Chapter 66 “Josh!”
Zachary was feeling annoyed. It was undeniable that his pride was at stake. Serenity was his wife, and if anything were to happen to her, it would be a hit to his dignity. There was no way he could stand by and let her get harassed. “Fine, fine. I’ll leave you to it. It’s all for your pride and dignity, right?” Josh joked, his tone light but knowing that Zachary’s concerns were more than just surface-level. “I’ll look into it. Your wife is Serenity Hunt, right? You could’ve just asked Duncan for help. As your administrative executive, I have a mountain of work, and I don’t even have time to grab a drink of water.”
Zachary stood up and walked over to pour himself a glass of water. “Drink up. I don’t want to hear you say you’re too busy to drink water.” Josh snorted in amusement. “Well, that took you long enough.”
Zachary glanced over at him. “I thought you weren’t thirsty. You would’ve poured yourself a drink if you were. When have you ever asked for permission? Are we buddies or not?” Josh laughed. “Duncan can’t keep a secret for the life of him.”
Zachary smirked. “That’s true. He can’t keep his mouth shut.” Josh shuddered at the thought. “Don’t forget to get me detailed information on all her family members.” Zachary’s tone grew more serious. He had learned some about Serenity’s family, and he had a sinking feeling that trouble was on the horizon for the sisters.
As for Liberty’s issues, Zachary could wash his hands of them, but when it came to his wife, things were different. He wasn’t going to let anyone harm Serenity, and he needed to understand her background fully before he could step in. “You can’t win a battle without knowing your own strengths and your enemy’s,” he thought to himself. Zachary had never entered a battle without knowing what he was up against. The Hunts could do whatever they wanted, but Serenity was under his protection, and he’d make sure no one took advantage of her.
Josh looked curious. “Doesn’t your wife only have a sister?” Zachary hesitated for a moment. “She has a bunch of money-hungry relatives.” Josh raised an eyebrow. “No wonder you’ve kept your identity and marriage a secret. Things are bound to get messy with that kind of family.”
Zachary didn’t respond. He didn’t hide his identity and marriage because of the relatives. His main goal was to get to know Serenity for who she truly was. When Nana had insisted that he marry her, he had been led to believe Serenity was a manipulative woman. He was quick to judge her based on his own preconceptions, but now, he was starting to rethink his approach. He knew that Serenity needed to prove her character, but he also understood that he had been too harsh in the past. He would come clean when the time was right. If Serenity was worth it, they would build a life together, and the marriage would become real, not just on paper.
Josh took a couple of sips of water, then looked at Zachary, asking, “Anything else?”
“That’s all. Get back to work,” Zachary replied. Josh placed the glass down and stood up to leave. Just as he was about to walk out, Zachary threw him another question. “Josh, how do you apologize when you’re wrong about a woman?”
Josh paused, then shot him a mischievous grin. “What’s your mouth for? To say sorry, obviously. Do you need me to teach you how?” Zachary sighed in frustration. “I’m serious, Josh.”
Josh raised his hands in mock surrender. “Alright, alright. Are you asking me what kind of gift is appropriate for an apology? Women love flowers, jewelry, perfume, skincare stuff—something along those lines. Give her something, and she’ll get the message.”
