It was an inconceivable mental image. “Be alert and don’t expose our identities to Serenity. Son, say that you don’t have pensions. You grow vegetables and flowers for a living. Get your stories straight. Zack will go after you if you blow your cover. Don’t come crying to me then.” Nana, seeing the fun in her grandson’s plans, was committed to helping Zack stay in character. She had no doubt that Serenity was a good person, not driven by greed. At her age, Nana was a good judge of character.
“Got it,” everyone responded. They had met Serenity before when she saved Nana’s life, and as Nana’s sons and daughters-in-law, they were all grateful. Zachary’s mom, though, kept mostly to herself. She wasn’t pleased with Grandma May’s push for her son to marry, but Nana’s influence had swayed her son, who eventually signed the papers to marry Serenity. Despite her initial reservations, Zachary’s mom was thankful Serenity saved Nana’s life. The family had all expressed their gratitude, but Serenity humbly declined their attempts to repay her.
Nana, however, believed that Serenity was virtuous and was confident in her decision to push for the couple’s relationship. Zachary had only signed the papers to observe Serenity for a while, hoping to confirm Nana’s perception of her. Zachary’s mom, on the other hand, hoped the couple would eventually split, believing they weren’t well-matched in every way. However, she kept her thoughts to herself for Nana’s sake.
As the young couple drew closer, Serenity greeted Nana with a bright smile, before turning to greet the others. Although she had met them briefly before, today she was able to properly introduce herself. The few young and handsome men, whom Serenity assumed were Zachary’s brothers and cousins, were also present.
“Nana,” Serenity called, before smiling and greeting the others.
“Nana, you should call Tania and Liam, Mom and Dad,” Nana gleefully suggested.
Tania Reading, Zachary’s mother, gave Serenity a warm smile, although it was clear she had a hard time fully accepting her as her daughter-in-law. Liam, Zachary’s father, on the other hand, gave his daughter-in-law a kind look, trusting his mother’s judgment about Serenity. He was an open-minded parent who never interfered with his sons’ personal lives.
Serenity followed Nana’s suggestion and addressed them as “Mom” and “Dad,” though Tania only responded with a composed smile, masking any emotions she may have had.
“Let’s get upstairs. It’s hot out here,” Zachary’s deep voice interrupted.
Nana called for the rest of the family to help Serenity with the wagon of food, despite being perfectly capable herself. Soon, they arrived at the couple’s modest home. Serenity welcomed the family inside and urged them to take a seat as she served them drinks and fruits.
“Come, Serenity. Zack will introduce you around,” Nana said, taking in the cozy, well-decorated home.
Pulling Serenity away from fetching snacks, Nana shot Zachary an angry look, signaling him to introduce her to the younger generation of the family. Zachary, in his usual reserved manner, replied softly, “You can introduce yourselves to my wife.”
One by one, starting from the oldest and working down to the youngest, the boys greeted Serenity politely, making her feel welcomed by the family.
