Eva’s heart was in turmoil. Adrian was the father of her child; he deserved to know about its existence. But the thought of telling him filled her with dread. She was terrified that if she revealed the truth, he would coldly demand she terminate the pregnancy. These past few days, she had been plagued by dreams, and the vivid scenes had left her in a cold sweat.
“Since yesterday, you’ve been acting strange,” Adrian said with a sigh. “You’re sick, but you won’t take medicine or get an injection.” He paused, his gaze softening slightly. “If something’s wrong, you can tell me.”
Eva was lost in thought, searching for a way to respond, when a servant entered, bringing her food. It provided a convenient excuse for her to move away from the topic.
Since Eva was still unwell, the servant had prepared light, easily digestible food for her. Eva had little appetite, only picking at the food before setting the bowl aside. The servant quickly approached to clean up, while Adrian stood silently, watching her every move. His lips were pressed into a thin line, his eyes narrowed in concern.
He couldn’t shake the feeling that something was terribly off with Eva. The more he thought about it, the more restless he became. Feeling a sudden lack of ventilation in the room, he turned to leave. Before bed, the servant brought yet another bowl of medicine.
“I don’t want to drink it. Don’t bring me any more medicine in the future,” Eva said firmly.
The servant blinked in confusion, but Eva didn’t elaborate as she waved the servant out of the room.
Adrian did not return.
The bedroom remained eerily quiet, with only Eva alone in it. He didn’t come back… Eva lay back, her eyes closing as a single thought filled her mind. If I had been the one to save him back then, would we be in this situation now? Would we be on the verge of divorce?
But… there were no “what-ifs.”
Eva fell into a deep, restless sleep, but in the middle of the night, she vaguely felt the bed dip. Had Adrian returned? But before she could fully grasp the moment, sleep overtook her again.
The next morning, as she turned in bed, her first instinct was to reach for the spot beside her. It was cold.
Eva pressed her lips together, the light in her eyes dimming with disappointment.
Early the next morning, a servant brought breakfast along with another bowl of medicine.
Eva had just finished washing up when the strong scent of the medicine reached her. She frowned.
“Mrs. Blackwood, this medicine…”
Unable to bear it any longer, Eva spoke firmly, “I told you I don’t want this medicine. Why is it here again?”
The sudden harshness in her voice left the servant momentarily stunned. Realizing she had lost her temper, Eva quickly composed herself, rubbing her temples. “I’m sorry, I’m not feeling well. Please take it away.”
The servant, flustered, nodded and left the room, taking the medicine downstairs.
Back in the kitchen, the butler saw the untouched bowl of medicine being brought back, his brow furrowing. “Mrs. Blackwood still won’t take the medicine?”
The servant nodded and recounted what had happened. The butler listened, then added sternly, “You know how well Mrs. Blackwood usually treats you. She’s probably just in a bad mood because she’s sick. Don’t take it personally.”
The servant flushed at the reprimand and quickly shook her head, but before she could respond, a cold voice interrupted.
“She still won’t take the medicine?”
The butler and the servant turned, startled to find Adrian standing in the doorway. His expression was as serious as ever, holding his suit and car keys. He had already had breakfast and was preparing to leave for the company when he noticed the bowl of medicine left untouched.
The butler nodded. “Yes, Mr. Blackwood.”
Then, as though remembering something, the butler asked, “Mr. Blackwood, what is the purpose of this medicine?”
“It’s to reduce fever,” Adrian replied curtly.
The butler sighed in relief. So it’s just fever medicine… He had been worried that something more serious had befallen Mrs. Blackwood. But fever medicine was a common remedy, and not a cause for alarm.
However, the servant seemed startled and blurted out, “So it’s just fever medicine? I thought it might be… something else…”
Before she could finish her sentence, both the butler and Adrian turned their gaze toward her, a look of suspicion forming on their faces.
“What do you mean?” Adrian asked sharply.
His intuition kicked in—he was always perceptive—and he could sense that the servant’s unfinished sentence might reveal something significant.
“Explain yourself,” he commanded coldly.
Startled by Adrian’s piercing gaze, the servant lowered her head, her voice barely a whisper. “I… I’m not really sure. But when I was cleaning the bathroom trash can yesterday, I saw what looked like a hospital report. It was torn into pieces, and it seemed to have been soaked by rain, but I noticed the word ‘report’ while I was cleaning.”
Adrian’s expression darkened, his eyes narrowing as he absorbed this information.
“What report?” he asked, his voice tight with urgency.
The servant shook her head. “I’m not sure. It was too damaged to read fully, but I saw the word ‘report’ as I picked up the pieces.”
Adrian’s gaze sharpened, his instincts telling him that this report might hold the key to Eva’s secret.
“Where is the report?” he demanded.
