Chapter_73
Yulia’s heart skipped a beat as she spotted Yvette walking down the hallway. Her figure was unmistakable—tall, poised, and exuding a quiet confidence that made her stand out in any crowd. Yulia’s palms began to sweat as she took in the sight of the young woman who was the center of so many complications in her life.
Yvette didn’t seem to notice Yulia at first, her eyes focused ahead, lost in her own thoughts. But as Yulia stepped forward, a subtle shift in her posture caught Yvette’s attention. Her gaze flickered briefly to Yulia, and for a moment, their eyes locked.
“Can I help you?” Yvette’s voice was calm, almost too calm, like someone who had grown used to dealing with interruptions.
Yulia hesitated, suddenly feeling the weight of her task. The letter in her purse felt like it had grown heavier, a tangible symbol of the pressure Robert had put on her. She swallowed hard, trying to steady her nerves. “Yvette… I’m… I’m here on behalf of Robert Carter. He… he wants you to end the engagement with Victor.”
Yvette raised an eyebrow, her expression unreadable. “What engagement?” she asked, her tone flat, as though the subject held no significance to her.
Yulia flinched, knowing this wasn’t going to be easy. She reached into her purse and pulled out the letter, handing it over. “It’s an engagement contract that was made years ago. Robert wants it dissolved. He… he doesn’t want you to marry Victor. He’s already made arrangements for Victor to propose to someone else.”
Yvette took the letter from Yulia’s hand, glancing at it briefly before folding it in half and slipping it into her pocket without another word. She turned to walk away, clearly uninterested in the matter. But Yulia, desperate, stepped forward.
“Yvette, please. This is important. If you just sign it, everything can be settled,” Yulia said, her voice trembling slightly.
Yvette paused, her back still turned, and a wry smile tugged at her lips. “You want me to sign this, just like that? After everything? After your husband has made so many decisions for me without ever asking what I want?”
Yulia opened her mouth to respond, but no words came. She had no defense for Robert’s actions—she knew that. But she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being pushed into a corner, that if she didn’t handle this situation perfectly, things would spiral out of control.
Yvette turned back to face her, her expression colder now, her eyes narrowing slightly. “Tell Robert that I don’t need his permission for anything. If Victor wants to marry someone else, then let him. But don’t bring this to me again. I’m not part of his games.”
Yulia stood there, her mouth dry as she processed Yvette’s words. For a moment, she felt the full weight of the situation. The pressure from Robert, the expectations from her family, and the realization that Yvette was untouchable in ways she could never fully understand.
“I’ll tell him,” Yulia said finally, her voice quiet, defeated. She turned to leave, but just before she walked away, Yvette’s voice stopped her.
“Tell him one more thing,” Yvette said, her tone icy. “If he ever tries to control my life again, there will be consequences. Not just for him, but for everyone who thinks they can make decisions for me.”
Yulia nodded quickly, unable to look Yvette in the eye as she walked away, the weight of the engagement letter still hanging between them like an unspoken threat.
As Yulia left the university campus, Yvette’s words lingered in her mind, a constant reminder of the tension between them. She had tried to fulfill Robert’s request, but now she was caught in a web of emotions she couldn’t untangle. Her loyalty to her husband, her fear of his anger, and the undeniable power that Yvette had over the situation—all of it was too much to bear.
Back at the Carter residence, Robert was pacing restlessly in his study, his temper flaring as he awaited word from Yulia. He had no patience for delays, and every passing minute only increased his anxiety. When Yulia finally returned, the look on her face confirmed that things had not gone as planned.
“She refused,” Yulia said quietly, placing the engagement letter on the table before him.
Robert’s face hardened, his anger flaring as he grabbed the letter and crumpled it in his fist. “Of course, she did. That girl has no respect for anyone. She thinks she can just do whatever she wants.”
Yulia flinched at the venom in his voice but stayed silent, knowing there was nothing she could say to calm him now.
Robert threw the crumpled letter aside, pacing again. “This isn’t over. I’ll deal with her myself. I’ll make sure she understands her place, once and for all.”
Yulia didn’t respond, feeling a pit grow in her stomach. She knew all too well what Robert was capable of when his temper flared, and she feared that Yvette’s refusal would only make things worse for everyone involved.
Meanwhile, at the university, Yvette was back in her physics lab, her mind drifting between calculations and the lingering conversation with Yulia. She couldn’t shake the feeling that the situation with the Carters was far from over, and the more she pushed back, the more they would come after her. But she wasn’t about to back down—not now, not ever.
Simon had been right; she had been playing this game for years. And now, it seemed, the stakes were higher than ever. But Yvette wasn’t someone who folded under pressure. If they wanted to make her a pawn, they were going to have to work a lot harder than that.
