Chapter 6
Serenity smiled and said, “What do I need your cousin for? He has a girlfriend. It’s too late now because the papers are signed! Keep it between us and don’t let my sister know. I don’t want her to be sad.”
Jasmine was at a loss for words. Serenity sure knew how to pull off a move.
“There are all those Lifetime movies and romance novels about marrying a multi-billionaire. Maybe that’s what’s happening to you too, Seren.”
Serenity smacked her best friend on the head and grinned. “I bet you read all the chick lit in the shop. Dream on about marrying a billionaire at first sight. Do you think the place is crawling with billionaires?”
Jasmine rubbed her head and sighed, realizing Serenity had a point. She then asked, “Where’s your husband’s place?”
“Brynfield.”
“Not bad. It’s a good neighborhood and easy to get to. Plus, it’s not far from our shop. Where does your husband work? He must earn a lot, since he bought a house in Wiltspoon and in a gated community like Brynfield. What’s his salary like? Do you need help with the mortgage?”
“Seren, get your name on the title deed if he wants you to help with the mortgage. It’s to protect yourself. Not to jinx it, but you won’t get anything if you guys fall out and divorce since it’s a prenuptial property.”
Serenity studied her best friend’s face before replying, “You sound like my sister. He bought and paid for the house in full, so there’s no mortgage. I don’t think it’s nice to put my name on the title deed when I didn’t spend a penny on it.”
Jasmine replied, “It won’t matter if the husband and wife get along.”
The thought struck Serenity that her brother-in-law had bought the family house before marriage. He was paying off the monthly house loan, but the renovation costs came from Liberty’s savings. Yet, Liberty’s name wasn’t on the property deed. With this in mind, Serenity started to worry about her sister.
She thought she should bring it up with Liberty one of these days.
At eleven o’clock at night, Serenity closed the shop. Since Jasmine’s home was nearby and a family member was treating her to dinner, Serenity told Jasmine to head home.
After locking up, Serenity grabbed her keys and walked to her e-bike. She rode for twenty minutes until she arrived at her sister’s place. It only dawned on her when she parked the bike that she no longer lived there.
She looked up at the floor where her sister lived and noticed the lights were out. Although she felt a pang of sadness, Serenity left the family of three to their quiet evening and rode her e-bike into the night.
By midnight, she reached Brynfield.
The house greeted her with darkness as she pushed the door open. It didn’t feel like anyone lived there.
She grabbed her pajamas from the suitcase, took a hot shower, and let the weariness of the day rock her into sleep.
Meanwhile, at the Wiltspoon Hotel, Zachary was flanked by bodyguards as he walked out of his family-owned hotel. He had just closed a major deal with a key client and arranged for them to stay in the presidential suite. With his new wife on his mind, Zachary decided to head home.
“Sir, will it be the estate or the hilltop villa?”
The estate was the Yorks’ family home, while the hilltop villa was Zachary’s personal property. His permanent residence was the villa, though he would sometimes visit the estate to have dinner with the family elders.
“To Brynfield,” he said.
