Eva’s blunt words made Vivian feel an immediate discomfort. “I didn’t mean it that way.”
Eva didn’t respond, uninterested in Vivian’s explanation.
Before leaving, Brian prescribed some medicine for her and spoke to Vivian, “Even though your friend is reluctant to take medicine, she should try to take it if possible.” The three of them left the clinic and headed back to the Blackwood residence.
As soon as the car door opened, Eva, enduring the discomfort in her body, stepped out. All she wanted was to go upstairs and rest.
However, as she stepped out, she stumbled, nearly falling forward, but Adrian, who had just exited, caught her just in time. His brow furrowed at her. “You’re in this state, and still refuse to take any medicine or get an injection. You really are stubborn.”
Vivian, who had followed them, saw their hands touch and quickly rushed over to support Eva. “Adrian, let me help.”
Vivian guided Eva inside, greeting the servants as they passed. The servants, noticing Vivian, couldn’t hide their surprise.
Once Vivian had escorted Eva upstairs, the servants gathered and whispered among themselves. “That looked like Ms. Morrison—the one Mr. Blackwood seems to like…”
“What? Isn’t Mr. Blackwood in love with Mrs. Blackwood?”
“Obviously, you don’t know. Ms. Morrison saved him. He’s been waiting for her all this time.”
“Is that true?” The group was about to continue, but a sudden cough interrupted them.
They turned to find the butler, who had appeared silently, standing sternly with his arms crossed. “Don’t you have work to do?”
The group dispersed like startled birds.
The butler, an older man with graying eyebrows, sighed in frustration. No wonder Mrs. Blackwood seemed so out of sorts last night.
Vivian helped Eva to her room.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” Vivian replied, smiling gently. “Rest well.”
“Alright.” Eva removed her shoes and lay down, noticing Adrian following them quietly.
“Shall I take you back?”
Vivian nodded. This was the Blackwood residence, and she had no reason to stay any longer.
“Alright.”
Before leaving, Vivian glanced around the room and spotted a bespoke men’s suit hanging on the coat rack outside. It could only belong to Adrian.
Her face paled slightly. She pressed her lips together, trying to hide her unease, and quietly followed Adrian out.
Once they were gone, Eva opened her eyes, staring up at the white ceiling, her mind swirling.
What should she do about the child?
Pregnancy was different from everything else.
She could hide her feelings for Adrian well—one year, two years, even ten years—but a pregnancy was something she couldn’t conceal. Eventually, her belly would show. She couldn’t hide that.
The more she thought, the dizzier she felt, and she drifted into a deep sleep.
In her sleep, Eva felt someone unbuttoning her collar, and a cold object was placed against her burning skin, bringing some comfort. She sighed and instinctively clung to the person’s arm.
She then heard a muffled groan and heavy breathing. A large hand gripped the back of her neck, and her lips were covered by someone else’s.
Something slid into her mouth, teasing her senses. She gasped softly in response.
Eva furrowed her brows, biting down on the object in her mouth, tasting blood, and the man gasped.
She was then pushed away, her cheeks pinched roughly. Through the haze of pain, she vaguely heard the person say, “You’ve really been spoiled, haven’t you?”
In a daze, she mumbled and pushed the person’s hand away, then fell back into a deep sleep.
When she woke again, it was nighttime. A servant was standing beside her, and upon noticing she had awakened, the servant rushed to her side with a joyful expression.
“Mrs. Blackwood, you’re awake.” The servant reached out to check her forehead. “Thank goodness, your fever has broken.”
Eva looked at the servant and, recalling some fragmented memories, asked, “Have you been taking care of me this whole time?” The servant quickly nodded.
Hearing this, a fleeting light of expectation dimmed in Eva’s eyes, and she lowered her gaze.
Those fragmented memories had led her to believe it was Adrian who had been by her side all this time.
But it wasn’t.
As she pondered, she noticed the servant bringing over a bowl of medicine.
“Mrs. Blackwood, you’ve just woken up, and the medicine is still warm. You should take it.”
The strong medicinal smell hit her, and she instinctively recoiled.
“Mrs. Blackwood, please drink it while it’s hot. It will get cold soon.”
Eva turned away. “Just leave it here. I’ll take it later.”
“But—”
“I’m a bit hungry. Can you go downstairs and bring me something to eat?”
“Alright, I’ll go get something right away. Please remember to take your medicine.”
Once the servant left, Eva carefully got out of bed, took the bowl of medicine, and went to the bathroom to pour it out.
Watching the dark liquid disappear, Eva let out a relieved breath. She couldn’t risk taking medicine while pregnant.
As she stood with the bowl in hand and turned around, she froze in shock. Adrian was standing in the bathroom doorway, his sharp gaze fixed on her with curiosity.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
Eva’s heart skipped a beat, and panic flashed in her eyes.
Adrian took a few steps forward, grabbed her wrist, and pushed her gently against the wall, his expression serious as he examined her.
“Recently, you’ve been acting strangely. Why won’t you take injections or drink the medicine?”
“I don’t want to. Is that a problem?” Eva met his gaze, forcing herself to remain calm.
She couldn’t let him know she was pregnant—not yet. If he found out, she couldn’t even begin to imagine the consequences.
But Adrian seemed to have noticed her odd behavior.
“Eva,” he began softly, “yesterday at the club, when you waited for me, was there something you wanted to tell me?” He lifted her chin gently, his eyes searching hers. “You didn’t seem like yourself.”
Eva’s mind raced. Yesterday, she had just found out she was pregnant and had hoped to surprise Adrian—but then Vivian had returned…
She clenched her lips tightly, cold sweat trickling down her back.
Should she tell Adrian about the pregnancy?
