Chapter_230
After hanging up the phone, Zane stood silently for a few minutes, collecting his thoughts, before finally heading out.
In the interrogation room, the two officers had given up. They were now faced with a girl holding an Interpol badge and Chisia’s youngest major general—two influential figures who could easily turn the entire police force upside down.
Zane pushed open the interrogation room door and stepped inside. As soon as his eyes landed on the people in the room, his gaze sharpened.
Except for the ordinary girl beside Yvette, both Jeremiah and Andrew were not to be underestimated. Zane approached the table and placed the black badge on it, both hands flat on the surface.
He felt conflicted. A world-renowned mysterious artist suddenly turned Interpol agent? Her identity was top secret, known only to those with the highest clearance. What kind of background did she have?
After a moment of thought, Zane carefully chose his words. “Ms. Zeller, we’ve confirmed everything with the authorities. There’s no problem with your identity. Although your clearance level is so high that Interpol won’t disclose further details, it’s enough to verify who you are. We’ll handle the incident from here. You’re free to leave now.”
Andrew, standing to the side, didn’t notice the details on the black badge and assumed Jeremiah was simply stepping in to protect Yvette. But according to Zane’s words, that wasn’t the case at all. Interpol? He scoffed. Ridiculous!
Unable to keep his thoughts to himself, Andrew asked directly, “Interpol? What’s that got to do with Yvette?”
Zane glanced at Jeremiah before responding to Andrew, “Mr. Mitchell, Ms. Zeller is a member of Interpol.”
Andrew stood frozen for a moment, his mouth hanging open in disbelief. He then noticed Yvette’s calm, blank expression—she didn’t seem like someone directly involved in such serious matters. Yvette works for Interpol? he thought, Could anything be more exciting than this? His mind raced. Man, comparing myself to others can really drive you crazy! It was now clear to him—Yvette was a big shot.
Andrew had heard of Interpol from his dad, who spoke of it with reverence. But hearing that someone from that mysterious organization was casually sitting here, looking so indifferent and relaxed, was truly eye-opening.
Bonnie tugged on Andrew’s sleeve, pulling him back to reality. “What’s going on? Interpol? Is that the same Interpol we see on TV?” Bonnie asked, her eyes sparkling with curiosity and admiration.
Andrew nodded but didn’t explain further. The reality of Interpol was far more powerful and elusive than what the public usually saw. It wasn’t just full of top-tier officers, as most people believed—it was a hub for elite individuals from around the world. Being an officer there was considered one of the least significant roles.
Yvette, unfazed by Andrew’s questions, tucked her legs back under her chair and shifted slightly. She tilted her head, half-closing her eyes, her posture relaxed as she looked at Jeremiah. Her features were captivating and enigmatic, and she spoke with a low, husky voice. “I’m hungry,” she said.
Jeremiah took her hand gently. “I’ve already ordered the barbecue. Let’s go.”
Yvette nodded slightly in acknowledgment.
Andrew, eager to get involved, turned to Zane. “Hey, buddy, are you coming with us?”
Zane shook his head, a small smile tugging at his lips. “No thanks, Mr. Chavez, Mr. Mitchell. Enjoy your meal.” Then he sighed deeply. As a struggling officer, he still had to stay at the police station to deal with further tasks. And the Carters were still an issue.
As he sat back at his desk, Zane thought of Robert’s earlier expression. It’s clear he came with bad intentions, but he’s going to leave empty-handed. With Ms. Zeller’s status, who would dare act against her? Besides, she’s Mr. Chavez’s girlfriend. Even the Betrico Police Station has asked me to ensure her safety. Who do the Carters think they are?
Meanwhile, in the waiting room, Robert was growing more and more frustrated. Feeling his anger boil over, he vented to Victor. “Victor, go find out what’s going on. Why has Zane been in there for so long without any updates?”
Victor sat calmly on the bench, eyes narrowed. “Dad, aren’t you being a bit too concerned about Winona’s matters?”
Robert felt a sudden jolt in his chest. Am I being too anxious? He quickly avoided Victor’s gaze, his voice faltering as he tried to justify himself. “Aren’t I doing this for you? Winona’s carrying your child. What if something goes wrong? Your mom’s been wanting a grandchild for so long, and we can’t have any issues with her pregnancy. I’m standing up for both of you, and you’re still criticizing me?”
Victor half-closed his eyes, disappointed. He always managed to keep his hands clean.
After a few moments of silence, Victor finally spoke, his words deliberate. “Just wait and see.”
Feeling a twinge of guilt, Robert fell silent, not daring to say another word.
Then, the door to the interrogation room swung open. Two officers came out first, grinning broadly, followed by Yvette, Jeremiah, Andrew, and Bonnie, with Zane accompanying them.
When Victor saw Yvette and Jeremiah together, a wave of regret washed over him. I’ve been such a fool. If I hadn’t called off the engagement, I could still be Yvette’s fiancé. But now, it’s too late.
Bonnie walked up to Yvette and whispered something in her ear, pointing toward Robert.
Yvette glanced at Robert and Victor with a cool expression. Her brows arched slightly as she casually slipped one hand into her pocket, exuding a rebellious charm. Without another word, she turned away, ignoring them completely.
Zane watched as Yvette and the others got into the car and drove off. Only then did he turn back toward Robert and Victor.
Once everyone had left, Robert’s courage seemed to grow. He assumed that Jeremiah’s influence had allowed Yvette to leave after the public display of a firearm. But now that Jeremiah was gone, Robert felt emboldened.
Storming up to Zane, Robert fumed, “Mr. Chappell, how could you be so biased? How could Yvette just walk out of here after waving a gun in public? What’s going on?”
Victor watched with a mocking smile. While Mr. Chavez was here, Robert didn’t dare utter a word. Now that he’s gone, Robert’s taking out his frustration? Where did he get the courage?
All the while, everyone in the police station was watching.
Victor gave a fake smile and turned to Robert. “Mr. Robert, this is a police station. Our investigations are always fair and just. You wanted to know the result of the gun incident? Well, the verdict is in. Yvette has been acquitted, and the matter is concluded.”
Robert stared, wide-eyed, in disbelief. How could such a serious matter be dismissed so easily? How is this possible? The sheer audacity left him speechless. How influential is Jeremiah, really? First Wyatt, and now even Zane, the police station chief, shows him this level of respect.
Even Victor found the whole situation somewhat unbelievable. In this country, someone carrying a gun openly should be facing years in prison. Cases like these weren’t supposed to be closed so easily.
The father and son stood in mutual silence, both in shock.
Not willing to give up, Robert tried to use his connections to put pressure on Zane. “Mr. Chappell, the Carter family has connections at the top. Aren’t you afraid I’ll report you for openly defending Yvette?”
Zane looked at Robert with a mysterious smile, leaving Robert completely puzzled.
