Chapter_270
The dinner conversation had shifted quite dramatically, the mood taking a turn that no one had expected. As the group discussed Jeremiah’s girlfriend, a subject that seemed to hold a great deal of importance, James’s reaction caught everyone’s attention. Despite his usual gruff demeanor, there was something peculiar about his behavior tonight. It wasn’t lost on anyone that he seemed more invested in the situation than he would have been in the past.
The topic of Jeremiah and his girlfriend had certainly stirred the pot, with Jase being the first to notice the strange dynamic forming in the room. He couldn’t help but wonder if his old friend, James, was reacting unusually because of some deeper concern or personal attachment. Maybe it was just the stress of daily work at the lab; whatever the case, it was clear that James was more invested in the subject than anyone had expected.
“Well, I’ll check with that little brat about his schedule,” Jase said, breaking the awkward silence. “Let’s see when he’s available.” His tone was casual enough, though his underlying authority could be heard in his words. He was, after all, the patriarch of the family, and despite the casual banter, he was the one ultimately in control of when and how family matters would unfold.
Ronald and Walter both nodded with approval, the tension easing slightly. But then, James, who had been unusually quiet for the last few moments, spoke up again. “Make sure to prepare an extra portion—my granddaughter will be coming too.”
There was an immediate stillness in the room. The mention of a granddaughter was unexpected, leaving everyone frozen in place for a moment. Yusef raised an eyebrow, and Walter’s expression shifted between confusion and curiosity. Jase, on the other hand, gave James a long look, his skepticism evident.
“What are you talking about, James?” Jase asked, his voice dripping with suspicion and amusement. He couldn’t tell if James was joking or if there was something more to his comment.
James just shrugged, a hint of mischief dancing in his eyes. “Oh, you know… she’s been around lately. Thought it’d be nice to have her join. I’m sure Jeremiah’s girlfriend and my granddaughter would get along just fine.” There was a playful tone to his voice, though it was clear he wasn’t giving much away.
Ronald, eager to steer the conversation away from any potential conflict, quickly interjected. “Well, whatever the case, it’s a nice thought. It’s been a while since we’ve had everyone over. We’ll just have to make sure it works for everyone’s schedule.” He forced a smile, hoping to ease the tension building in the room.
Jase, however, wasn’t quite ready to let it go. He glanced at James with suspicion still in his eyes. “What’s really going on here, James?” he asked. “When did this granddaughter of yours suddenly appear on the scene? Are you pulling our leg or is there something we don’t know?”
James only responded with a nonchalant look and a shrug. “She’s around. Thought it would be a nice family gathering. You know how it is,” he said, avoiding further explanation.
The conversation shifted back to more mundane matters, but the question about James’s granddaughter lingered in the air. It was rare for James to make such a casual remark about a family member, especially one he hadn’t mentioned before. Jase, ever the keen observer, couldn’t help but feel there was more to the story than what James was letting on. But for now, he let it slide. There were more immediate matters to consider.
As the group began to leave, Jase’s mind was still spinning. He exchanged a final look with James, who was now grinning widely, as if enjoying the mystery he had just stirred up. The old man’s playful behavior was typical, but Jase couldn’t shake the feeling that James knew something he wasn’t sharing.
“We’ll see what happens with the Chavez family,” Jase said as he adjusted his coat. His words carried an air of finality, though there was something slightly ominous in his tone. “I have a feeling things are about to get interesting.”
With that, the group began to break up. Each person, in their own way, was left with something to ponder. Jase, however, couldn’t shake the feeling that the Chavez family was heading toward a new chapter—one filled with unexpected twists. Whether it was the mysterious granddaughter or something else entirely, it was clear that the dynamic of the family was shifting, and no one, not even Jase, knew where it would lead.
