Chapter 39
Chapter 39
Taking the pen, Serenity stood up from the swing and walked over to the balcony railing, where she signed her name on the contract against the hard concrete surface. Zachary then pulled out an ink pad for her to seal the agreement with her thumbprint. The couple kept one copy of the contract each. Serenity folded the contract nonchalantly and stuffed it in her pocket. Zachary, feeling irked by her lack of curiosity, couldn’t help but think about it. After all, he was the one who wrote the contract. Despite the terms working to her disadvantage, Serenity did not attempt to add a clause or ask for more.
“You had a tiring day. Get some rest,” Zachary said.
“You too,” Serenity replied with a smile. “I’m going to sit here for a bit and enjoy the flowers. It’s always been my dream to have a balcony filled with plants. Now that my dream has come true, I just can’t get enough of the view.”
She seemed completely unfazed by the contract. Did she marry him without any hidden agenda? Was he simply being paranoid? How else could he explain her calm, unaffected, and even happy demeanor? Zachary stared at her for a while, before quietly leaving her to her peace. He grabbed his car keys and went out the door. Serenity’s mellow voice drifted from the balcony.
“Are you going out, Mr. York?”
“Yeah. Don’t stay up and wait for me. Just leave the door unlocked for me.”
Serenity grinned. “I’ve never stayed up and waited for you.”
Zachary was left speechless, feeling as if her reply was a slap in his face. Flustered, he made a quick exit.
He drove to the Lewis’ residence to have a drink with Duncan. Serenity had really gotten him in a foul mood. Serenity should have been the one to feel humiliated or upset, yet she didn’t care. On the other hand, Zachary was the one who was losing his composure, probably because he felt brushed off for the first time.
That’s right. Serenity’s offhanded response toward the contract was a reflection of her attitude toward him. He was a dreamboat, yet Serenity had no intention of falling in love with him. He had an amazing body, but the thought of pursuing him or getting into his pants never crossed Serenity’s mind. Huh? What was he whining about?
Zachary should have been happy that she knew her place. At least she wasn’t shamelessly throwing herself at him. Despite trying to convince himself, Zachary ended up drinking a bit too much at Duncan’s place. Duncan, who didn’t help by bringing out all the good liquor, collapsed unconscious while Zachary was still standing.
Zachary, despite being three sheets to the wind, was still able to walk. His bodyguards arrived to pick him up. While on the road, one bodyguard asked, “Where to, Sir?”
“To Brynfield,” Zachary slurred.
He figured he shouldn’t stay out too late since the couple had just met their parents today. It was the least he could do to show some respect to his wife. The bodyguards dropped him off at Brynfield. Although Zachary was still able to walk, the bodyguard felt uneasy about leaving him alone and helped him up the stairs.
“Sir, should I wake the missus up?”
The bodyguard asked out of courtesy, as the missus should be in bed at this hour. Zachary fumbled for his house keys and muttered, “No need.”
