Chapter_256
The café hummed with chatter as Yvette and Lucy sat in their corner, the tension between them beginning to melt away after years of separation. Yvette, as always, was her cool, composed self, while Lucy couldn’t help but feel a little restless. She had worked hard for everything she had, but there was still something missing, something that left her questioning what she was really living for.
Their conversation about life took a sharp turn when Lucy, in a rare moment of vulnerability, asked, “Yvette, what do you people live for?”
Yvette, always a woman of few words, took a slow sip of her milkshake, letting the silence stretch out before responding. “Are you thinking about dying?” Her bluntness caught Lucy off guard, choking on her drink, but Yvette’s point was sharp and clear.
“Why would I think about ending it all?” Lucy managed to answer after the surprise wore off. “I’m just contemplating life.”
Yvette’s expression remained stoic, her eyes narrowing slightly as she replied, “If you don’t want to die, you just have to keep living.”
The simplicity of the answer settled over Lucy like a heavy blanket. For all her achievements, her wealth, and her success, she realized she was caught up in questions that didn’t matter. She didn’t need to complicate things. Just live. The words echoed in her mind as she sipped her coffee, feeling the weight of everything that had been stressing her out begin to lift.
But just as the moment of quiet reflection passed, a group of women entered the café, their voices cutting through the air like a knife. They were clearly from the upper echelon of Betrico’s society, carrying their LV and Hermes bags with practiced grace. As they settled in the booth next to Yvette and Lucy, their conversation became impossible to ignore.
“Did you hear that Jeremiah from the Chavez family is dating someone?” one woman’s voice rang out, sharp and full of gossip.
Lucy’s eyes flickered toward them briefly but didn’t react. She had already heard the rumors. Everyone in Betrico had. Jeremiah Chavez, the grandson of General Jase Chavez, was a well-known figure, and every move he made was closely watched by those around him.
“I heard about it too,” another woman added. “My son’s group chat has been buzzing with the news. It must be true.”
The chatter continued, each woman speculating about the mysterious girl who had caught the eye of Betrico’s most eligible bachelor. “Which young girl managed to snag this prince from the Chavez family?” one of them asked, clearly envious.
Lucy sighed, her mind already racing. She had already heard the rumors swirling about Jeremiah’s mysterious new relationship. Most of the high society in Betrico were either too proud or too jealous to accept the idea that someone outside their social circle might have caught his attention. As expected, they all assumed she must have used some sort of trickery to land him.
Lucy couldn’t help herself. She leaned over to Yvette, her voice laced with a bit of amusement as she shared the gossip. “The Jeremiah they’re talking about is none other than the grandson of General Jase Chavez, the youngest major general in Clusia. He’s quite the legend here. I’ve heard about him, but I don’t know much about him personally.”
Yvette didn’t seem particularly interested in the gossip, her expression remaining unchanged. As Lucy spoke, Yvette’s eyes grew a little sharper, though, and she tilted her head slightly when Lucy mentioned Jeremiah’s mysterious girlfriend. “Nothing but two eyes and a nose. Nothing remarkable to look at,” she said nonchalantly, clearly dismissing the idea of the girl as anything special.
Lucy blinked in surprise. She hadn’t expected such a reaction from Yvette. It was true that Yvette didn’t seem to have much interest in love or relationships. In fact, Lucy couldn’t remember a time when Yvette had shown any real desire for romance. Yvette’s life had always been one of independence and mystery, and Lucy had often wondered if anyone could ever truly get close to her.
“I guess that makes sense,” Lucy muttered, not pressing the issue further. She assumed Yvette just wasn’t interested.
But just as the conversation began to die down, another voice from the next booth reached their ears. “Did you invite Aurora over today?” one of the women asked.
This caught Lucy’s attention. Aurora. Jeremiah’s mother. The one person who could possibly make sense of the rumors swirling around her son. Lucy glanced over at Yvette, her curiosity piqued. Would Yvette react to the mention of Aurora’s name? Or would she remain her usual, enigmatic self? The evening was just getting started, and the undercurrent of tension was only growing stronger.
