Chapter_237
Victor clenched his teeth, slowly bending his knees as he prepared to kneel before Bonnie.
Bonnie blinked in confusion, feeling an unsettling sensation wash over her. What’s going on here? she thought, stepping back instinctively. If he kneels, it surely shouldn’t be to me—what if it brings me bad luck or something?
“Victor, what exactly do you think you’re doing here?” she asked, her tone sharp. “Do you really believe I’m that naive? You’re putting on this act in front of everyone to pressure me into forgiving Winona, aren’t you? I’m not buying it. If you truly want to apologize, then do it in private, but don’t make a public spectacle out of this.”
She smiled slightly, but her words hit Victor like a punch to the gut.
Victor, expecting Bonnie to soften under the weight of his public display, stood half-bent. He had assumed that with all these eyes on her, Bonnie would feel the pressure to forgive. Instead, she saw right through him and called him out for what he really was—a manipulator.
Realizing he had been exposed, Victor hesitated but managed to straighten up, albeit with frustration. His voice was tight. “Bonnie, you’ve misunderstood. I didn’t mean it like that,” he stammered. “I thought being more formal would make it easier for you to accept my apology. I swear, I don’t have any other motives.”
Bonnie didn’t flinch. She stood tall, her gaze unflinching. She let out a cold snort. “I’m not stupid, Victor,” she replied, her voice steady. “You’re trying to guilt-trip me, and it won’t work. Maybe in the past, I would’ve fallen for it, but not anymore.”
Since becoming close with Yvette, Bonnie had learned a key lesson: Stop caring so much about what others think. Trying to please everyone only led to exhaustion. Now, she could see right through Victor’s manipulation, and she wasn’t going to give in.
She crossed her arms and looked at him with a calm, piercing stare. “Let me make this clear, Victor. I know what’s right and wrong. It was Winona who acted out yesterday, and I’ve already dealt with it. What does your family have to do with it? This whole thing is ridiculous. If you’re struggling to think straight, maybe you should go to a doctor and get checked out,” she said, her tone utterly serious.
Victor, stunned, found himself at a loss for words. He didn’t expect Bonnie to be so direct. However, a strange sense of relief also washed over him. Bonnie wasn’t backing down. She was tough, much tougher than he thought.
He glanced at the crowd surrounding them, his eyes flicking nervously. He had underestimated her influence—Bonnie had connections, and the Mitchell family in Betrico wasn’t something to mess with. It was as though she had been hiding in plain sight this whole time, and he was just realizing it.
“So, Bonnie, does this mean you’ve forgiven me?” Victor pressed, his voice now tense with underlying desperation. “If you do, maybe you can talk to your fiancé’s sister and get her to back off. The Carter family realizes their mistake, and we’d appreciate it if you could help us out.”
The crowd gasped in surprise. Most of the students from the physics department stared at Bonnie, whispering among themselves.
One friend of Bonnie’s shouted, “Bonnie, you didn’t say you had a fiancé! That’s a surprise!”
“Yeah, Bonnie! Who’s the lucky guy? Does he go here? Do we know him?” another chimed in.
“No way, Bonnie. You’ve already got someone? You’re moving too fast!” someone else teased.
“When’s the wedding? You can’t just get secretly married without telling us!” another voice rang out.
Bonnie’s face turned bright red. What a mess, she thought, mortified. Where the heck did this fiancé come from? Is Victor trying to ruin my reputation on purpose?
In a fit of frustration, Bonnie marched up to Victor and kicked him in the shin. “What are you talking about, you jerk? Where did this fiancé come from? Are you completely out of your mind? If you’ve got issues, go see a doctor, but stop making things up and embarrassing me!”
Victor stood frozen, staring at her in shock. His mind raced. It must be true—she wouldn’t be so upset otherwise. But why did Samantha say that Bonnie is her sister-in-law?
Meanwhile, on the same floor, Andrew was in the physics classroom, talking to Samantha on the phone.
“Got it, Samantha,” he said, his voice serious. “Don’t worry, I’ve got it under control. You know how Arnold is—if I mess around with Bonnie, he’d have my head.”
Samantha, sitting in her office, flipped through the paperwork, signing it off one by one. “Alright, as long as you’re sure. You called me yesterday because you thought this was urgent, but if it’s all settled now, I don’t need to get involved. Just remember, Andrew, take the problem down at the root and show no mercy. You know what I mean?”
Andrew chuckled and scratched his ear. “Yeah, I know. You’re the Rose of Betrico. No one dares to mess with us. I’ll take care of it.”
Samantha laughed, a soft sound. “Good. By the way, I bought the horse-riding arena you wanted out on the outskirts of Betrico. We’ll transfer the paperwork to your name once you get back.”
Andrew’s mood lifted immediately. I’ve got to tell Bonnie about this, he thought. Maybe she’s not into horses, but I can teach her. I have time.
As Andrew made his way to the physics department, he noticed a crowd gathered outside. His attention immediately focused on Bonnie and Victor. He saw Bonnie kick Victor, and their eyes met. Bonnie looked absolutely furious.
Andrew stepped forward, cutting through the crowd, his protective instincts kicking in. “What’s going on?” he asked, his voice low but full of concern. “Did he upset you?”
Bonnie was startled for a moment, then quickly pointed at Victor. “It’s nothing. This crazy guy kept insisting I forgive Winona and the Carter family. The most absurd thing? He says I have a fiancé. Seriously, where did that come from? How could I possibly have a fiancé out of nowhere?”
The crowd, which had been eagerly watching the drama unfold, fell silent.
Andrew scratched the back of his head, his expression sheepish. “Wow, this is a mess. I didn’t expect it to turn out like this.”
Bonnie glared at him. “How would you feel if someone suddenly claimed you had a fiancé?”
Andrew mumbled under his breath, “If it were you, I wouldn’t mind.”
Unfortunately, no one else heard him. The moment was lost amidst the noise and confusion of the crowd.
