Chapter 76
Chelsea’s youngest son was right behind Sonny, crying and demanding, “I want the plane Sonny got!” Sonny clutched the toy plane to his chest, nervously glancing back at his cousin. “Huggies, Mama. Huggies, Mama,” he murmured, seeking comfort from Liberty.
Liberty quickly picked up her son, soothing him. Chelsea, however, wasn’t satisfied. “Liberty, tell Sonny to give the plane to my son. We’re your guests. Sonny should be nice to my son,” she insisted, wiping away her son’s tears before attempting to snatch the toy from Sonny.
Just as Chelsea reached for the toy, her gaze fell on Serenity and Zachary, who had entered the room. Zachary was juggling several shopping bags, and Chelsea immediately paused, withdrawing her arms. She flashed Serenity a smile and greeted her. “Long time no see, Serenity. Is this your husband? Why, he’s a handsome and striking man, isn’t he?”
Chelsea was clearly envious of Serenity. Not only was Zachary attractive, but he carried himself with an elegance and confidence that even Hank, despite his managerial position, couldn’t match.
“Long time no see, Chelsea. This is my husband, Zachary,” Serenity responded.
Chelsea exchanged pleasantries with Zachary, but he remained aloof, giving her only a brief nod in greeting. Zachary quickly grew annoyed with Chelsea after witnessing her attempt to take Sonny’s toy for her son. Sonny was younger than his cousin, and the toy rightfully belonged to him. Why should Sonny be expected to give in to his cousin’s demands? As someone who valued fairness, Zachary wasn’t about to let this injustice slide. He cared for Sonny and couldn’t stand seeing him in that position.
Liberty led Serenity and Zachary inside as Chelsea continued to fuss over her son, still crying about the toy. Hank’s parents greeted Serenity and Zachary warmly, their previous coldness toward Serenity forgotten now that she was married and had moved out. They had heard about Zachary’s successful career and his debt-free home at Brynfield, which made them eager to be on Serenity’s good side.
Everyone settled down, and Zachary placed the shopping bags on the coffee table. Chelsea, noticing a new toy set among the items, eagerly opened one of the bags and pulled out the toy, offering it to her son. “Don’t cry, bubs. Let’s play with the new toy. We don’t like Sonny’s old toy, do we?” she cooed.
Zachary clenched his jaw, visibly irritated by Chelsea’s actions. Mr. Brown nudged his wife, signaling her to intervene before things escalated further. Chelsea’s behavior was making her look foolish, especially since Zachary had brought the toys for Sonny.
George Repton, Chelsea’s husband, quickly got up, grabbed the toy from his son, and placed it back on the coffee table. He carried his son over to the couch and said, “Be a good boy now, bubs. I’ll get you a new toy later.”
Chelsea, oblivious to the tension, didn’t pick up on the awkwardness in the room. Zachary, however, couldn’t hold back. “Let him play with the toy. I bought a lot of new toys for Sonny. He won’t be missing that,” he said, his tone sharp. He had noticed that Chelsea’s son had dirty hands, and he regarded the toy as soiled. He didn’t care if the boy played with it now.
With a small gesture from Zachary, Serenity quietly picked up the new toy set and handed it to Chelsea’s son. She understood why Zachary had been so quick to offer the toy—he didn’t want to risk the dirty hands contaminating the one meant for Sonny.
