Chapter 37
“Mr. York, I’ll do it.” Serenity gestured for Zachary to step aside as she took charge of the dishwashing. Zachary, holding his tongue, moved aside and handed her the apron, but he didn’t leave the kitchen. Standing in the corner, he watched as Serenity took care of the dishes and remarked, “We should have the next family event at a hotel. It’ll save us the trouble of cleaning.”
“Okay,” Serenity agreed. She had only gone through the trouble of cooking a big meal to impress her in-laws, as it was the first time both families were meeting.
“What did Nana say to you?” Zachary asked suddenly.
Pausing, Serenity turned her attention to him, their eyes meeting. With a playful glint in her eyes, she responded, “Nana asked if we’re sleeping in separate rooms. She said since we’re married, I should be bold and take the lead to throw myself at you, strip you naked, and bang you.”
Zachary froze, not knowing how to respond. “That certainly was something that would come out of Nana’s mouth,” he muttered.
“Nana also said that she hopes to get a great-granddaughter next year. She emphasized ‘great-granddaughter,’ mentioning that we should keep trying until we get a girl. She said she would give me her life savings if I give her a girl.”
Zachary’s eyes widened. His Nana’s life savings were worth billions. Clearly, Grandma May had high hopes for Serenity. “Did your Nana and Gramps ever have a daughter?” he asked.
Shaking his head, Zachary replied, “The last woman born into the York family was my great-grandfather’s sister. She died unexpectedly before the age of five, and since then, there have been no girls in the family.”
There were nine boys in Zachary’s generation. While Serenity continued washing dishes, she smiled and said, “No wonder Nana is so generous with her life savings. It sounds like mission impossible.”
Zachary’s mind immediately jumped to conclusions. He thought Serenity was after Nana’s wealth. He believed that she had coaxed Nana into pressuring him into marriage and was now trying to manipulate him for his grandmother’s assets.
Serenity noticed his sudden silence and turned to look at him, only to see a sullen look on his face. Zachary’s eyes had turned steely, and when he caught her gaze, he turned away, walking out of the kitchen without a word.
Confused by his reaction, Serenity muttered to herself, “That’s baffling. He asked the question but gave me an attitude when I answered it. As if I would throw myself at him. He’s like an ice king. I’d freeze to death before I could even lay a finger on him.”
She mistakenly thought Zachary’s sudden hostility had something to do with Nana’s teasing. Zachary, however, stayed in his room for a long while, leaving Serenity to shrug it off. She didn’t have time to baby a grown man like him.
