Chapter_96
“Mr. Chavez, we have solid information,” Emmett began, his voice low and steady. “Caleb will be attending the emerald auction in three days with Bradley. It’s been five years since he last appeared at these events, and after the recent dismantling of his human trafficking network, he’s suffered significant losses. He has no choice but to attend the auction and try to make a large profit to cover those losses.”
Caleb was a formidable opponent, a dominant force in the Golden Triangle for many years. The local government largely ignored his actions, even offering him protection. They worked closely together, with Kransbay serving as Caleb’s base of operations. His influence was vast, making it nearly impossible to gather evidence against him. This left Jeremiah’s secret forces with very little to work with, adding to Emmett’s growing concern.
Jeremiah stood, walking over to the window. The view of the busy city below was bright and full of life, but he knew the darkness that lurked beneath. The city, with its crime, theft, and arson, was filled with danger around every corner.
He turned from the window and spoke with an air of cold determination. “Be prepared. Caleb’s reckless actions against Clusia have consequences. We cannot allow troublemakers to act with impunity. Those who violate our land must be punished.” The final words came out like an icy warning, sending a chill down Emmett’s spine.
Emmett nodded, fully understanding Jeremiah’s intent. When they discovered Caleb was the mastermind behind the international human trafficking network, Emmett had already considered him sentenced to death.
“Mr. Chavez, I’ll have everything ready for the emerald auction in three days. If there’s nothing else, I’ll take my leave now,” Emmett said.
Jeremiah gave a decisive wave of his hand, signaling the conversation was over.
Emmett bowed respectfully before turning to leave. As he reached the elevator, he encountered Eagle King, who was returning with supper. Their eyes met as they passed each other, and both slowed down, instinctively sizing each other up. Emmett sensed the powerful internal energy emanating from Eagle King and noted the intense combat potential in the man.
Eagle King paused, sensing Emmett’s presence as well. The two stood still for a moment, their internal energies colliding in a silent, yet fierce, confrontation. Just then, a cleaning lady emerged from a room down the hallway, oblivious to the tension between the two men.
“Do you need anything, gentlemen?” she asked in her Uprian accent.
Eagle King withdrew his energy with a small nod. “Nothing,” he replied. He then turned to Emmett, a slight challenge in his tone. “There’s no winner or loser this time. Let’s have another match later.”
Emmett, a hint of respect in his eyes, responded, “Sure.”
As Eagle King departed, Emmett took a step back, still feeling the aftereffects of their silent battle. He had only held his ground through sheer willpower. If the confrontation had lasted even a few more minutes, he knew he would have been in serious trouble. That expert must be here for the emerald auction, Emmett thought uneasily. I can’t help but wonder if he’ll mess up Boss’ plans. This trip to Kransbay is shaping up to be more complicated than I expected.
Back in the hotel suite, Yvette sat on the couch, her eyes glued to her phone as she researched Caleb. In less than ten minutes, she had pieced together everything there was to know about him.
“He killed his father as a child and took over the Kerton Group when he was only twelve or thirteen?” she mused aloud. “In ten years, he’s expanded his influence through drug dealing, human trafficking, running casinos, supplying weapons to African terrorists, and money laundering with the help of the government. And now, he’s attending the emerald auction? It’s shocking. He’s committed every crime imaginable.”
Yvette’s findings went even deeper, revealing things Emmett had missed—details about Caleb’s mistress living in a mansion north of Kransbay and Bradley’s desire to overthrow his father.
As Eagle King entered the room, he noticed Yvette completely absorbed in her research. “Boss, it’s time to eat. I figured you might not like the food here, so I bought some dishes from a nearby Clusian restaurant,” he said, setting a spread of food on the table.
The table was soon covered with risotto, pasta, donuts, pizza, duck confit, muffins, and more. The restaurant owner had been surprised when Eagle King ordered so much food for just two people, but Eagle King knew Yvette’s appetite well. When she was well-fed, her mood was significantly improved.
Yvette picked up her fork and began eating slowly, savoring each bite. Thirty minutes later, every dish on the table had been devoured.
After Eagle King tidied up the remains, he sat down on the other side of the couch. He pulled out two white envelopes from his pocket, each containing an invitation to the upcoming Emerald Auction. The invitations were divided into three levels: regular, gold, and diamond—the highest tier. The invitation in Eagle King’s hand was the diamond level, which cost a hefty 500 million Manchernius dollars.
Yvette took out her map, marking three locations with a pen. “I’ve identified three places where Caleb might be hiding people. Flying Fish could be at one of them. To avoid alerting them, we’ll need to keep a watch on these locations for the next three days. If Caleb goes to the auction, he’ll likely have heavy security. If I go to the emerald auction, you should use that opportunity to rescue Flying Fish and meet me afterward.”
Eagle King was impressed by how quickly Yvette had found all of Caleb’s hiding places. With her by his side, he felt like nothing was out of reach. But something still puzzled him. “Boss, since you know where Flying Fish is being held, why go to the auction at all? Can’t we just rescue her and leave, or do you have something else in mind?”
Yvette paused, then lazily glanced at him. After a moment’s thought, she responded, “Since we’re already here, why leave those people around?”
Eagle King nodded in agreement, his own thoughts aligning with hers. Caleb should face serious consequences for messing with my people. I’ll get Boss and Flying Fish out of here, then go back and deal with Caleb. It’s too dangerous to leave him alive.
Meanwhile, Caleb was having a very different kind of night at his mansion. He had no idea that, as the leader of one of the most powerful crime families in the Golden Triangle, he was considered expendable by others.
In the basement of his luxurious northern Kransbay mansion, a woman in a red dress was locked up—none other than Flying Fish herself.
Flying Fish tugged at her dress in frustration, cursing her own carelessness. Damn it! My mistake got me captured by Caleb’s men. He tricked me using a child. How infuriating!
A week had passed since her capture, and she could smell the stench of her confinement. If Eagle King rescues me, I’ll destroy this place, she thought with venom. I won’t let my reputation as the third-best assassin go to waste!
