Chapter_236
Simon gestured to the spicy snacks on the table. “I asked Tobias about these,” he said, his tone casual. “He said you young folks love them.”
Yvette turned her head slightly, paused for a moment, and then spoke in her usual slow, deliberate manner. “I’ve never tried them before.”
Simon blinked, momentarily disappointed. It seemed he’d made a poor choice—Yvette didn’t seem fond of the snacks at all.
Yvette glanced at him briefly, her expression neutral, before saying, “I guess I might like them.”
Simon’s face lit up with joy, though his awkwardness was still palpable. Yvette lowered her gaze, gently rubbing the rim of her cup. Should I have said that? she wondered.
There was a reason Simon had called her here today. Recalling his instructions from Betrico, he quickly straightened up, his tone shifting to something more serious.
“James from the physics lab in Betrico invited you to attend the new energy conference,” Simon said, his voice firm. “He wants you there to witness the launch of this breakthrough. After all, without your involvement, we wouldn’t have made it this far so quickly. James hopes you’ll consider the offer seriously.”
Yvette’s lips pressed together, her gaze unwavering as she looked up at Simon. “No,” she said flatly.
Simon paused, surprised. She’s really turning this down? he thought. If it were anyone else, they’d be jumping at the chance for such a prestigious opportunity.
But then, remembering Yvette’s other identity, Cyanbird, Simon realized he understood. If she were the type to crave attention, just one of her identities would attract a sea of people trying to gain favor with her.
He took a sip of his coffee, then spoke again, his voice even more earnest. “James has been working on this new energy project for years. Your sudden involvement gave him the fresh direction he needed, and now it’s ready for launch in just a few months. You’ve made a huge contribution here. Are you really willing to give up this credit?”
Yvette tore open a bag of chips, not lifting her eyes. Her tone remained indifferent. “Yeah,” she hummed nonchalantly.
Simon could see right through her—he knew Yvette well enough to understand that she wasn’t swayed by fame or accolades. “Is it troublesome for you?” he asked, his voice softer.
Yvette raised her eyes, her expression as calm as ever. “Yes, I think it is troublesome.”
Simon’s hand froze around his coffee cup. I figured as much, he thought. After a beat, he spoke again, his tone shifting. “James has another idea. You can attend without showing your face. Your name would still be included in the research results, and you could use ‘S’ as a code name. How does that sound?”
Yvette leaned back, her posture relaxed as she asked softly, “Have you already agreed to this?”
Simon nodded without hesitation. “Yes, James suggested it, and he truly hopes you’ll consider it.”
Yvette’s delicate brows arched slightly, a flicker of annoyance passing across her face.
Sensing her irritation, Simon quickly added, “James isn’t trying to pressure you. If you don’t want to go to Betrico, that’s perfectly fine. It’s your choice.”
Yvette’s eyes softened, her expression more contemplative now. “Time and place,” she said, her voice calm.
Simon’s face brightened instantly. He jumped up from his seat, retrieved the invitation from his desk, and placed it in front of Yvette. “Here’s the invitation for the event. It has all the details you need. Would you like someone to pick you up when you get to Betrico?” he asked.
Yvette glanced up at him, her voice cool and controlled. “No, thanks.”
Simon nodded, his mind already on other matters. Yvette is Mr. Chavez’s girlfriend. Once she steps into Betrico, Mr. Chavez’s territory, there’s no need for me to worry about arranging any pickup.
Before leaving, Yvette paused at the door, a small half-smile playing at the corner of her lips. Her voice was slow and measured. “Change the username. It doesn’t sound right.”
Simon froze, his face flushing. The sting of rejection made him feel embarrassed. Change it to what? he thought, unsure of how to proceed.
He decided to leave this problem for Tobias to handle—after all, it was too tricky for someone like him with a science background.
He cleared his throat, trying to hide his discomfort. “That username was Tobias’s idea,” he said, with a sheepish laugh. “I told him not to use it, but he insisted. I’ll have him change it soon. Don’t worry about it.”
Yvette gave him a neutral nod, her face polite but distant, before she walked out of the Principal’s office.
As she stepped into the hallway, she unexpectedly crossed paths with Patrick, who was there to deliver something to Simon. Patrick, trying to act aloof, meant to give her the cold shoulder, but Yvette breezed past him without even sparing him a glance.
Patrick seethed in frustration, stomping his foot in impotent rage. The students passing by noticed the scene and quickly snapped pictures, uploading them to the school forum. The posts exploded with teasing comments, and soon, rumors spread about Patrick possibly being mentally unstable.
Seeing the photos later, Patrick’s anger only deepened. His hatred for Yvette grew, but he couldn’t find a way to get back at her. All he could do was fume quietly, impotent with rage.
Meanwhile, in the physics classroom, Bonnie was discussing a problem with John when a classmate approached her, saying someone wanted to talk to her. Thinking little of it, Bonnie stepped outside, only to find Victor standing by the door, looking around. “Here, here,” he called out to her.
Bonnie’s instincts kicked in, and she quickly stepped back, her eyes narrowing with suspicion. Victor? Is he the one who wants to talk to me? she thought, This fox trying to speak to a hen? Something’s off.
“What’s up? Were you the one wanting to talk to me?” she asked cautiously.
People passed by in the hallway, their curious glances flicking between the two. As a famous figure at the school, Victor naturally drew attention.
Victor stared at Bonnie for what felt like ages, making her uncomfortable. A chill ran down her spine. After a long moment, Victor suddenly bowed deeply in front of all the students in the hallway, his gesture surprising everyone.
The entire hallway fell silent, jaws dropping in disbelief. Even Bonnie was taken aback, stepping back a couple of paces, her eyes wide in surprise.
Victor lifted his head, his expression grave. “I’m sorry. Everything that happened yesterday was Winona’s fault. Please forgive the Carter family. I’ll do anything you ask, just please forgive us.”
Bonnie’s eyes widened, a look of horror flashing across her face. “Are you out of your mind?” she exclaimed. “Winona acted like a lunatic yesterday, causing trouble for me, and now you’re here apologizing to me? What kind of game are you two playing?”
Victor’s gaze darkened, his fists clenching at his sides. He stood there for a long moment, wrestling with himself, before finally speaking again. “I’m really sorry, Bonnie. Please forgive the Carter family. Should I kneel for you? Would that make you forgive us?”
Once again, the hallway went dead silent. The students stared, unable to believe what they were witnessing. Is this the same Victor? The once-invincible bully who ruled the school? they wondered. Is he really about to kneel to Bonnie?
Victor’s eyes locked on Bonnie’s, waiting for her response, as if she were the one in control of his fate.
