Chapter 249
Yvette ended the call with a swift click of the phone.
The three people at the door stared at her in silence. The first was Samuel, the young heir of Bamboo Hall, accompanied by the general manager and two assistants. Samuel had just returned from overseas this year to take over Bamboo Hall. His goal was to expand the business internationally, constantly seeking partnerships with overseas companies to bring in new investments.
Samuel gave Yvette a cold look, his eyes briefly scanning her.
Samuel thought to himself, She’s attractive, but a bit naive. She talks about withdrawing investments as if she can just make things happen on a whim. Does she even understand what Bamboo Hall is all about?
Breaking the silence, Samuel spoke, his tone a mixture of disbelief and arrogance. “Miss, that phone call you just made felt a little… rehearsed. I don’t know where you heard about our supposed investment need, or who you called, but perhaps you don’t fully understand what Bamboo Hall stands for. You can’t just waltz in here and start making decisions for us.”
The two assistants, who were eager to please Samuel, nodded and looked at each other with a shared understanding. One of them spoke up, “Miss, our manager has already asked you to leave. Why continue to make things difficult for yourself? It’s clear you’re not welcome here.”
The taller assistant added with an air of superiority, “Miss, are you sure you’re not up to something? What exactly are you trying to achieve here?”
Samuel hadn’t really considered this angle before, but hearing the taller assistant’s remark made him reflect a bit more. His vanity took over as he considered Yvette’s appearance and charm.
Samuel thought to himself, She does seem quite appealing. Perhaps I could get to know her better. I might even be able to convince her to work with us.
With that thought, Samuel’s attitude softened. He gave Yvette a more polished, confident smile. “Miss, I apologize for my earlier behavior. It seems I’ve been misinformed, and I truly regret any offense caused. However, today isn’t the right time to discuss personal matters. Mr. Owens is coming to dine with an important guest soon, and I’m sure you can understand that business must take precedence. We can speak more tomorrow if you’d like.”
The two assistants were taken aback by the sudden change in Samuel’s demeanor. They had expected him to remain distant and cold toward Yvette, not to treat her with such diplomacy. But they quickly fell in line, hopeful that Samuel’s actions would result in some form of resolution.
Yvette, on the other hand, stood still, her face calm and unreadable. She had been watching the three of them carefully, noticing how quickly they had switched from hostility to hospitality once Samuel seemed to soften. Her expression remained unchanged, her gaze unwavering as she assessed the situation.
For a moment, the atmosphere became tense. Yvette remained composed, the cool confidence she exuded creating an almost invisible barrier between herself and the others.
The assistants instinctively took a step back, feeling an almost palpable sense of unease radiating from Yvette. They could tell she wasn’t someone who would be easily swayed by words alone.
Then, out of nowhere, Samuel’s phone began ringing. His expression changed from one of mild discomfort to sudden tension, as though something was about to go awry.
He glanced at the phone, visibly relaxing when he saw the name on the screen—his father. Samuel assumed it was just another routine call reminding him about dinner.
Without waiting for his father to speak, Samuel answered quickly, “Dad, I told you I’m not coming home for dinner today. Mr. Owens is coming over for an important meeting, and I’m swamped with work here at Bamboo Hall. You should just eat without me.”
But before Samuel could continue, a booming voice erupted from the other end of the line. “What do you mean you’re busy? The investment deal fell through! FastPulse Technologies has rejected our proposal. All of our efforts over the past year have been wasted! What happened? You said this was a done deal! Figure out what went wrong and see if there’s any chance we can save this!”
Samuel’s face went pale as his father’s words echoed in his mind. For a split second, he forgot everything around him. His eyes locked onto Yvette, the realization hitting him hard. He hadn’t made the connection earlier, but now it was clear: the phone call Yvette had made earlier had something to do with FastPulse Technologies pulling out of the deal.
His grip tightened around the phone as his father’s voice continued to scold him. Samuel’s jaw clenched. He was caught between his anger and his growing sense of disbelief. How had she managed to influence this situation so quickly?
“Dad,” Samuel stammered, now visibly shaken. “I understand. I’ll look into it and call you back. Don’t worry.” He hung up abruptly, still processing the shock.
The two assistants, who had overheard the entire conversation, exchanged nervous glances. They were now fully aware that Yvette had just played a significant role in causing the fallout with FastPulse Technologies. They were frozen in place, their earlier arrogance now replaced with deep regret.
Samuel was stunned. He had never encountered someone like Yvette, and the fact that she had orchestrated such a move in a matter of hours left him speechless. FastPulse Technologies, after all, was managed by the formidable Lucy Raglan, a woman known for being nearly impossible to sway.
Samuel’s anger began to simmer beneath the surface, but he quickly realized that if he didn’t handle this carefully, things could get even worse. He had no choice but to apologize.
In an attempt to salvage the situation, Samuel turned back to Yvette, putting on an almost apologetic expression. “Miss, I must apologize for my earlier behavior. I was misled by my assistants, and I now realize my mistake. Please, allow me to make amends. I hope this incident won’t ruin your dining experience with us today.”
Samuel then turned to his assistants, his tone now stern. “You two, come over here and apologize to Miss Yvette. If she doesn’t forgive you, then you will need to leave Bamboo Hall immediately.”
The two assistants, now in full panic mode, immediately began to beg for Yvette’s forgiveness. “Miss, we’re so sorry. We shouldn’t have treated you this way. Please, don’t hold it against us. If we lose our jobs, it will be disastrous for us.”
Yvette remained unfazed, her hands tucked casually in her pockets. She watched the scene unfold with quiet amusement, an almost imperceptible smile playing on her lips. How predictable, she thought.
The three of them, believing they had made their case, waited for Yvette to soften. They assumed she would forgive them, thinking that their apologies would be enough.
But Yvette’s response was as cold as it was direct.
“Forgive you?” she repeated slowly, her tone deliberate.
The three of them looked up at her with a mix of hope and anticipation. But then, she spoke again.
“No,” she said, her voice final and unwavering.
The three of them were stunned into silence. Samuel, now fully aware that he couldn’t rely on charm or flattery, felt his frustration rise again. He didn’t understand why Yvette was so firm.
However, he quickly refocused on the bigger picture—the potential loss of the investment from FastPulse Technologies. He couldn’t afford to let this matter escalate any further.
“Since Miss Yvette has made her decision, I have no choice but to let you go,” Samuel said coldly, turning to the assistants. “Please process your resignations immediately.”
The assistants, now defeated, stopped their pleading. They glared at Yvette, but dared not speak out. They simply stepped aside, resigned to their fate.
Samuel then turned back to Yvette, his expression forced into a smile, though the tension was palpable. “Miss, I’ve resolved the issue with my staff. Now, may I ask for your assistance in persuading Ms. Raglan to reconsider withdrawing her investment? A partnership between Bamboo Hall and FastPulse Technologies would be mutually beneficial, and it would be a shame to let such a minor issue ruin it.”
Samuel spoke with all the politeness he could muster, hoping that Yvette would see the value of the deal and agree to help him salvage the situation.
Yvette raised an eyebrow and looked at him, her eyes cold yet calculating. “Are you finished?”
Samuel nodded, unsure of what to expect next.
He added, “Miss, I don’t know what your relationship with Ms. Raglan is, but in Betrico, the Lake family holds some influence. I hope you understand that it’s better not to let this become a bigger issue than it needs to be.”
The words came across as a subtle threat, though Samuel tried to maintain a respectful tone. He thought he was being clever, but only time would tell if his approach would work.
