Chapter 28
“It’s only a minor issue, so I can’t be bothered to submit a claim. Why the sudden question, Zachary?”
Zachary fell silent for a moment before responding, “The woman who scratched your car this morning is the sister of my grandmother’s lifesaver. The sisters only have each other, and the woman is a housewife without an income. They’re worried they won’t be able to pay for the repairs to your car.”
Duncan was surprised. “Talk about a coincidence. I can’t believe she’s the sister of your grandmother’s lifesaver. How did you find out?”
Zachary quickly lied. “My grandmother is very fond of her lifesaver and often seeks her company. Today, Nana noticed she seemed upset, so she asked her what happened, and that’s when Hunt told her about it.”
“Hunt? Is that her last name? The woman who damaged my car is Liberty Hunt. What’s the name of your grandma’s lifesaver?”
“Serenity Hunt.”
Duncan chuckled. “They must be sisters, then. Alright, I’ll drop it. Since she’s your grandma’s lifesaver’s sister, I won’t press her for the full amount. The money’s nothing to me, but I can’t just let it go either. She might end up scratching someone else’s car if she doesn’t learn a lesson from this.”
At thirty-five, Duncan Lewis was the fourth son of the prominent Lewis family. Although he hadn’t taken over the family business, Duncan had made a name for himself, founding Lewis & Co. and managing several subsidiaries. He was a self-made billionaire.
Duncan was known for his straightforward and loyal nature, but he had a rough past, having walked a fine line between both sides of the law during his younger years. The scar on his face was a testament to that past. Despite his wealth and status, he never bothered to remove the scar, believing it gave him character.
“Since you want to teach her a lesson, you can claim some of the damages from her. But, if it’s not too much trouble, I hope you’ll cut her some slack for Nana’s sake and lower the amount.”
For men like Zachary and Duncan, ten thousand dollars wasn’t a significant sum. Even though Liberty didn’t have a job, she could borrow the money from others to cover the cost.
“It’s not a lot, just ten thousand dollars. I’ll have her pay half. A few thousand bucks really hurts for a housewife like her, but it’ll serve as a reminder to be more careful on the road and not scratch other people’s cars.”
Duncan was relieved that his car was parked on the side of the road. If the accident had occurred in the middle of traffic, an innocent child’s life could have been at risk.
“Thanks, Duncan.”
“It’s nothing. Come to think of it, your grandma seems quite fond of that Serenity girl. Even though Serenity saved her life, your grandma could have given her a lump sum as a reward. So why does she stay in touch with her?”
Zachary replied faintly, “In a way, Nana’s accusing us of not spending enough time with her.”
Grandma May had always hoped her grandsons would settle down soon, wanting to hear the laughter of great-grandchildren filling the house. She had even joked about offering fifty million for a great-grandson and five hundred million for a great-granddaughter.
The York family hadn’t been blessed with daughters or granddaughters. Grandma May had longed for a granddaughter, but her daughters-in-law had only given her grandsons. Her grandsons were now her only hope for great-granddaughters.
Duncan paused before speaking again, “You know how the elderly are. When my nana was still alive, she’d badger me every day to get married. My brothers and I got so fed up that we started avoiding home. Now that she’s gone, we miss her nagging.”
People often didn’t realize what they had until it was gone.
Duncan, the only single member of his family, was constantly pressured by his entire family, including his young nephew, to find a wife.
“I mean, you’re thirty-five, pushing forty. Of course, they’re going to be on your back about getting married…”
