Chapter 33
The shopping trip took two hours. Zachary, used to the convenience of five-star transportation, found himself exhausted from the experience, even though he kept up with a fitness routine and self-defense classes. He would rather drown in work and meetings than go shopping with a woman. When the car stopped, Serenity received a call from Grandma May just as she was about to step out.
“Are you home, Serenity? We’re downstairs,” Nana asked.
Serenity smiled and responded, “We just returned from the market, Nana. Wait for us, we’ll be right there.”
“Did you go to the market with Zack?” Nana asked, her voice warm.
That made Nana smile to herself, thinking, ‘To think my callous and stuck-up grandson actually went shopping with Serenity at the market. If he wanted to play the pauper, he might as well step into an ordinary person’s shoes.’
“Yeah. We went to get groceries.”
“Nana, Zack’s always busy with work, so he’s never been to the market. It’s a good thing to bring him around. Serenity, make Zack do the heavy lifting. He’s strong. Don’t tire yourself.”
Zachary felt a little doubtful, wondering if Serenity was actually Grandma May’s biological grandchild instead. As Serenity got out of the car, she held the phone with one hand and used the other to open the rear door, pulling out a foldable wagon and gesturing for Zachary to unfold it.
“Don’t worry, Nana. I won’t exert myself.”
Since the wagon was too small to carry all the groceries, Zachary had to carry the rest. Serenity made sure to follow Nana’s advice and had it easy as they walked home.
“Nana, we’re coming right now.”
“Sure. See you later.”
After the call ended, Serenity slipped her phone into her pocket and continued pulling the wagon while chatting with Zachary, who was loaded with bags.
“Come on, Mr. York. Nana and your family are waiting downstairs.”
Zachary, walking beside her, called her attention to something important. “Don’t call me Mr. York in front of Nana and the others. Call me Zachary.”
“Sure thing.”
Serenity wasn’t going to fuss over the form of address. Soon, they reached the building, and as they walked up, Zachary and Serenity caught the attention of Nana and the rest of the family. Serenity was pulling a wagon filled with fruits, vegetables, meat, and beverages, while Zachary carried bags upon bags of groceries. It was a striking image as the couple walked side by side.
“Hahaha—” Rowan, the youngest of Zachary’s generation and still in high school, burst into laughter. He had always been terrified of his stone-faced cousin, Zack, who was always cold and aloof, even with family.
Rowan never expected to see the day Zack would step down from his high pedestal.
“Rowan!” Nana called, but her eyes were filled with joy. She now believed that keeping Zachary’s identity a secret to observe Serenity’s character was a good idea. It allowed them to see another side of Zachary.
“I can’t help it, Nana. Let me have my laugh for a little longer,” Rowan chuckled. “Serenity should get Zack to hold a spade in one hand and a hoe in the other while piggybacking a baby.”
Everyone was speechless.
