Chapter 5
With a serious expression, Zachary said, “Back to the meeting.”
Sitting closest to Zachary was his cousin, Callum, who ranked second among the cousins of Zachary’s age.
Callum leaned in and whispered, “Zack, I overheard your conversation with Nana. Did you really marry that… girl?”
Zachary shot him a sharp glare.
Callum quickly straightened up and stopped prying, though he couldn’t help but feel sympathy for Zachary.
There was no need for the York family to secure social and financial standing through marriage, yet Zachary and his new bride seemed like an odd match in every way. Poor Zack, Callum thought. He’d only married her because Nana liked her.
Callum silently sent his condolences to Zachary. Thank goodness he wasn’t the oldest in the family, or he would have had to step up and marry Nana’s chosen one himself.
Meanwhile, Serenity had received the location details and was hauling her suitcase toward her new home.
When she opened the door, she was greeted by a spacious house. It was much larger and more furnished than her sister’s.
After putting down her suitcase, Serenity began exploring her new space. This was her home now.
The house had two living areas, four bedrooms, one kitchen, two bathrooms, and two balconies. Every room was expansive, and Serenity estimated the total space to be around two thousand square feet.
The house was barely furnished—there was just a sofa set with a coffee table and a wine chiller in the living room. Two of the four bedrooms had beds and wardrobes, while the other two were empty.
The master bedroom, which seemed to belong to Zachary, had en-suite facilities, including a walk-in closet, study, and bathroom. Despite the division of space, the room was enormous, just like the living area.
Serenity chose one of the other bedrooms that also had a bed. It was sunny, thanks to the balcony, and located just below the master bedroom, giving them both their personal space.
Although they were legally married, Serenity didn’t plan on acting like a married couple unless Zachary initiated it.
After bringing her suitcase into the bedroom, Serenity went to check out the kitchen.
It was spotless but lacked kitchenware. Both balconies were also bare but offered a sense of space. Serenity decided to add some plants and a swing to the balcony; she imagined herself reading a book and enjoying the view while swinging during her free time.
It seemed Zachary rarely ate dinner at home. Since she was now living here, Serenity planned to cook meals. She ordered kitchen utensils online and decided to consult Zachary about the balcony and other furniture when he returned from work. After all, it was his house, and she was just staying here for now.
Once she ordered the kitchen supplies, Serenity checked the time and realized she needed to get back to the shop. Grabbing her keys and phone, she hurried downstairs.
She made it back just in time for the afterschool rush.
Her best friend, Jasmine, noticed Serenity’s distracted demeanor and asked, “What did you do this morning, Seren?”
“My sister and brother-in-law have been arguing a lot because of me,” Serenity explained with a shrug. “I thought it over and decided to move out.”
Jasmine sighed. “Men always say they’ll take care of us, but when it comes down to it, they’re the ones nagging and finding faults. After marriage, we women are expected to put family first and grin through misunderstandings. It’s so unfair. Your sister should find a job! Women need financial independence so they can have a say in the household.”
As she spoke, Jasmine suddenly frowned and gave Serenity a puzzled look. “Wait, I can’t believe your sister let you move out.”
“I got married.”
Jasmine’s eyes widened. “Oh… What? You got…”
