Eva had been acting strangely lately, and Adrian couldn’t shake the feeling that she was hiding something from him.
The servant turned pale at Adrian’s cold tone. “Mr. Blackwood, are you looking for that report?”
“I’m sorry, but the report has already been disposed of,” the servant said, voice shaky.
Adrian’s brows furrowed, his gaze hardening. “What did you say?”
The servant, clearly frightened by his grim demeanor, stammered, “I… I didn’t mean to dispose of it. But it was in such bad condition that I didn’t think much of it, and I just—”
Her words only deepened Adrian’s frown. Something’s off with Eva, he thought.
The butler, sensing the growing tension, interjected cautiously, “Mr. Blackwood, could Mrs. Blackwood be feeling unwell?”
Adrian handed him his coat and car keys. “I’m going upstairs.”
In the room, Eva was about to rest when her phone rang. It was the deputy secretary of the Hall Group, discussing a project that had been left unattended due to her absence the day before.
After hanging up, Eva frowned. The business matters were piling up. After just one day away, it seemed like she had no choice but to return to work today.
She opened her laptop, logged into her email, and began sifting through her messages. But then, she heard footsteps outside her door. Thinking it was just a servant, she ignored them and continued working.
It wasn’t until the footsteps stopped beside her, and a faint, fresh scent filled the air, that Eva realized something was off. She lifted her gaze and froze. Adrian stood in the doorway, his dark eyes locking onto hers.
Startled, she blurted, “What are you doing here?”
Adrian’s lips pressed into a tight line. “This is my room.”
Eva blinked in confusion. “Shouldn’t you be gone by now?”
“Do you mind me being in my own room?” Adrian replied smoothly, pausing before adding, “I was home last night.”
Eva’s surprise was evident, her eyes widening. Adrian’s gaze sharpened. “Surprised? You didn’t even know I was lying next to you last night?”
Eva bit her lip, avoiding his eyes. She hadn’t realized that the sensation she had felt during the night wasn’t an illusion. He had come back, but in her half-sleep, she’d thought he hadn’t returned. Now, hearing him confirm it, she felt a mix of emotions stirring within her.
“I thought you wouldn’t come back,” she said quietly.
Her words seemed to hang in the air, thick with unspoken tension.
Vivian had only been back for two days, and already, their relationship felt awkwardly distant.
After a long silence, Adrian suddenly spoke. “Why aren’t you taking your medicine?”
Eva continued to look at her computer screen, her fingers absentmindedly scrolling. “I didn’t want to take it yesterday, and today I feel much better, so I don’t need it.”
Adrian’s eyes flickered with something between suspicion and frustration. “Really? Then what about the report?”
At the mention of the report, Eva’s hand froze on the mouse. Her heart skipped a beat. The report…
Adrian had seen it.
Her mind raced as she tried to collect herself. After a brief pause, Eva raised her eyes to meet his, her expression a mix of confusion and feigned innocence.
“What report?”
Adrian said nothing at first, his gaze intense and piercing. She had responded too calmly, her eyes too steady—if Adrian hadn’t noticed her subtle reaction, he might have been fooled.
His gaze locked onto hers, sharp and unyielding. “I’m asking you, Eva. What report?”
Eva took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm. Initially, she had been shaken by the mention of the report, worried that he might have discovered her secret. But now, her composure returned. The report had been torn apart, soaked in rain—the writing was unreadable. Even if Adrian had found it, there was no way he could make out anything.
Adrian sat down in front of her, leaning forward, his presence looming over her. “Eva, do you think I don’t know you?”
Suddenly, he sneered, his tone mocking. “You’re lying. Do you think I can’t tell?”
Eva met his gaze, unflinching. “Really? You know me so well?” she asked, her voice tinged with sarcasm.
Without warning, Adrian’s hand shot out, gripping the back of her neck, and he leaned in, their foreheads almost touching. The heat of his breath mingled with hers in a moment of intimacy.
“We’ve known each other for over twenty years, shared a bed for two. If I don’t know you, then who does?” His voice was low and intense.
The atmosphere in the room grew charged with tension, and Eva found herself momentarily stunned.
“So, we’ve known each other that long,” she murmured, her voice barely audible. “You claim to know me, yet you never knew who I liked…”
She had loved him for so long, and he had never noticed. She had concealed her feelings carefully, but there were times when her affection had slipped through, despite her efforts to keep it hidden. Had he really never sensed it?
Adrian’s expression shifted, his face darkening as he heard her words. “The person you like?” he asked, his voice now filled with a new tension. “Who is it?”
