Chapter_58
Zachary stood in the lobby of the police station, his anxiety growing as he was left to stew in the tension between him and Daniel. The way Daniel had dismissed him earlier—walking right past him without a word—only added to his frustration. Despite his position as head of the Chambers family, Daniel’s cold indifference felt like an insult. But it was Yvette who weighed most heavily on his mind.
He couldn’t fathom how his daughter had gotten herself into this mess. From the rumors about the 100 million dollar bet at Sky Nimbus to the whispers about her role in the Sullivan family’s downfall, Zachary’s mind was spinning. He had always thought of Yvette as a prodigy of sorts, someone who had hidden talents and potential beyond anyone’s expectations. But this—her sudden appearance in the police station and the accusations against her—was something else entirely.
Lucas’s words echoed in his mind, especially the part about Yvette’s connection to Ethan’s hospitalization. The idea that she had caused the distress that led to Ethan being in the hospital made Zachary uneasy. He didn’t want to believe it, but with Daniel’s backing, it seemed undeniable. Still, he couldn’t stand by and let his daughter be treated this way, especially when her reputation—his reputation—was on the line.
Before he could think further, Lachlan emerged from the interrogation room, his hands tucked into his pockets as he stepped outside for a smoke. Zachary immediately seized the opportunity to make his case. The moment Lachlan glanced his way, Lucas moved quickly to speak on Zachary’s behalf. “Hello, sir. Yvette is the Chambers family’s eldest daughter. Could you please inform us how we can arrange her bail? We’re willing to cooperate with any follow-up,” Lucas said, trying to maintain a professional tone.
Lachlan gave Lucas a cursory glance before his eyes shifted to Zachary, recognizing the man as one of Seacrity’s most influential figures—the head of the Chambers family. His eyes widened with slight surprise as he processed the information. Yvette’s connection to Zachary made things even more complicated.
“Mr. Zachary Chambers,” Lachlan said, somewhat nervously, “I’m surprised to see you here. But as a low-ranked officer, I can’t decide on this. You may want to call Chief Jonathan Quigley yourself.”
Before Zachary could respond, a booming voice filled the lobby, cutting through the tension like a knife. “Bail? Yvette hurt Ethan, and you still want to talk about bail?” Daniel’s furious tone left no room for doubt about his anger.
Zachary turned quickly, his heart racing as he tried to put a face to the voice. Daniel Brooks appeared, storming into the station, his expression one of barely-contained rage. Daniel walked straight past Zachary, his gaze deliberately avoiding him. The snub was more than obvious. It was a clear message: Daniel wasn’t interested in speaking to him, at least not until Zachary did something to make amends.
Zachary felt the sting of the dismissal but held his ground. His pride urged him to retaliate, but he suppressed it and moved forward cautiously, trying to salvage the situation. He stepped in front of Daniel, forcing a smile as he attempted to explain, “Mr. Brooks, it seems there’s been a misunderstanding. Yvette didn’t know who Ethan was, or she would never have harmed him. I’ll cover all of his hospital expenses, and I’ll ensure that Yvette personally apologizes to him. Can we settle this privately?”
Daniel’s response was cold, dismissive. “Mr. Chambers, it’s easy for you to say that, but Ethan is still in the hospital. Do you really think my family needs your money? The Brooks family has more than enough to cover his medical bills. But what I’m concerned about is your daughter’s behavior. Yesterday, at Sky Nimbus, Yvette made a massive 100 million dollar bet.”
Zachary’s face stiffened. “100 million dollars?” he repeated, as if in disbelief. The number seemed too large to associate with his daughter.
Daniel sneered, his gaze sharp. “She’s your daughter, isn’t she? What kind of father would allow his daughter to gamble away that kind of money? And don’t give me that ‘misunderstanding’ story. Yvette knew who Ethan was at the casino, and yet she wasn’t intimidated. I’m starting to wonder if the Chambers family thinks they can do whatever they want.”
Zachary’s mind raced. He had heard the rumors about the 100 million dollar bet at Sky Nimbus, but he never imagined Yvette would be the one behind it. His thoughts were interrupted by a sharp realization. The rumor that the Sullivan family had gone bankrupt because of Yvette started to make sense. The same Yvette who had won the Frixyia competition, who had kept her winnings a secret from him.
If Yvette had 100 million dollars to gamble, where had she gotten it from? Zachary thought back to the mansion he had transferred to her, the one she had yet to move into. She had left the Chambers residence with nothing but a black backpack and the Heart of Lorry—a gift from him—lying on her table. There was no way she had turned that mansion into cash so quickly. That meant she had come up with the money herself.
Zachary was both impressed and confused. “What has Yvette been up to all these years? What secrets is she hiding?” he wondered aloud.
Daniel’s voice broke his thoughts. “Enough talk. Where is she?” he demanded, his frustration palpable.
Lachlan, who had been standing by silently, didn’t hesitate. “Follow me. We’ve got Yvette locked up in the isolation room.”
Zachary’s heart dropped. “An isolation room? Why?” he asked, his voice sharp with concern.
“It’s protocol for cases like this,” Lachlan replied, though the discomfort in his voice suggested he wasn’t entirely happy with the arrangement.
Zachary’s worry intensified. He was determined to see his daughter, but Daniel’s refusal to let him do so privately indicated that things were far from simple. He demanded, “As Yvette’s family, I have the right to see my daughter, don’t I?”
Daniel’s gaze was unyielding as he replied, “Of course. But you’ll have to wait. As the victim’s family member and Seacrity’s deputy mayor, it’s my duty to question her personally.”
Zachary clenched his fists. He knew Daniel’s actions were not just about justice; they were about sending a message.
