeling a mix of confusion and frustration. It hadn’t taken long for her to realize that the door was locked from the inside. Had Zachary come home before her and locked the door, assuming she was already inside?
She wasn’t sure, but there was no way she was standing out here all night. Serenity hesitated for a moment, debating whether to call Zachary or just find another way in. She wasn’t in the mood to argue about something so trivial, but then again, it was a bit odd.
As she stood there, she caught herself sighing. After a long day, she wasn’t looking forward to dealing with unnecessary complications. Maybe she could wait for him to come back if he wasn’t inside, or she could try calling.
Her hand hovered over her phone, but before she could make a decision, the light from the hallway flicked on. The sound of footsteps followed. The door creaked open slowly, and Zachary’s voice came through, slightly surprised. “You’re back?”
Serenity looked up, startled. “I thought you locked the door from the inside. I didn’t expect you to be here.”
Zachary raised an eyebrow, sensing something wasn’t quite right. “I wasn’t here. I just got back. Maybe it’s just the latch acting up.” He stepped aside, motioning for her to enter.
With a soft laugh, Serenity stepped in, finally relieved to be home. It wasn’t a big issue, but she couldn’t help feeling slightly annoyed by the small inconvenience. Still, it was a comfort to know that whatever happened, they would get through it together.
