Chapter 65
but because it’s my responsibility as her husband.” Zachary leaned back in his chair, his expression serious. Josh raised an eyebrow, sensing a deeper layer to Zachary’s words, but didn’t press the issue further. He knew his friend well enough to understand that Zachary’s decisions often came with a strong sense of duty, even if emotions weren’t fully involved yet.
Josh nodded. “Got it. I’ll look into it for you. But just so you know, people can be complicated. Sometimes, the more you dig, the more you find out things you wish you hadn’t.”
Zachary’s gaze didn’t falter. “I’m prepared for whatever comes up. I just want to make sure I’m doing right by her.”
Josh gave a short laugh, leaning back in his chair. “Alright, I’ll get on it. You’ll have the information soon enough.” He stood up to leave but paused for a moment. “You know, I’ve seen a lot of couples. Some of them fall in love the moment they get married, while others take a lot longer. But you and Serenity, it’s different. You’ve got something… maybe you’re not ready to call it love yet, but it’s there.”
Zachary didn’t respond immediately. He was used to Josh’s teasing but wasn’t in the mood for it today. He simply nodded, his mind drifting to thoughts of Serenity and the complexity of their relationship.
“Just do what you have to do, Josh,” he said, dismissing the conversation.
“Will do,” Josh replied with a smile before walking out of the office, leaving Zachary alone with his thoughts.
As Josh made his way back to his desk, he couldn’t help but feel intrigued by the subtle hints Zachary had given him. He had always known that his friend was methodical, but there was something about this marriage that was different. Zachary was committed, not because he had to be, but because he genuinely wanted to understand his wife better, to protect her. Josh made a mental note to investigate her background thoroughly, but he also knew that some things might not be as simple as they appeared.
Meanwhile, back at the school, Serenity was busy with her own work, unaware of what was brewing in the background. She had her own set of challenges to face with her family, and Zachary was just starting to realize how complicated things might get. His willingness to protect her, however, would set the stage for the next chapter of their journey together.
