Chapter 85
Zachary’s gaze lingered on the balcony garden as he spoke quietly, “You can grow the whole yard with roses when we move into a bungalow. When they climb the walls and bloom, it will be a sight to behold.” Serenity, without missing a beat, replied with a smile, “The price of properties has skyrocketed to an all-time high. I can’t even scrape together the deposit for a studio apartment, let alone a bungalow.” Of course, Serenity had daydreamed about having a bungalow, but reality was far different. Anyone would want to live in a bungalow if they could afford it; it promised privacy, unlike the thin walls of an apartment that made it difficult to escape the noise from neighbors.
Zachary remained silent, his thoughts drifting back to the fact that their current living situation was a last-minute decision before their marriage. He had been used to a grand mansion, not this apartment. Serenity, noticing the shift in his demeanor, suggested, “Mr. York, get some breakfast. I’ll join you after I’m done watering the flowers.” Zachary nodded in agreement and made his way to the dining hall. Serenity’s breakfasts may have been simple, but her ability to make even the most basic dishes feel special was something Zachary had come to appreciate. Despite all the gourmet experiences he had been exposed to, he found serenity’s homemade toast and jam to be satisfying in a way he hadn’t expected.
Later that morning, Zachary was the first to leave the apartment. Upon arriving at the office building, he ran into Josh, who immediately noticed something was off. “Why do you look hot and bothered?” Josh asked, nudging him with a mischievous grin. “What? Can’t please your lady?” Zachary shot Josh a glare, not in the mood for his teasing. “We’re good!” he snapped, his tone defensive. But Josh wasn’t deterred. “Why do you look like you didn’t get enough last night then?” he asked, his grin widening.
Zachary furrowed his brow. “And how can you tell?” he asked, genuinely puzzled. The truth was, he had never experienced a particularly passionate night with Serenity. She didn’t make his heart race, and he had never felt those animalistic urges when they were together. It made Zachary realize how detached he had become emotionally. “I saw it with my own eyes,” Josh teased. “Anyway, Zachary, I ordered breakfast. Have you eaten? Come join me.”
Zachary couldn’t resist rolling his eyes but also couldn’t help but answer, “I have a wife. I get out of bed to have breakfast ready on the table. Only those who are single would order breakfast in the office.” Josh was momentarily stumped, realizing how much Zachary’s marriage had changed his usual routine. Curious about Zachary’s relationship with Serenity, Josh asked, “How’s the progress with your investigation? Send the file to my office later.”
Zachary nodded, “You know you can count on me,” Josh replied, his grin widening. As the two split ways, Zachary took his personal elevator to the top floor of the building, where his office awaited him. Josh, on the other hand, didn’t need to join him in the private elevator ride. He was content with his position as the popular, approachable one in the office. Unlike Zachary, Josh wasn’t viewed as a walking wax sculpture but as someone his colleagues could easily approach.
Zachary had just stepped into his office when Josh arrived with the breakfast delivery.
