Bonnie stared at Andrew, hiccupping through her sobs. Her face flushed red, and Andrew gently flicked her forehead. “Stop crying, or you’ll end up looking like a little kitten with streaks all over your face.” Bonnie nodded obediently, wiping her tears.
The two of them completely ignored Robert and Victor, who were standing nearby. Robert, still processing Andrew’s words, was taken aback. He gathered his courage and said to Andrew, “Hey, why are you making such a big deal out of this? It’s just a little argument between girls.”
Andrew turned, naturally positioning himself between Bonnie and Robert. His cold, sharp gaze landed on Robert, and he spoke with a chilling calmness. “You better tell Winona to stop causing trouble. Otherwise, I don’t care if she’s pregnant or not. I’m not a nice guy, and if anyone messes with my girl, they’ll regret it. Got it?”
Robert, already feeling the intimidating presence of Jeremiah, now found himself even more unnerved by Andrew’s words. He edged closer to Victor, his anxiety palpable. Victor, observing the scene with a sarcastic expression, knew better than to provoke someone whom Wyatt referred to as “Mr. Chavez”—a person with a background he was still trying to fully understand.
In the lobby, Jeremiah stood with an air of cold authority. His sharp features—jet-black straight hair, sharply angled eyebrows, piercing blue eyes, and firm lips—made him a striking figure. Even the officers recognized him; they had seen him in military uniform before, and they knew his identity was not something to be casually mentioned.
The officer who had been speaking to Robert hesitated for a moment before approaching again, his demeanor changing entirely. He bowed slightly, showing a mix of respect and admiration as he addressed Jeremiah. “Good afternoon, sir. Are you here about the gun incident? Mr. Chappell is personally conducting the interrogation. Would you like me to call him out?”
The officer’s sudden shift in behavior caught the attention of everyone in the lobby. Robert’s face tightened as the words were spoken. Just then, the door to the interrogation room opened, and Andrew stepped out, leading Bonnie toward Jeremiah. From a distance, Robert and Victor looked visibly uncomfortable.
As they stepped into the hall, Zane emerged from the interrogation room, holding some documents. He hurried out to verify their authenticity and, upon seeing Jeremiah, Andrew, and Bonnie, quickened his pace. Approaching Jeremiah, Zane bowed respectfully, even more so than the officer had. “Mr. Chavez,” he greeted.
Jeremiah briefly glanced at the documents in Zane’s hands, noticing that the text was unreadable as it was held backward. His frown deepened. “Where is she?” he asked, his voice sharp and focused.
Zane, fully aware of who Jeremiah was referring to, responded with unwavering respect. “Mr. Chavez, she’s in the interrogation room.” Before he could finish, he felt a chilling aura emanating from Jeremiah. A shiver ran up his spine. Zane, having risen through the ranks with his keen sense of reading people, knew exactly how dangerous the situation was.
“Did you say she’s in the interrogation room?” Jeremiah’s voice was cold, his words cutting through the tension.
Zane, clearly anxious, quickly clarified, wiping the sweat from his forehead. “Mr. Chavez, it was Ms. Zeller who requested to be questioned. She wanted to avoid causing any trouble for us. But don’t worry, it’s just a routine questioning, nothing out of the ordinary.”
The icy coldness surrounding Jeremiah eased slightly, but his focus remained unwavering. Zane breathed a sigh of relief, mentally noting that only someone like Jeremiah, the major general of Clusia, could invoke such a potent aura when angered. He’s definitely not someone to be trifled with, Zane thought.
Jeremiah, in his usual terse manner, replied, “I’m taking the person with me. Someone will handle the follow-up.”
Zane hesitated for a moment, his expression betraying a mix of uncertainty and complexity. “Mr. Chavez, maybe… maybe this matter doesn’t need your involvement anymore.” He then handed the black document to Jeremiah with both hands, his manner now cautious.
Jeremiah took the document, and upon reading its contents, his brow furrowed. Even someone as composed as he was showed a flicker of surprise, though the expression quickly faded, his poise returning. He didn’t lose his composure like Zane and others had. “Go ahead,” he said, handing the document back.
Zane took the document and walked out, still needing to contact higher-ups to verify its authenticity. Meanwhile, Robert, eager to get on Zane’s good side, moved forward to intercept him.
Since Zane had taken office, the Carter family had tried various methods to win him over, offering money and incentives, but Zane had always remained firm in rejecting them. Eventually, they had given up on this route and started seeking other avenues.
Robert, lacking in social acumen, was fixated on getting Zane on their side to help with Winona’s situation. Victor, however, stayed put, watching the interactions unfold with a growing sense of distaste. He hadn’t heard the full conversation between Zane and Jeremiah, but Zane’s humble demeanor made it clear that this wasn’t a situation to meddle with. My dad must have lost his mind if he’s still trying to push for Winona in this mess, Victor thought.
Robert forced a smile onto his face. “Mr. Chappell, I didn’t expect you to be personally handling this gun case.”
Zane stopped in his tracks, his annoyance apparent. Who is this clueless person who’s stopping me when I’m in a rush? he thought. When he recognized Robert, his expression softened slightly, though his tone remained cold. Despite the Carter family’s repeated failed attempts to win him over, they still held significant influence in Seacrity, and Zane could afford to offer them a basic level of respect.
Zane responded with cool distance. “Hello, Mr. Carter.”
Robert glanced around, particularly eyeing the group where Jeremiah was standing. His smug look faltered when he realized no one seemed to acknowledge his presence. Trying to show off in front of these people is just embarrassing, Zane thought.
Zane noticed Robert staring at Jeremiah’s group, still wearing his self-satisfied expression. He found it odd and couldn’t help but wonder, What’s his deal? Why is he staring like that? If he has something to say, why doesn’t he just say it? Does he think I have all day to play along with him?
With a shift in tone, Zane spoke more seriously. “Mr. Carter, do you have something to discuss? If it’s not urgent, please come back later.”
Robert, oblivious to Zane’s growing impatience, continued trying to make small talk. Victor, clearly fed up, stepped forward and interrupted him. “Mr. Chappell, I’m Victor Carter. The person who fainted during the gun incident today is my fiancée, Winona. I came to the police station to find out how this matter will be handled.”
Zane didn’t expect such a direct response. He paused for a moment, his expression growing more guarded. Why did Yvette shoot Winona specifically? There must be something more to this that I don’t know about, Zane thought, his voice turning colder as he responded, “Hello, Mr. Carter. This matter is still under investigation. Since you are a family member of the involved party, you can wait here. If there are no further issues, we should have a resolution within an hour or so.”
The tension in the room was palpable. While Robert and Victor waited uneasily, the pieces of the puzzle were slowly starting to fall into place, and the situation was far from simple.
