“You’re right,” Eva said. “The data they gave me has changed, which means my intuition was correct.”
Eva nodded, not offering any further explanation. She simply took the data back and stacked it neatly.
As she finished, something crossed her mind, and she turned to Adrian. “Actually, I think Granny is afraid of having surgery. You shouldn’t have told her the surgery would be moved up this afternoon.”
Adrian looked at her, surprised. “Really?”
“Yes,” Eva confirmed.
Adrian studied her serious expression and suddenly understood that her concern for Granny wasn’t just an act of rebellion. She genuinely cared for her, as if Granny were her own grandmother.
Realizing this, Adrian smiled slightly. “Okay, I understand now. I’ll make sure to comfort her later.”
The mention of Granny seemed to ease the tension between them for a moment, but once the conversation ended, silence fell once again.
The driver, who had been listening quietly from the front, couldn’t help but be surprised by their behavior. When they first got into the car, he thought they were on the verge of a heated argument, given the tension between them. But instead of fighting, they had calmly discussed Granny Blackwood’s condition.
He shook his head in confusion and decided to focus on driving. After all, he couldn’t make sense of their relationship dynamics.
When they arrived at The Blackwood Family estate, Eva exited the car first, walking up the stairs with purpose, neither rushing nor slowing down. Adrian followed her soon after, and they both entered the house without a word, heading upstairs together.
Since the wife had returned drenched from the rain that day, the atmosphere in the house seemed to have shifted. The servants worked with more caution, afraid that they might inadvertently become the target of their employers’ frustrations.
As soon as the couple had gone upstairs, the servants gathered in hushed tones to speculate about the state of their marriage.
“Look at how they’re acting. They must be getting a divorce soon,” one servant said.
“What are you talking about? They probably just had a fight. It’s not like they’re going to divorce over it,” another countered.
“Didn’t you hear? Mr. Blackwood only married his wife for show. He has someone else he likes now. If he doesn’t divorce her, how can he marry the person he truly loves?”
“That may be true, but after so many years of marriage, there has to be some love between them, right? I don’t think they’ll divorce.”
“I bet they will! If not this month, then definitely next month!” one of them insisted.
The group split into two factions, each passionately debating the couple’s future.
Meanwhile, Eva returned to her room and began preparing for bed. By now, her emotions had calmed down considerably, especially after reflecting during the ride home. Granny’s surgery was fast approaching, and Eva didn’t want any unnecessary conflict with Adrian at this time.
He had already stated that their marriage was a facade, and if a divorce was inevitable, then whatever happened between Vivian and him would simply be a normal part of the process. But what Eva couldn’t understand was why Adrian had told Vivian about her pregnancy. It was both confusing and frustrating. Vivian was someone Adrian cared for, so naturally, he would be open with her. But from Eva’s perspective, she couldn’t accept it, even though she understood why he did it.
Still, she had to remain calm during this time.
After finishing her wash, Eva emerged from the bathroom to find Adrian lying on the sofa, eyes closed. He had taken off his coat, looking tired. When he heard movement, he opened his eyes and met Eva’s gaze. She felt embarrassed and quickly looked away. Adrian, however, didn’t mind too much and casually asked if she had finished washing up.
“Yes,” Eva mumbled.
He nodded. “I’ll go wash up now.”
Half an hour later, Adrian walked out of the bathroom, towel in hand, drying his hair. But as he glanced toward the bed, he stopped in his tracks. Eva had fallen asleep, still holding the book she had been reading. She must have dozed off after only flipping through a few pages.
Adrian stood there for a moment, watching her in the soft light of the lamp. He was struck by how beautiful she looked, her cold, clear eyes, and how they seemed to warm with life when she smiled.
There was another side to her that captivated him even more — the way she looked at him with certain expressions that drove him wild.
Unable to resist, Adrian reached out, lightly touching the bridge of Eva’s nose, then moving his fingers down to her eyelids. The warmth from his touch spread through him, sending a jolt to his lower abdomen. His eyes darkened with emotion. But when Eva’s eyelids twitched, Adrian quickly withdrew his hand, trying to appear nonchalant.
Before he could move away, Eva’s eyes opened, meeting his gaze.
“What are you doing here?” she asked, confused, not noticing his earlier touch.
Adrian, now caught off guard, replied calmly, “Just checking if you were asleep.”
Eva realized that she must have fallen asleep during his wash-up time. She cleared her throat, embarrassed. “Maybe I was just too tired today.”
She closed her book and asked, “Have you finished washing up?”
“Uh-huh,” Adrian responded, his eyes still lingering on her.
Her demeanor had softened considerably since earlier in the day. After a moment of silence, Adrian couldn’t hold back and asked, “Are you not… angry with me?”
Eva, speaking almost at the same time, replied, “Adrian, let’s call a truce.”
He blinked, taken aback. “Truce?” He didn’t quite understand her meaning.
