Eva’s heart skipped a beat as the car slowed to a stop in front of the Blackwood family mansion. She couldn’t take her eyes off the figure standing near the gate—the tall, slender woman in a white dress, speaking to the security personnel. The lights from the car illuminated her features, and everything clicked.
It was Vivian.
For a moment, Eva’s mind raced, and she instinctively glanced at Granny Blackwood beside her. Granny, who had been a little more at ease during the ride, now seemed tense. Her eyes flicked to the figure standing at the gate, and Eva saw her hand tighten on the armrest of her wheelchair.
“Who is that girl? She seems… quite familiar,” Granny Blackwood muttered, her voice low and slightly strained.
Eva swallowed hard. She could feel the tension building in the air. Adrian had remained quiet ever since the conversation with his mother earlier, but now, his demeanor shifted. He glanced at the rearview mirror, his jaw tightening as his gaze met Vivian’s.
“She’s… Vivian,” Adrian finally said, his voice carefully neutral.
Granny Blackwood’s eyebrows furrowed slightly at the name. “Vivian? Who is she?”
Eva could feel the discomfort in the air, and it wasn’t just from Granny. Her heart raced as she tried to process the sudden appearance of Vivian, especially after everything that had happened. What was she doing here? Was she waiting for Adrian? Or had she come here to stir things up again?
Before Eva could ask any more questions, Adrian spoke again, his tone clipped. “I’ll handle this.”
Eva glanced over at him, but he was already unbuckling his seatbelt and opening the car door.
“Adrian…” Eva’s voice was soft, laced with a hint of concern, but Adrian was already out of the car before she could finish.
The door shut with a soft click, leaving Eva and Granny Blackwood in the backseat. Eva felt a pang of uncertainty wash over her, but she quickly masked it. She glanced over at Granny, whose expression had shifted into something unreadable.
“Granny, don’t worry,” Eva said gently, her hand finding Granny Blackwood’s. “Everything will be fine.”
Granny Blackwood didn’t reply immediately, her gaze still fixed on the figure of Vivian at the gate, but she squeezed Eva’s hand in response, a small show of support.
Eva’s mind swirled with questions. What was Vivian doing here so late at night? Was she trying to disrupt things again? And how would Adrian handle this situation?
Just as these thoughts were running through her head, the car door opened again. Adrian stood there, his usual confident expression slightly tempered with frustration.
“Let’s go inside,” he said, his voice calm but firm.
Vivian’s presence still loomed in the background, but for now, Eva knew they had no choice but to push forward. She didn’t want to let Vivian’s sudden appearance ruin what had been a promising evening—bringing Granny back home, settling her into her new room, and finally getting some peace.
Adrian stepped back into the car, holding the door open for Eva, and without a word, she helped Granny Blackwood out of the vehicle and wheeled her up the steps toward the house.
As they entered, the familiar smell of the mansion filled the air. The soft lighting and the warmth of the house seemed to offer some comfort, but Eva couldn’t shake the feeling that things were far from resolved.
She glanced at Adrian once again, but he was already walking ahead, his back straight and his pace purposeful. Eva couldn’t help but wonder what had transpired between him and Vivian, and what the impact would be on their fragile situation.
“Everything okay?” Eva asked, catching up with Adrian as they moved through the foyer.
Adrian paused, briefly glancing at her over his shoulder. He was about to say something, but stopped himself, his expression unreadable. After a moment of silence, he replied, “It’s fine. I’ll talk to her tomorrow. But for tonight, let’s focus on getting Grandma settled.”
Eva nodded, though she couldn’t entirely shake the uneasy feeling that lingered between them. She could sense that there was more going on beneath the surface than Adrian was willing to let on.
As they guided Granny Blackwood inside, the servants moved quickly to help, offering tea and ensuring everything was in place. The house felt a little quieter, a little more still than it had earlier. But beneath the calm, Eva could feel the tension simmering, and she knew it wasn’t over yet.
Granny Blackwood was finally home, and Eva was determined to make her as comfortable as possible, but the storm with Vivian and the unresolved issues with Adrian loomed, leaving Eva with more questions than answers.
She only hoped that tonight, at least, they could have a peaceful evening.
