Eva’s sharp gaze lingered on Jenny, who seemed suddenly more nervous than usual. The suspicion in her eyes deepened as she leaned slightly forward, her tone becoming more direct.
“Jenny,” Eva said softly, “Are you sure there’s nothing you’re hiding? You’ve been acting a bit… different today.”
Jenny shifted uncomfortably in her chair, trying to keep her composure but failing to hide the nervousness in her voice. “No, no, Eva sister, I promise there’s nothing wrong. I just wanted to take care of you. You’ve been working so hard lately, and I thought you’d appreciate a little break.”
Eva wasn’t entirely convinced, but she decided to let it slide—for now. She knew Jenny well enough to understand when something was off, but she also knew how stubborn the girl could be. If Jenny wasn’t ready to open up, then Eva wasn’t going to force it.
“Alright,” Eva said, her voice softening, “Thank you for the dessert. I appreciate it.”
Jenny smiled, but the unease didn’t entirely leave her face. As she sat back down at her desk, she kept glancing at Eva, her mind racing with the events of the past hour. She hadn’t expected to find out what she did today. The knowledge that Eva was carrying Adrian’s child—and that Adrian had no idea—was a heavy secret to bear. But what was more troubling was how Eva had been keeping this secret all along, especially with all the rumors swirling around them. Jenny couldn’t imagine how painful it must be for Eva, having to keep such a thing hidden from the man who should have known.
Meanwhile, outside the office, Brent was still stewing over his encounter with Adrian. He couldn’t shake the feeling that the conversation had been a close call. He’d pushed his luck too far, making light of Adrian’s relationships, but he couldn’t bring himself to feel guilty. Not when it came to Eva. Not when it seemed like Adrian, oblivious to everything, was making things even harder for her.
Brent knew he had to do something. He had to find a way to make sure Adrian understood what was really going on. But how? Every time he tried to bring up the subject, it was like he was talking to a wall. Adrian refused to see the truth, or worse, didn’t care to.
“Maybe I’ll just have to do something drastic,” Brent muttered to himself, an idea slowly forming in his mind.
Back in the office, Eva was starting to feel the weight of the day catching up to her. She hadn’t had the chance to fully rest, and the stress was beginning to take its toll. As she took a bite of the strawberry cake Jenny had brought, she couldn’t help but wonder just how much longer she could keep this up. How long could she keep hiding her pregnancy from Adrian? How long could she continue pretending everything was fine when she was carrying a secret that might tear everything apart?
For the first time in a while, Eva allowed herself to close her eyes and breathe deeply. The reality of her situation was overwhelming, but for a brief moment, she felt a strange sense of peace. At least for today, she could let herself rest, even if it was just for a little while.
Jenny, still at her desk, couldn’t help but feel the guilt gnawing at her. She knew she should be focusing on her work, but her thoughts kept drifting back to the secret she had uncovered. Would it be right to tell Eva the truth? Would it even help, or would it just make everything worse?
As the day wore on, Eva’s exhaustion only seemed to grow. Despite the warmth and kindness Jenny showed her, she couldn’t ignore the weight of her situation. Deep down, Eva knew she couldn’t keep hiding forever. The truth would eventually come out, one way or another. The only question was whether it would come out in time to save everything she had worked so hard to build—or whether it would tear it all apart.
