Chapter 53
Elisa was eventually picked up by her sister-in-law, Alice, while her smashed car was towed away. When Alice arrived, Elisa, with a mischievous grin, said, “Since Zachary wrecked my car, I now have an excuse to cling to him. Alice, now that I’ve made the first move, I need to keep going. I won’t forgive myself if I don’t put in the effort to pursue Zachary.” Elisa, full of determination, added, “Alice, you’re the best. Clive only listens to you. Please talk to him for me. I just need him off my back from my pursuit of happiness.” Elisa had always admired her brother and sister-in-law’s love story. Alice had pursued Clive, and after a year of persistence, she finally won his heart. After marriage, the roles reversed, and Clive pampered Alice endlessly. It wasn’t the first time Alice had mentioned that if she hadn’t been brave enough to go after the love of her life, she wouldn’t have had her happy ending.
While driving, Alice sighed, “Elisa, I’m all for you pursuing your happiness, but it’s Zachary we’re talking about. Aren’t you aware of his reputation in Wiltspoon? He’s known for keeping a distance from women. Have you ever seen any young women around him?” She paused, letting her words sink in. “Besides, our family isn’t on good terms with the Yorks. Your brother might not be enemies with Zachary, but they are rivals. They don’t see eye to eye. I’m worried Zachary might use you as a weapon or a punching bag.” Elisa, however, shook her head with determination. “I don’t think he’ll do that. The Yorks hold themselves in high regard. The men of the family are famous for spoiling their wives.” Having seen the love between her brother and Alice, Elisa held onto the hope that Zachary could be the same kind of man. The Yorks’ men were renowned for putting their wives above everything else, and Elisa dreamed of having the same intimacy with her future husband.
Alice, though concerned, responded, “No matter what, your brother is only doing it for your own good. Let’s save this conversation for another day, Elisa. Mom’s waiting for us at the Hermès store. Let’s get some fresh air with Mom. She’s been feeling down because of that issue with her sister.” Elisa pursed her lips, replying, “Mom and her sister have been apart for so many years. God knows how many times her sister has been through the adoption system. Her sister might have lost the photograph too. We’re looking for a needle in a haystack here.” Alice, however, remained hopeful. “Still, we have to try.” Elisa said nothing, her silence speaking volumes. Audrey’s wish was her only focus, and as her children, they had to help her fulfill it.
Meanwhile, Serenity was completely unaware of her rival in love. It had been a busy day at her shop, and after closing late at night, she rode her e-bike home. Wiltspoon was a thriving city, and even at eleven o’clock, the streets were filled with people, with food trucks lining the streets as people lined up for midnight snacks. Serenity passed by the food trucks, ignoring the catcalls from a group of young men. She wasn’t interested in entertaining their attention. When she reached the traffic lights, she hit the brakes and waited for the green light.
Once the light turned green, Serenity restarted her engine and zipped through the intersection. However, just as she was about to cross, her bike suddenly conked out. At first, she thought her battery had died, but when she checked, the battery was still full. Confused, she attempted to restart the bike several times, but it wouldn’t budge. “What could be the problem?” she muttered to herself.
Just then, a car pulled up beside her, and the window rolled down. It was Jasmine’s cousin, Shawn. “Is that you, Serenity? I thought your back looked familiar. For a moment there, I thought my eyes were deceiving me,” he said with a surprised tone. Serenity turned to him and replied, “Shawn, I don’t know what’s wrong with my bike. It suddenly stopped working, but the battery is full.” Shawn responded quickly, “Hang on, Serenity. I’ll park the car by the side of the road to get out of the way.” He drove his car to the curb and parked it before getting out to check on Serenity’s bike. “I’m sorry, but I don’t know much about e-bikes to know…” he trailed off, inspecting the bike carefully.
