Emily propped her chin up, excitement radiating from her as she said, “Having a baby is so much fun, you know? If it’s a girl, you can dress her up every day, like a living dress-up doll. Have you played Love Nikki before? You can dress the characters up like that!”
Eva blinked, her expression frozen in surprise. She hadn’t expected Emily to think of it this way.
Emily’s enthusiasm didn’t wane. “Oh, and by the way, let me be the child’s godmother!” She rubbed her hands excitedly, a mischievous gleam in her eyes. “And don’t worry, I won’t just move in to play with the baby. I promise.”
Eva chuckled softly despite herself, realizing that Emily’s excitement went beyond just the baby. “You’re planning something, aren’t you?”
Emily’s grin widened, but then her tone shifted. “By the way, did Vivian contact you yesterday?”
Eva nodded, her expression turning more serious. “Yeah.”
Emily’s brows furrowed. “Damn, what did she say to you?”
Eva hesitated, then relayed the conversation from the previous day. Emily’s anger flared as she listened, her face scrunching in disbelief. “I can’t believe she had the audacity to give you money and act like she’s the original wife. Does she think she’s special? Isn’t she just Adrian’s girlfriend? Why is she even acting like she’s the main wife?”
Eva listened quietly, knowing Emily’s fiery rants were never short-lived. As always, once Emily started, she wouldn’t hold back.
When Emily finally finished venting, Eva handed her a tissue, offering a calm counterpoint. “This time, just let it go. Don’t mention her again.”
“What?” Emily’s eyes widened. “After everything she did to you, you’re still defending her?”
Eva’s gaze softened, but her voice was steady. “She helped me before.”
Emily blinked, confused. “Helped you? When?”
Eva lowered her gaze, her thoughts drifting back to a time she rarely spoke about.
The memory took Eva back to the time when the Hansen family went bankrupt. All her cards were frozen, and she was left with only a few thousand dollars in her WhatsApp account. Her father’s phone was constantly busy, and she rushed home in a panic.
When she arrived, chaos greeted her. A group of people was putting seals on their door, smearing paint, and confiscating their belongings. Her father had tried to stop them, but had been shoved violently, breaking his leg. Eva, furious, confronted the intruders, ready to call the police. In the commotion, her phone was knocked from her hand.
It was then that a phone call came in, and the attitude of the people changed instantly.
“Alright, I understand. We’ll leave now.”
The leader walked up to Eva, sneering as he spoke. “You’re lucky. We won’t take this house anymore. We’re leaving it for you. But if it weren’t for Miss Morrison knowing our boss, you wouldn’t have had this chance. This is for her.” The name Miss Morrison echoed in Eva’s mind.
“Vivian?” Eva asked, still in shock.
“That’s right. Consider yourselves lucky.”
Eva couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Vivian had helped her that day, when she had no idea how to protect her family.
After the situation had settled, Vivian had called Eva.
“Are you alright? Were you scared? I heard your uncle was injured. I’ve arranged a car to pick you up and take you to the hospital.”
Eva was stunned. “Why did you help me?”
Their relationship had never been close, and Eva had kept her distance ever since she learned of Vivian’s feelings for Adrian. But here was Vivian, offering her help without hesitation.
Vivian’s voice was light, almost casual. “Eva, you’re Adrian’s friend. Adrian’s friends are my friends, too. Of course I’ll help you. Don’t feel burdened by it. Just think of it as a favor from Adrian.”
Eva understood in that moment: Vivian was helping her not because she cared about Eva, but because of Adrian.
Now, as Eva sat beside her father in the car, she thought back on that moment. Mr. Hansen, ever observant, asked cautiously, “Eva, who was that on the phone?”
Eva paused, then answered quietly, “It was Vivian. She helped us, and I owe her a favor.”
Her father looked surprised, but then dismissed it with a wave of his hand. “Let’s get off the car, Eva.”
Eva held her father back, her voice gentle but firm. “No, Dad. Even if I get off now, I’ve already taken on this favor. If she hadn’t made that phone call, those people wouldn’t have left.”
Her father’s expression softened, but there was an underlying concern in his eyes. “But you and Adrian…”
Eva forced a smile, though it was faint and weary. “It’s alright. Maybe it’s just not meant to be.”
