The basketball court was a frenzy of noise. The crowd was buzzing, completely thrown off by the unexpected turn of events. The chatter became louder, voices overlapping.
“Yo, it’s really lively in here,” Yvette exclaimed, walking through the chaos, and the once-quiet court was now full of excitement.
“Whoa, who is that? She’s gorgeous!” someone in the crowd gasped.
“Seriously, pinch me. Am I dreaming?”
“No, I see her too!” came the reply.
“Check the forum. That’s got to be her!” someone else added.
Victor’s eyes widened as he noticed Yvette walking toward him. He assumed she was heading straight for him to show off. But to his surprise, she didn’t even glance his way. Instead, she walked right past him, heading straight toward John, who was still sitting on the ground.
John, through blurry vision, thought he saw an “angel” standing before him. He blinked, trying to make sense of it, and heard a soft voice say, “Get up.”
But John didn’t move. He just stared at her, frozen in a daze.
Yvette frowned slightly when she saw him still on the floor. “Are you waiting for me to drag you up?”
John quickly shook his head, trying to push himself up, but Tobias rushed over to help him stand, barely managing to keep him upright.
“Thanks, but you should go. Otherwise, you’ll get in trouble with Victor and his crew,” John warned, genuinely concerned for Yvette.
“Is he a threat?” Yvette asked casually, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
The crowd fell silent once again, murmurs spreading as students pulled out their phones to check the forum. Was this the hot new girl everyone had been talking about?
Victor’s face darkened, and his voice took on a menacing tone. “I suggest you mind your own business, beautiful.”
Yvette turned around, a playful smirk spreading across her face. “What’s the problem? I actually love getting involved in other people’s business.”
The crowd gasped. Who was this daring new girl? Did she not know who Victor was? The son of the powerful Carter family? Did she have a death wish?
“Do you know who I am?” Victor pressed, sure that Yvette wouldn’t act so boldly if she knew his status.
Yvette tilted her head, eyes flashing with defiance. “Nope, I don’t.”
Victor’s expression darkened, his ego bruised by her lack of fear.
The crowd was stunned. Who was this girl, and how could she dare talk to Victor like that?
Meanwhile, Tobias, still trying to help John stay upright, glanced at Yvette. When he heard her words, his jaw dropped. “Should I call someone? I don’t know if I should just stand by and let my student be bullied…”
Before Tobias could decide, a voice interrupted. “Why are you here, Yvette?” It was Winona, cutting through the tension.
The girl with the lantern jaw next to Winona gasped, eyes widening. “What? That’s your sister?”
“What?” another voice asked, clearly shocked. “This is Winona’s half-sister?”
“Wait, what’s her name again?”
“Yvette!”
The whispers exploded. “No way! The gorgeous new girl is Winona’s half-sister?”
“Didn’t they say she was from the countryside? She doesn’t look like it!”
“She must have inherited the good genes, that’s for sure.”
Someone else chimed in, “Did you guys forget that Victor was supposed to marry Yvette, not Winona?”
The rumors were spreading fast. It was like a live soap opera unfolding before their eyes.
Victor’s mind was spinning. He had been planning to confront Yvette, but now everything had changed. “This is the daughter the Chambers family just discovered? My fiancée?” He turned to Yvette, disbelief written all over his face.
Winona, sensing an opportunity, stepped forward, her body language softening. She leaned into Victor and tugged at his sleeve. “Victor, don’t be mad. Yvette didn’t mean it.” She turned to Yvette, but something in her gaze faltered, and she hesitated. “About what happened with Mom… she’s already forgiven you. Can you come home with me today and apologize? Please don’t make her sad again.”
Victor, still angry but admiring Winona’s softer side, felt conflicted. He could see Winona was vulnerable, and the idea of her being upset only fueled his anger. “Hey, Yvette, you better apologize to Winona and Mrs. Chambers right now. Otherwise, don’t blame me for being harsh.” He then added with a sneer, “And as for our engagement? It’s over. Winona is my fiancée now, so don’t get any funny ideas.”
Yvette remained calm, her expression casual yet laced with a sharp edge. “You two are a perfect match. A b**** and a… well, you know. You two should definitely stick together.”
Her words stung, and even though she said it seriously, her meaning wasn’t lost on anyone.
Winona’s eyes immediately filled with tears. “How could Yvette humiliate me like this in front of everyone?” she whispered to herself, hurt and angry.
Victor had planned to be lenient, but now, humiliated by Yvette’s words, he wasn’t holding back. “Grab Yvette! I’ll pay 150 grand. Strip her down and let’s see who the real b**** is!”
The crowd gasped at Victor’s cruel proposal. Winona’s tears stopped, and she silently hoped Yvette would be publicly humiliated. That way, Yvette would have no choice but to leave Argrol University and never show her face again.
Victor’s lackeys, eager to please, grinned. It seemed like an easy way to make quick money. After all, who wouldn’t want to get involved with a beautiful girl, especially one with the Chambers family’s backing?
“Victor, maybe this isn’t such a great idea,” Winona said, pretending to be concerned. “Look at Winona—so kind and loyal! Yvette doesn’t stand a chance.”
Victor looked at Winona, feeling a rush of affection for her. “You’re too good, Winona. But just stay away from this. I’ll teach her a lesson about who not to mess with.”
Winona hesitated. “But my dad…” she started, but Victor cut her off.
“I’ll handle him. Our families have been friends for years,” Victor said confidently. “She disrespected Nellie, and now I’ll show her a lesson in respect.”
Victor shot a quick look at the girls around Winona, signaling them to pull her aside. Winona’s worry was still evident, but she reluctantly allowed herself to be led away.
One of the girls with a lantern jaw glared at Yvette, who stood unbothered, clearly natural in her beauty. Unlike Winona, she hadn’t gone through the expensive cosmetic procedures to enhance her looks. It only fueled the other girl’s jealousy.
The crowd had witnessed an unbelievable spectacle. Victor, the powerful son of the Carter family, was about to teach someone a lesson. But no one stepped in to stop it.
A couple of guys with less-than-noble intentions moved in on Yvette, grinning as they neared her.
But Yvette stood her ground, her sharp features cold and filled with disdain. It was clear from her posture she wasn’t intimidated.
Seeing Yvette still standing there unfazed, Tobias figured she might be too stunned to react. He was about to call someone for backup when suddenly, a commanding voice rang out.
