Adrian’s eyes narrowed at Eva’s words, the sting of her remark cutting through the air like a blade. Her innocence, the way she spoke with such calm and composure, made his irritation only grow. Her tone had been soft, almost detached, yet it hit him harder than any accusation.
“You really think you can make those kinds of remarks?” Adrian’s voice was low, a dangerous edge creeping in. “You’re the one who’s been putting on a show for everyone, pretending like everything is fine between us. Don’t turn this on me, Eva.”
Eva didn’t flinch. Instead, she took a step forward, her gaze unwavering as she locked eyes with him. “I’m not pretending, Adrian. I’ve never been more real than I am right now.” Her words were almost too calm, like a quiet storm waiting to break.
“You think you can still control this situation? That I’ll just bow down to your manipulation?” Adrian hissed, his patience wearing thin. He took a step closer, his presence looming over her.
Eva’s lips curled into a faint smile, but there was no warmth in it. “Manipulation? That’s rich coming from you. You know exactly how to twist things around to fit your narrative, don’t you?”
Adrian stopped, momentarily taken aback by her boldness. He wasn’t used to seeing Eva challenge him this way. She had always been composed, but this—this was different. This was a side of her he hadn’t seen before. He wanted to argue, to lash out, but he couldn’t find the words. Not when she was so… resolute.
Eva stepped back, breaking the tension in the air. “You don’t want me to spread rumors? Well, then maybe you should start looking at your own actions, Adrian. It’s not about me distancing myself from men, it’s about you needing to respect what’s left of this marriage.” Her eyes flashed with a mix of bitterness and resolve. “As for your little games, I won’t play anymore.”
Her words struck him like a punch, but he didn’t show it. Instead, he clenched his jaw, his eyes growing colder.
“Are you done?” he asked, his voice like ice.
Eva tilted her head slightly, her smile fading into something more neutral. “I think I’m just getting started.”
With that, she turned on her heel and walked away, leaving Adrian standing in the hallway, his mind swirling with thoughts of what had just transpired. He had never expected this from Eva—not this cold, calculated determination. It was like a mask had slipped, revealing a side of her he hadn’t prepared for.
As she disappeared around the corner, Adrian stayed rooted to the spot, staring at the place she had stood moments before. It was clear now. The games were over. Eva had made her decision.
And as much as he tried to convince himself otherwise, he couldn’t help but feel a flicker of uncertainty. Something had changed. And he wasn’t sure he could control it anymore.
