Chapter 26
A convoy of luxury sedans cruised along the road, one of them being a Rolls Royce. It was Zachary’s personal vehicle. When the convoy came to a stop, Zachary rolled down his window and glanced over at the scar-faced man. “What are you doing here, Duncan?” he asked.
“I went to grab something, but when I came back, I found a scratch on my car,” Duncan replied.
Zachary raised an eyebrow and asked, “Did you catch the person who did it?”
Out of impulse, Zachary added, “Do you need help catching the one who vandalized your car?”
“It’s fine. I got her number. I’ll deal with it after I get my car fixed. Wiltspoon is my city—she can run, but she can’t hide.” Duncan started the engine, his voice dismissive. “I’m off.”
Without further exchange, Zachary rolled his windows back up and drove off with the convoy.
As time passed, the evening came quickly.
Once the after-school rush had died down, Serenity intended to make dinner for herself and Jasmine. Just as she was about to start in the kitchen, her phone rang—it was Liberty.
“Seren, I’ve been thinking about it all day. I’m coming to you because I’m out of options,” Liberty’s voice trembled on the other end.
“What happened, Liberty?” Serenity asked, concerned.
“I was pushing the stroller and accidentally scratched a Maybach when I was out shopping this afternoon. The repairs are probably going to be expensive. I don’t think my savings will cover it. I told Hank, but he yelled at me to fix it myself.” Liberty’s voice cracked with distress.
Serenity’s heart sank. “Take a deep breath, Liberty. How much do you think the repairs will cost?”
“I’m not sure yet. The car owner took my number and said he’ll call when it’s fixed,” Liberty explained, sounding defeated.
“All that matters is you and Sonny are okay. We can pay for the repairs. I’ll lend you the money, don’t worry about it,” Serenity reassured her.
Liberty choked back sobs. “Seren, I feel like such a loser. I can’t believe I messed up.”
“It was just an accident, Liberty. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Money is just material. The important thing is that no one got hurt,” Serenity said, trying to calm her.
Once Liberty had settled down, Serenity turned to Jasmine. “I need to go home now.”
“Okay,” Jasmine nodded in understanding, urging her to hurry.
Serenity rushed to her sister’s place, staying with her through the evening. She didn’t return home until midnight.
As she opened the door, Zachary’s voice rang out with a hint of deadpan curiosity, “Why are you back so late?”
Closing the door behind her, Serenity replied, “My sister ran into some trouble.”
Zachary’s expression softened slightly, his curiosity piqued. “What happened to your sister?”
“She went shopping this afternoon and accidentally scratched a luxury car while pushing the stroller. The repairs are going to be expensive. My sister doesn’t have a job, so she’s worried she won’t be able to afford it.”
A flicker of something crossed Zachary’s dark eyes. Was it possible that Serenity’s sister had damaged Duncan’s car?
“What kind of car was it? What’s the damage?” Zachary asked, his face remaining impassive as he probed.
“My sister said it was a Maybach. I’m not sure how much it will cost to repair a scratch on one of those,” Serenity replied, uncertain of the full extent of the damage.
