Chapter 89
Back at the bookshop near Wiltspoon School, Serenity sat behind the cash register, casually scrolling through her phone to catch up on the news while Jasmine was immersed in a romance novel. As the owner of the bookshop, Jasmine had the luxury of exploring every book she wanted, which was the perk of doing what she loved for a living. Having read nearly every romance novel in the shop, Jasmine was often teased by Serenity to consider becoming a writer, especially since she was such a fan of chick lit.
“Seren, the main characters in this story got married at first sight too,” Jasmine said with a smile, as she put down the book. “Just like you.” Serenity glanced over at her and responded with a raised eyebrow.
“Lots of people get married after dating for a short time. Well, you did say the female character in that book blindly married a billionaire. My husband is just a wage earner,” Serenity quipped, although she had to admit Zachary, being a senior white-collar worker in a major group, wasn’t exactly poor. Still, he worked for someone else.
“You might want to cut down on reading,” Serenity teased. “I think the stories are getting a little over your head. You’ll never find Mr. Right because you’ll compare real-life men to the fictional male leads. The irresistible CEOs only exist in books.” Jasmine laughed but didn’t seem too bothered by Serenity’s comments.
“I’m just passing the time with these books,” she replied with a shrug. “I don’t have a knack for crafting like you.” Jasmine put her book down and pulled out her phone to scroll through the latest updates. She had a preference for tabloid news and always checked the trending updates on her favorite site.
One particular article caught Jasmine’s attention, and she exclaimed, “Seren, check out Twitter.”
“What’s the big news?” Serenity glanced at her but didn’t show much interest. Although she had a Twitter account, she didn’t pay much attention to it, given that her followers were mostly loyal customers who were interested in her crafts.
“Someone declared their love for the heir of the Yorks.” Jasmine said, her voice filled with excitement.
“Oh,” Serenity replied nonchalantly, not feeling the slightest bit intrigued. To her, the York family heir was a figure she would never encounter in her life. Why waste time on someone who didn’t play a part in her world?
“I heard the heir’s not short of admirers. I mean, he’s the heir and CEO of York Corporation. Marrying him is basically marrying into wealth and power,” Jasmine continued. “The woman must be someone important to make such a bold move to profess her feelings. Do you want to guess who she is, Seren?”
Serenity responded dryly, “It’s neither you nor me for sure.”
Jasmine was momentarily silenced, but then she whined, “Why aren’t you intrigued by the hottest gossip of the year?”
“It’s the sister of Stone Group’s CEO,” she continued. “Elisa Stone. Stone Group is second only to York Corporation in Wiltspoon. But the two families don’t get along. I can’t believe Elisa has a thing for Mr. York! I admire her bravery and confidence for going after him!”
Serenity, however, wasn’t so optimistic. “We were talking about Mr. York swinging the other way last time. Ms. Stone won’t have her feelings reciprocated. It’d probably be a more optimistic outcome if Mr. Stone went after him instead.”
Jasmine was taken aback and struggled to come up with a response. “Mr. Stone is married, and his wedding was a huge sensation in Wiltspoon. They’re very much in love. Everyone knows that.” She paused, thinking about how Mr. Stone was the epitome of a perfect romance novel hero—young, handsome, and rich.
Serenity smirked, “Exactly. Mr. Stone is like one of those real-life characters out of the books you read.”
