Chapter 13
Zachary was the center of attention as he entered the room, completely unaware of his new bride sitting in a corner. Serenity tried to spot him through the crowd but couldn’t get a good look at his face. After a while, she gave up, deciding to sit back down. She nudged her best friend, saying, “I won’t bother. It’s too crowded to get a good look. Let’s eat.” Serenity was here for one reason: to indulge in food.
“Wait here, Seren. I’ll find out who’s here. It’s like the king’s arrival with all this fuss,” Jasmine said, her curiosity piqued.
“Sure,” Serenity replied casually.
Jasmine wandered off to inquire, leaving Serenity to enjoy her meal. Having already finished her plates, Serenity got up to clear them. While everyone else was focused on the VIP, Serenity could move around freely, grabbing food without the scrutiny of others.
Zachary made his way into the room, first engaging in light conversation with the event organizer. His bodyguards, always on alert, kept an eye on everyone around them. Zachary was known for being particularly wary of women getting too close to him, so the bodyguards were extra vigilant for anyone with hidden motives.
One of the bodyguards, tall and observant, noticed Serenity in the corner while scanning the venue. At first, he doubted his eyes but quickly recognized her as Mrs. Zachary. Though Zachary had kept his identity hidden when marrying Serenity, his bodyguards, except for the elderly Mrs. Zachary, were familiar with her. The bodyguard, still surprised, watched as Serenity effortlessly filled two plates with food before walking away to sit in the corner.
Serenity continued to enjoy her meal without a care in the world, completely unaware of the attention she was attracting.
The bodyguard, still processing the sight, hesitated before approaching Zachary after he finished his conversation with some CEOs. “Mr. Zachary,” the bodyguard whispered, “I saw your missus.”
Zachary frowned at the news but quickly masked his irritation. “Why is she here?”
“No clue,” the bodyguard replied.
“Keep an eye on her. Don’t let her see me. And take some pictures of who she’s with and what she’s doing,” Zachary ordered coldly. He was still suspicious of Serenity’s intentions. He suspected she might be using this opportunity to climb the social ladder, which was why he had kept his identity hidden. He worried she might be turned off by his more modest background.
The bodyguard nodded respectfully and took note of the instructions. Zachary then returned to his conversation with the CEOs, where business deals were typically finalized.
Meanwhile, Serenity remained blissfully unaware that she was being watched by her husband’s bodyguard.
When Jasmine returned, Serenity asked eagerly, “Did you find out anything?”
“Yeah, the heir of the York family is here. He’s the head of York Corporation, but I couldn’t get a glimpse of him. He’s surrounded by bodyguards. My aunt mentioned that the heir doesn’t like women getting too close, so his security detail keeps all the single ladies at a distance.”
“Oh,” Serenity responded indifferently.
“Seren, your man is also a York. Don’t you think there’s a connection? The Yorks are the richest family, and not many people share that last name,” Jasmine remarked, nudging her friend.
Serenity, unfazed, simply smiled.
