Chapter 30
“What’s the matter, Mr. York?” Serenity’s voice called out from the balcony.
Zachary, chewing on his wrap, walked over to the balcony and replied, “Your sister’s issue isn’t a big deal. The car that got scratched belongs to one of our important clients. It occurred to me last night, so I called Mr. Lewis. He mentioned that the repairs will cost around ten thousand dollars.”
Serenity, busy arranging the plants, didn’t seem entirely herself. Zachary noticed the subtle exhaustion in her movements, likely due to her troubled sleep the night before. He guessed that her sister’s situation had kept her up.
Serenity lifted her chin and observed him eating, realizing that Zachary was easy to please when it came to food. She asked, “How can you be sure it’s your company’s client’s car?”
Her sister hadn’t known the car owner’s name, only that he was big, intimidating, and had a scar on his face. Sonny had been terrified of him.
Zachary explained, “I met Mr. Lewis yesterday when he came to our office. I noticed a scratch on his car and asked him about it. He told me a woman with a baby knocked a stroller into it. When you mentioned it last night, I thought it could be a coincidence, so I called him. Is your sister called…?” Zachary’s voice trailed off, waiting for Serenity to confirm. “He said he’d send me the full repair cost details. It’s all set up.”
Serenity stood up, her surprise evident. “That’s quite a coincidence, Mr. York. Did Mr. Lewis really say the repairs would be about ten thousand dollars?”
Her sister would definitely be able to manage that amount.
Zachary nodded. “I asked him, and that’s what he said.”
Serenity let out a sigh of relief. “That’s great. Thank you, Mr. York.”
The sisters had been most worried about the repair costs, so learning it was only ten thousand dollars brought a sense of peace. The day suddenly felt brighter.
In that moment, Serenity realized that, while they were strangers before, Zachary had become someone she could rely on. He was a capable man, always there for her whenever she needed help. He had become her pillar of support.
“You’re welcome,” Zachary replied, his good mood evident from her relief.
Just then, Serenity’s phone rang. It was Liberty.
“Liberty, I was just about to call you,” Serenity said. “I told Zachary about the incident. It turns out the car owner is one of his clients. Zachary asked about the repairs, and it should cost around ten thousand dollars. Can you afford that?”
Serenity had hardly slept, and she knew that Liberty must have had an even more restless night. The repair cost wouldn’t have been a concern when Liberty was earning a high income, but now that she was a full-time housewife without a source of income, it was a big issue. Liberty’s husband had blamed her for the accident, leaving her to handle it on her own.
“I can manage if it’s around ten thousand dollars,” Liberty replied. “I saved half of the allowance you gave me without telling my husband. It should cover the repair costs.”
“Oh, I actually called to tell you something else,” Liberty continued. “The car owner sent me a text at two in the morning, giving me an account number to wire nine thousand dollars. I saw the message when I woke up. I wanted to let you know, so you wouldn’t worry.”
It seemed that Mr. Lewis wasn’t expecting Liberty to pay the full repair cost. He had likely reduced the amount because of her new brother-in-law, Zachary. So far, Zachary had earned some goodwill with Liberty.
