Chapter 59
It was a quiet, peaceful night, and by the morning, Serenity was already up, tending to the plants on the balcony. There was something about nature that brought a sense of calm, and she couldn’t deny how much the little garden Zachary had helped her create improved her mood. It cleared her mind and gave her a fresh perspective, especially after the tension from last night.
Once she’d taken a moment to enjoy the garden, Serenity moved into the kitchen to make breakfast. It wasn’t long before Zachary, still groggy, stumbled out of his room. He stood at the kitchen doorway, watching Serenity with a quiet gaze.
“Morning, Serenity,” he greeted, his voice still heavy with sleep.
Serenity glanced over her shoulder, giving him a brief nod. “Morning.”
“Can I help you with anything?” Zachary asked, his tone soft, almost uncertain.
Serenity didn’t skip a beat. “I’m good. You can put the laundry out and sweep the place if you have nothing to do.”
Zachary was taken aback by how easily she ordered him around. Still, he didn’t argue. “Sure,” he said with a shrug before walking away.
He hung the laundry in the sun, then went on to clean, making sure every corner of the house was spotless. There wasn’t much to clean in the first place, considering only the two of them lived there and they were often away at work. But Zachary meticulously swept every nook, leaving no spot untouched.
By the time Serenity finished preparing breakfast, Zachary was still busy with his cleaning.
“What’s taking you so long?” she muttered, grabbing the broom from his hands to finish the job herself.
Zachary just blinked at her in surprise. He hadn’t expected her to take over so quickly.
Within minutes, Serenity had swept the last corner clean. Zachary stood there, ready to say something, but he held back. He had learned his lesson after last night. Serenity may have been upset then, but she wasn’t now. She’d even made breakfast for him.
Zachary finally realized that Serenity wasn’t someone to be easily intimidated or messed with. She had a clear line, and once crossed, she wouldn’t hesitate to stand up for herself. It was better to resolve any issues face-to-face rather than letting things fester. Serenity was an easygoing person when treated with respect.
She noticed his lingering gaze and teased, “You can look at me openly. No need to act like a peeping Tom. I know I’m pretty. I could win a beauty contest.”
Zachary chuckled. “I thought you’d say you’ll bring home the crown.”
Serenity responded with a grin, “I should be humble. I shouldn’t say it out loud even though I have what it takes to be the champion.”
Zachary’s expression faltered. “…”
After washing her hands, Serenity motioned for Zachary to join her at the table for breakfast. She’d made egg muffins with sausages, a favorite of hers. The muffins were filled with red bell pepper, cherry tomatoes, and cheese—just the perfect combination.
“I’ll drive you to the shop later,” Zachary said as he picked up his fork.
Serenity shook her head without looking up. “I can get a cab.”
“It’s not far from here,” Zachary insisted. “It won’t take much of my time to drive you to the shop and then head to the office. I can be flexible with my hours.”
He did, after all, run York Corporation. His schedule was entirely up to him, and no one could stop him from coming and going as he pleased.
“Alright then,” Serenity relented. “We should leave after breakfast. Traffic is horrible during rush hour.”
Zachary nodded, a hint of satisfaction in his eyes. No matter what, she was still his wife. He had the means to drive her to work, and he wasn’t about to let someone else take that responsibility.
Just as they were about to finish breakfast, Serenity’s phone rang. It was a habit for her to leave it on the dining table while they ate. Since they were sitting side-by-side, Zachary, sitting tall, could easily see the caller ID.
The name on the screen made his lips tighten—“Pretty Boy Shawn.”
Pretty boy!
