Chapter_227
A plain-looking officer approached Robert, asking, “Hello, how can I assist you?”
Robert, still seething with anger, barely took a moment to assess the situation before he was ready to lash out. However, Victor, who had learned to keep his temper in check, stepped in first. “Hello, we are the family of the pregnant woman involved in today’s shooting at Skyline Plaza. We’re here to handle this matter.”
Robert huffed, maintaining his haughty demeanor. He immediately launched into a tirade aimed at the young officer. “We are the family of Winona, the pregnant woman. She is still in the hospital. Have you arrested that criminal, Yvette? People like her need to be severely punished. She should never be allowed to harm society again. Our lawyers are on their way, and we will make sure she rots in jail. After all these years, the Carter family cannot let this kind of person slip through the cracks!”
The plain-looking officer, clearly taken aback by Robert’s rudeness, lost his patience. He wasn’t there to cater to someone acting so entitled just because they had a bit of money. Keeping his tone strictly professional, he responded, “The suspect you mentioned is currently in the interrogation room. There are seats over there. Please wait and do not disturb others. Thank you for your cooperation.” With that, he turned back to his desk and resumed sorting through case files.
Robert’s face fell when the officer dismissed him so coldly. He wasn’t used to being treated with such indifference. Just as he was about to step forward to argue, Victor quickly grabbed his arm, pulling him back. Leaning in close, Victor’s eyes flashed with deep resentment. “Dad, don’t cause a scene. This is a police station. The Carter family can’t control everything here. If Grandpa finds out, do you really want to face the family’s punishment again?”
Robert, despite his tough exterior, immediately backed down. He knew all too well how harsh his father could be. In his younger days, a few mistakes had earned him beatings that left him bruised and bleeding. The memory of those painful experiences still haunted him.
Seeing that Robert had calmed down, Victor gave him a cold look. “Let’s go, Dad. We’ll sit over there for a while. Yvette has committed a serious offense. It won’t be resolved quickly. Didn’t you call the lawyer? Let’s wait for him.”
Surprised by Victor’s unusually calm demeanor, Robert didn’t have time to dwell on it. Instead, he allowed himself to be led to the waiting area.
Bonnie had just finished her takeout when she heard someone call her name. Looking up, she saw Victor approaching. Her expression instantly turned cold. Victor, just like Winona, is here to cause trouble for Yvette, she thought, narrowing her eyes as she watched him walk toward her.
Victor stopped in front of her and asked with an interrogative tone, “What are you doing here?”
Bonnie tossed her empty lunch box into the trash can and coolly replied, “What’s it to you?”
Victor blinked, momentarily taken aback. But rather than getting angry, he remained composed. Behind him, Robert stepped forward and took a look at Bonnie. His eyes lit up, a leer forming on his face. She wasn’t stunningly beautiful, but her cute appearance was undeniably appealing. Robert couldn’t help himself. “Are you here for Yvette? Do you know about her pulling a gun on Winona?” Victor asked, his voice dripping with disdain.
Bonnie glared at him, exuding a formidable presence as she spoke with deliberate clarity. “It’s all Winona’s fault. It has nothing to do with Yve. If Winona hadn’t started trouble and slapped me, Yve wouldn’t have gotten angry. You haven’t even figured out what happened, and you’re already trying to defend your fiancée. You two are a perfect match—like snakes and rats.”
Since I’ve been hanging out with Yve, my ability to stand up for myself has really improved. I can’t back down now, I can’t let Yve down, Bonnie thought, silently cheering herself on.
Victor’s face turned green with anger, but he didn’t respond. Robert, however, couldn’t stay silent. Winona was his precious daughter now, and he couldn’t let anyone talk about her like that. “How can you be so disrespectful? Winona is pregnant, and it’s normal for her to have mood swings. She just slapped you. How much could it have hurt? Can’t you just take it? Haven’t you heard the saying, ‘take a step back and the world opens up’? You’re a student at Argol University. What are you even arguing with a pregnant woman for?”
Bonnie was stunned by Robert’s shameless remarks. Victor also shifted uncomfortably, realizing that his father’s devotion to Winona was clearly causing him to go to ridiculous lengths. Dad really will go to any extreme to protect Winona, Victor thought with an odd mixture of disbelief and resignation.
Bonnie’s face flushed with anger at Robert’s words, but she took a deep breath, trying to remain composed. “It’s not you who beat me; it’s your shamelessness,” she shot back.
Just as Robert was about to reprimand Bonnie with his usual airs of superiority, a familiar voice called from a distance. “Bonnie?”
Bonnie turned in surprise, and Andrew’s voice hit her like a wave of relief. She looked up, suddenly feeling a bit lost.
Victor and Robert both turned around, and the chill in their spines was unmistakable. This was the man even Wyatt referred to as “Mr. Chavez.” How could they forget that he was Yvette’s biggest supporter?
Andrew approached, and when he saw the distinct handprint on Bonnie’s face, he stopped abruptly. He didn’t say anything right away, but his expression turned hard as he continued walking toward her. As he passed by Victor and Robert, his gaze was sharp and filled with an icy intensity that made both men instinctively take a step back.
When Andrew reached Bonnie, his focus immediately locked onto the handprint on her cheek. His tone was a mix of frustration and tenderness. “Who did this?”
Bonnie’s eyes filled with tears, and she bit her lip, unable to speak. Tears fell freely down her face. Andrew, at a loss, reached up with his sleeve to gently wipe them away. “I’m just asking, you know. If you don’t want to say, it’s okay. Don’t cry.”
Bonnie hiccupped through her sobs, her teary eyes meeting Andrew’s. A strange, tingling sensation rose in Andrew’s chest, making him look away awkwardly. He felt an unfamiliar sense of discomfort but quickly masked it.
Bonnie sniffled, wiping away her tears before explaining, “It was Winona. Yve and I were shopping, and when Yve went to the restroom, I wandered around a bit. That’s when I ran into Winona. She started the trouble, and I couldn’t avoid it. She hit me.”
Andrew’s eyes narrowed, his usually carefree demeanor shifting to something much colder, more calculated. “Winona? Is she still alive?”
Bonnie shook her head, dazed. “No, but then Yve came and told me to hit her back. I slapped her twice, and when we left, she fainted. She’s probably in the hospital now.”
Andrew’s gaze turned to Robert and Victor, his eyes flashing dangerously. The air around him seemed to freeze as a sense of menace emanated from him. Both men instinctively took a step back, startled by the sudden shift in Andrew’s presence.
Andrew reached out, gently touching the spot where Bonnie had been struck, his expression softening. “How do you want her to pay for this?”
