Eva’s heart skipped a beat as Adrian’s words washed over her. The tender yet firm tone in his voice made her pulse race, and she instinctively swallowed. His touch, though brief, had left her feeling strangely unsettled, a mixture of warmth and unease swirling within her.
As she stood there, remembering that day, it was as if time had rewound itself. The memory of their first official moment as a married couple made her question everything, the emotions she had buried beneath layers of reason and logic now bubbling up to the surface. She remembered how awkward she had felt, how Adrian’s presence, though confident, had somehow managed to ease her nerves. She had never truly understood why, but now, faced with his cold yet commanding stare, she realized the depth of what she had always felt—a constant pull, something undeniable. But she also knew that the reality of their situation was far from that simple memory.
The memory of Adrian’s hand on hers, his finger tightening around hers as if it was second nature, contrasted sharply with the chill in the air now. That closeness, that gesture, had once meant something so clear, so comforting. But now, it felt like a trap, one that neither of them was fully willing to admit they had stepped into. The question of divorce hung heavily in the air, something that Eva had been trying to push aside. But Adrian’s response, his demand that they go to the Civil Affairs Bureau the next day, felt like the breaking point of something that was already fractured.
Eva gently traced the edge of the marriage certificate in her hand, feeling the weight of it—so much history in such a small piece of paper. The memories it held were both tender and painful, moments of closeness now overshadowed by the inevitable separation she could sense coming. Could they go back to that moment of simplicity, of happiness? Could they even have that again?
But there was no turning back now, was there? Adrian had already made his decision, and now, so had she. The tension in the room was palpable, and Eva knew that the next few days would change everything. The surgery, the divorce, the future—they were all intertwined in ways that were impossible to predict.
The sound of the bathroom door opening brought Eva back to the present. Adrian stepped out, his gaze still cold, though there was a flicker of something else there—something unreadable. He didn’t speak, but the silence was enough. Eva knew the gravity of the moment. Her thoughts, her feelings, and her entire future were now suspended in the air between them.
Without a word, she folded the marriage certificates carefully and placed them back in the safe. She turned towards the bathroom, but before she could take another step, Adrian’s voice rang out again, sharper than before.
“I want you to remember something, Eva.” His words hung heavily in the air, making her pause.
She turned slowly to face him, her heart still racing. “What?”
Adrian’s eyes were dark, unreadable. “Tomorrow isn’t just about Granny’s surgery. It’s about everything that comes after it. You’ve wanted the divorce, but we both know that’s not the whole story. Don’t forget that.”
Eva’s breath caught in her throat. She could hear the underlying meaning in his voice. The walls that had once seemed impenetrable between them were crumbling, and she wasn’t sure how to respond. Was he trying to test her? Or was there something more he wasn’t saying?
“I understand,” she said softly, the weight of his words pressing down on her chest. “But tomorrow… let’s just focus on Grandma.”
Adrian didn’t answer, but his gaze lingered on her, intense and searching. Finally, he turned away, walking toward the bed without another word.
Eva watched him go, her mind still racing. Tomorrow was a turning point—whether it was for better or for worse, she didn’t know. But one thing was certain: the life she had known was about to change forever.
