Chapter_284
The kids in the compound room finally understood the meaning of “birds of a feather flock together” as they watched Jeremiah and Yvette flaunt their love so effortlessly, as if the world around them didn’t exist. The tension in the room was palpable. They didn’t know whether to look away or sneak peeks at the couple. If it weren’t for Keira still passed out on the floor, the two of them would have been the perfect image of a couple in love.
Yvette reached for Jeremiah’s hand and gave it a little rub, her expression one of mild disinterest. She pursed her lips and glanced at his hand. There was a callus at the base of his thumb. It was strangely… pretty.
She gave a slight smile, then glanced around the room, her innocence almost too perfect. Everyone she looked at felt their hearts start to beat faster.
“Do any of you have any wishes?” Yvette asked casually, her gaze shifting first to Samantha. “Feel free to share. I’ve got some free time today.”
Samantha forced a smile, trying to hide the unease rising in her chest. She extended a hand as if to reassure Yvette, though it was clear she was still on edge. “I don’t have any wishes. I’m beautiful, wealthy, my parents are alive, and my family is happy. I don’t need anything.” She said this with complete sincerity, but there was a hint of fear in her voice, likely because she noticed Yvette’s possible intoxication.
Yvette let out a small sigh, clearly disappointed. She shifted her focus to Jared. “Hey, bro, do you have any wishes?”
Jared jolted, his mind still recovering from the earlier events. He wasn’t about to make any more birthday wishes today, especially not after what he had witnessed. His eyes were wide with panic as he quickly shook his head. “No, Ms. Zeller, I have no wishes,” he replied, his voice shaky, almost on the verge of tears.
Yvette regarded him curiously for a few moments, her brow furrowed. Why is he crying? No one hurt him… she thought, confused. She cracked her knuckles, then turned to face the group. Her tone was light and pleasant. “Anyone else? Any wishes?”
At her words, everyone instinctively took a step back. They waved their hands frantically. “No, no wishes from us.”
Yvette closed her eyes for a moment, and when she opened them again, there was a hint of drowsiness in her gaze. “Alright, if no one has any wishes, forget it,” she said softly, as if losing interest.
Jeremiah, noticing that Yvette was getting drowsy, leaned back and lazily drawled, his voice smooth and deep with a touch of his usual charisma, “I do have a wish. I’m ready to head home and sleep now.”
Yvette tilted her head at him, then grabbed his hand with a small smile. “Alright, let’s go home and sleep,” she agreed, as if the rest of the room didn’t exist.
Seeing the two of them make their move to leave, everyone in the room finally exhaled, releasing the tension they had been holding onto.
Yvette led Jeremiah toward the door but paused for a moment before turning around. The compound kids felt a sudden spike of anxiety. What’s she going to do now? they thought, stiffening.
Yvette flashed a warm, almost cheerful wave to everyone as she said, “I’m leaving. Bye, see you next time, guys.”
Everyone was thinking the same thing: Next time? No way. I don’t ever want to see these two again. After tonight, they’re officially on my blacklist for future parties. A top-level threat.
From that moment on, whenever Yvette’s name was mentioned in Betrico, everyone went silent.
After tonight, a new saying started to spread: Crossing Jeremiah might leave you an escape route, but upsetting Yvette? That’s the end of the line.
Jared let out a deep breath as he watched the two of them finally leave. He felt as though he had been holding his breath the entire time. “Wow. That was terrifying. Mr. Chavez’s girlfriend… she’s really something. Totally impressive,” he said, still trying to process everything.
As he spoke, the others in the room slowly began to snap back to reality, except for Keira, who was still lying on the floor, completely ignored.
Joel, shaking his head, added, “When Yvette looked our way earlier, I felt like I was skating on thin ice. I was sweating bullets.”
“Don’t even mention it,” another person chimed in. “It was so creepy. I felt the same way, and my back is drenched.”
“I know, right? It’s crazy! We should’ve known. There’s no way someone like Mr. Chavez would be with a nobody. Yvette is seriously impressive,” one of the guys said, still amazed.
“Yeah, if it weren’t for Ms. Zeller, we’d still be at the mercy of that model,” another person added, relieved.
Everyone suddenly remembered Keira and looked at her, still passed out on the floor like a ragdoll. A few of them smirked in disdain.
In an unusually charitable gesture, Joel called Keira’s agent to have her taken to the hospital.
Samantha didn’t have time for any further discussions with the group. For her, this trip had definitely been worth it. She had met Yvette, and something told her that because of Yvette, Betrico might not stay peaceful for much longer.
With a smile, Samantha grabbed her handbag and waved goodbye to the others before heading out. She sped back home in her luxury car, eager to process the day.
As soon as she entered the house, she saw her father, Tim, sitting on the sofa reading the newspaper. She slipped off her high heels and handed her bag to a maid. Slipping into her cozy slippers, she walked over to him casually. “Dad, why are you still awake so late? Isn’t the military district busy these days?” she asked.
Tim took off his glasses and rubbed his temples. He’d been sitting there for an hour. Noticing Samantha’s upbeat mood, he asked, “What’s going on, Samantha? Why are you so happy today? Weren’t you feeling down just the other day?”
Samantha poured herself a glass of orange juice and took a sip. She tilted her head slightly and smiled. “Oh, nothing much. I just happened to see Mr. Chavez and his girlfriend today. She’s pretty interesting,” she said, still intrigued by Yvette.
Tim, who had heard rumors about Samantha seeing someone, knew exactly who she was referring to. He also knew there was no connection between her and Jeremiah—just baseless gossip.
Hearing Samantha’s words, Tim set aside the newspaper and paused. “You saw Jeremiah with his girlfriend? Is that right?”
Samantha nodded, her tone mixed with admiration and a touch of regret. “Yeah, we had a gathering, and they happened to show up. I honestly don’t know how Jeremiah got so lucky to find someone like her.”
Tim was taken aback for a moment. Can Jeremiah’s girlfriend really be worthy of such praise from Samantha? he thought. He knew how high his daughter’s standards were. There weren’t many people in Betrico who would earn her admiration so quickly.
He recalled the dessert shop incident, where Yvette had helped her future mother-in-law in a spat. That was impressive.
Tim shook himself out of his thoughts. “What’s going on with you and that Zion guy? Still sulking? Listen, these artsy types love being dramatic. If it doesn’t work out, just dump him. I’ll find you someone better.”
At the mention of Zion’s name, Samantha’s eyes flickered. She looked up at Tim casually. “Do you really think anyone in our Mitchell family can’t tame a wild horse?” she replied coolly.
Tim was momentarily speechless, then smiled as he saw the determination in her eyes. “If the little toy gets fussy, let him. Don’t worry, I’ve got your back. If he doesn’t behave, there are plenty of ways to handle him. Just be assertive, and if things get tough, I’ll find someone more suitable.”
Samantha smirked. She knew Zion loved her deeply but was just pretending to be tough for the sake of his pride. She was curious to see how long he could keep up the act before he finally spoke up.
The next morning, at ten o’clock in the master bedroom of Skyland, Yvette slowly opened her eyes. She turned her head and glanced at the dent in the bed beside her. There was a faint mint scent lingering in the air, barely noticeable, but it was there.
