Chapter_253
After the meal, James turned to Yvette and asked, “Do you need a ride home? Where are you staying now?”
Yvette looked up, smiling politely. “No need, Grandpa. Someone’s coming to pick me up.”
Leaning on his cane, James quickly inquired, “Your boyfriend?”
Yvette nodded slightly. “Yeah.”
Instantly, James felt a pang in his heart. He’d just gotten to know Yvette, and now she already had a boyfriend. Who could he complain to? His thoughts raced. He’d been hoping to meet this guy, to assess him and perhaps drive him away. James couldn’t help but think, What’s so great about getting married anyway? It’s all cooking, cleaning, and chores. Someone as talented as Yvette should be thriving in the field of physics, not stuck with some guy. In his mind, No one is truly worthy of her.
So, James stood by the roadside, silently watching, not moving to leave, instead choosing to keep Yvette company.
Yvette tilted her head slightly, her profile illuminated by the streetlight, making her look even more beautiful. “If you’re tired, go ahead,” she suggested.
James guessed he wouldn’t be able to sleep unless he saw Yvette’s boyfriend that night. He shook his head stubbornly. Though his eyelids were heavy with fatigue, he still refused to leave. “I’m not tired. But you know, Yvette, it’s pretty dangerous for a girl like you to be out here alone at night. And your boyfriend doesn’t seem too reliable. He’s already ten minutes late. Doesn’t exactly inspire confidence!”
James hadn’t even seen Yvette’s boyfriend yet, but he was already speaking ill of him.
Just then, a black SUV pulled up across the street. The driver’s side door opened, and a man in a black suit stepped out—Emmett.
Emmett was strikingly handsome, enough to stand out in a crowd. But, due to his association with Jeremiah, he was often overlooked. However, now that he was by himself, he drew the attention of people around, especially when they noticed his car’s license plate. There was a sense of curiosity. Who was this man? What wealthy family did he belong to?
James, noticing the newcomer, recognized Emmett instantly. He had seen him a few times at parties and events. Emmett was known as the personal assistant to Jeremiah, well-regarded for his cold and reserved demeanor.
Could it be that Yvette’s boyfriend is this guy? James thought. He knew Emmett to be reliable, but in this context, he wasn’t sure what to make of him.
As Emmett drew closer, he noticed Yvette standing with one hand in her pocket. His eyes lit up, a mixture of relief and unease washing over him. I’m ten minutes late. Is she upset? he thought, worried that Yvette might be angry.
Emmett’s gaze fell on the older man standing beside Yvette, and recognition dawned. James Owens? He blinked, shocked. Yvette came here to meet him? This is surprising. How long has it been since James appeared on the scene? Emmett couldn’t suppress his curiosity. What other surprises does she have in store for us?
But Emmett quickly composed himself, pushing away the thoughts. I should focus. Let’s just get this over with.
He walked toward them, trying to stay calm but inwardly groaning. Mr. Chavez is off saving people, and I’m stuck here taking the fall. Is this fair?
When Emmett reached them, he bowed slightly and greeted James. “Hello, Mr. Owens.”
James gave him a curt nod but didn’t offer any warmth in return. His thoughts were too occupied with the idea that Emmett was connected to Yvette.
Emmett, oblivious to James’s cold demeanor, turned to Yvette and apologized. “Sorry I’m late.”
Yvette, unfazed, glanced at him. Her gaze was sharp and distant as she spoke. “Where is he?”
Emmett immediately explained, “Mr. Chavez and I encountered a bus accident on our way here. The driver had a heart attack, and the bus lost control, causing a multi-car collision. Over a hundred people were injured. Mr. Chavez is managing things at the scene. He asked me to bring you back to Skyland first, and he’ll return once everything is under control.”
James, who had been listening closely, immediately asked, “Is it serious? What about the casualties?”
Emmett quickly reassured him, “Don’t worry, Mr. Owens. It’s not as severe as it seems. Mr. Chavez has already called in military doctors. Everything should be under control soon.”
Yvette remained calm and turned to James, saying, “Grandpa, you can go ahead and head home.”
The word “Grandpa” took Emmett by surprise. His face froze in shock. Wait, how did Yvette get a grandpa in just a few hours? He thought, wide-eyed. Is this some high-profile old marshal or national treasure? This combination is enough to make anyone envious.
James nodded, though the wheels in his head were spinning. “Come visit when you have time,” he said, before getting into the car with Michael and leaving.
Once they were gone, Yvette took her phone from her pocket and dialed a number. Without hesitation, she got straight to the point. “Hello, do you need my help?”
On the other end, the voice of Jeremiah responded. There was a brief pause. “No need. The doctors just arrived. The initial checkup shows no major issues. You and Emmett should head back to Skyland. I’ll return once I’m done here.”
Yvette, hearing the reassurance in Jeremiah’s voice, understood that the situation wasn’t serious. She responded simply, “Okay,” before hanging up.
Emmett, standing nearby, couldn’t help but twitch his lips. What an unromantic woman, he thought. I expected her to express some concern for Mr. Chavez, but all she asked was whether he needed help. The love lives of the rich and powerful are certainly unconventional.
Back in the car, James was still processing what had happened. He turned to Michael, who was happily counting his fingers. “Michael, did that man just mention Mr. Chavez?”
Michael stopped counting, confused, before suddenly clapping his hands and saying, “Mr. Chavez, Mr. Chavez, Mr. Chavez!”
James took a deep breath, his mind racing. So it wasn’t Emmett who took Yvette away after all, but Jeremiah, the notorious demon from the Chavez family. I should’ve known. Even though James was reluctant to admit it, he couldn’t ignore the fact that Jeremiah was truly remarkable. In Betrico, he was the leading figure of his generation—no one dared claim to be better.
James thought bitterly, That cunning, unscrupulous old man. How is he still around? He frowned, thinking about Jase’s apparent favoring of Samantha. But if he tries to separate Yvette from Jeremiah, I will make him regret it.
