Vivian was taken aback when Eva rejected the money. She could sense a shift in Adrian’s attitude towards Eva—one she hadn’t anticipated. Adrian still didn’t know about Eva’s pregnancy, but Vivian couldn’t help but wonder how he would react if he found out. A nagging feeling twisted in her gut—if Adrian learned the truth, he wouldn’t let Eva go so easily.
For the moment, Vivian forced a smile. “Eva, are you worried about what others might say? You shouldn’t be. This money is from my personal funds, and no one else knows about it. I’m just looking out for you…”
“Ms. Morrison,” Eva sighed, trying to remain composed. “Thank you for your concern. My family may be bankrupt, but I’ve been working hard these past years. I can support myself and the…” She paused, and a faint smile tugged at her lips. “You’ve helped me a lot, but I can’t take your money.”
Vivian pressed on, her voice taking on a more insistent tone. “It’s fine. I’m giving it voluntarily.”
“Ms. Morrison, please take it back.” Eva’s expression hardened, her stance firm as she extended the envelope back to Vivian and took a step back.
Vivian froze as the weight of Eva’s words sank in. She had intended to keep the child.
The color drained from Vivian’s face, and her forced smile faltered as her eyes grew cold. “Are you serious about this?” she asked, voice tinged with disbelief.
Eva met her gaze, her own resolve unwavering. The reaction from Vivian didn’t alter her decision. She pressed her lips together and nodded. “Yes, I’m sorry, but I made up my mind before you came.”
Vivian’s disbelief turned into a scoff. “Why? I don’t see the point.”
Eva hesitated for a moment before responding, her tone calm yet firm. “Perhaps you don’t see any significance, but it’s my body, and the decision is mine to make.”
“You…” Vivian stumbled forward, her fingers tightening around Eva’s shoulders. “Maybe you should think it over, Eva. I’m not doubting you or targeting you, but you must understand the consequences of your decision.”
“I’ve thought it through,” Eva replied, her voice resolute.
Vivian’s grip loosened, and a sense of defeat washed over her. She turned away, leaving the small garden in haste, unable to hide her frustration.
Eva watched her leave, the envelope still clutched in her hand. After a moment of contemplation, she bent down to pick it up with a wry smile. Back in the living room, she was informed that Vivian had left.
Eva didn’t want the money, and since Vivian hadn’t taken it back, she decided to hand the check over to Adrian to deal with. As she ascended to her room, she let out a soft chuckle. A sense of relief filled her—her long-standing dilemma had been resolved. She had made up her mind to keep the child, and now a newfound peace settled within her.
She touched her belly lightly, a smile curving her lips. “Baby, Mommy will take good care of you,” she whispered.
Later that evening, as Eva packed her belongings and wondered if Adrian would return, the sound of the gate opening caught her attention. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw the headlights of his car.
It was the perfect moment for them to have a clear conversation.
She continued packing, though she hadn’t expected the process to take long. She didn’t own much—Eva had never been one for shopping. But as she packed, she realized how her life had subtly woven itself into the corners of the room: the wardrobe, the bed, the dressing table, the small items scattered around. She wasn’t just packing clothes anymore; she was packing up memories.
The sound of the door unlocking interrupted her thoughts. Adrian’s footsteps followed—slow, deliberate. When he entered the room, he stopped short, frowning at the scene before him.
Two light-colored suitcases sat near the bed, one already packed and the other almost done. Eva’s clothes were half-gone from the wardrobe. For a moment, Adrian wondered if she was preparing for a vacation. But then he realized the situation was more serious than that.
“What are you doing?” he asked, his voice sharp.
Eva, still facing away, extended an envelope to him from the wardrobe. Adrian didn’t take it immediately. “What is this?”
“It’s a check,” Eva said calmly.
“A check?” Adrian’s gaze hardened. “What do you mean?”
“It contains thirty million dollars from you and five million from Ms. Morrison.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed, confusion and frustration clear in his expression. “Why didn’t you spend it?”
Eva met his gaze without flinching. “It’s not about the money.”
He was silent for a moment, but then his eyes sharpened again. “Why did Vivian give you five million dollars?”
Eva wanted to ask why he had told Vivian about her pregnancy in the first place. After two years of marriage, why had he humiliated her like this?
But she held her tongue, her voice cold when she spoke. “I’ll move to the guest room upstairs tonight, and I’ll leave as soon as Grandma’s surgery is over and we sign the divorce agreement.”
