Chapter_45
Yvette’s indifference left Zachary heartbroken. He truly didn’t know how to handle this daughter of his.
Zachary rubbed his head, feeling frustrated. Yvette was ready to walk away when he quickly called out, “Come home, Yvette. I was just angry and—”
The hair on Yvette’s forehead hung down as her brow furrowed slightly, a hint of impatience in her cold and firm demeanor. “No need. The dorm is fine.”
Zachary steadied himself, his tone tired. “Yvette, if you don’t want to return to the Chambers family, you can stay at the mansion I’ve given you. It’s…”
He paused, lost in memories. He and Lilian had shared their happiest moments in that mansion. But since she left without a word, he rarely went there, afraid it would stir emotions he had buried.
Yvette looked up, noticing the sadness in Zachary’s eyes, but it only annoyed her. To her, it was too late for affection now. “If you’re done talking, I’m leaving.”
Her words pulled Zachary back from his thoughts. “That was the place where your mother and I used to live. I’ll have Lucas bring you the keys tomorrow.”
Yvette didn’t respond and turned to leave.
After she was gone, Zachary instructed Lucas to find out what Yvette had ordered, thinking she was dining with her classmates and wanting to cover her bill.
Ten minutes later, Lucas returned, looking shocked and hesitant to speak.
Sensing something was off, Zachary asked, “What’s the matter? Did you pay Yvette’s bill?”
Lucas hesitated, struggling to find the right words. “Mr. Chambers, I asked the front desk where Miss Yvette was sitting, and they said she was in the VIP Room.”
Zachary was taken aback. The VIP Room?
Few knew that the steakhouse was owned by Wyatt Langford. Zachary had only discovered its connection to Wyatt after seeing his wife managing the place and conducting a thorough investigation.
His thoughts raced. “We weren’t even able to book the VIP Room since it’s reserved for special guests. How did Yvette get access?”
Lucas’s next words stunned him. “Mr. Chambers, by the time I arrived, someone had already paid her bill.”
Zachary asked, “Who?”
Lucas took a deep breath and replied, “Sir, it was Wyatt.”
Momentarily confused, Zachary asked again, “Who?”
Lucas confirmed, “Sir, it was Wyatt Langford.”
Zachary’s eyes widened as he looked at Lucas, whose expression confirmed the shocking truth.
“How did Yvette get involved with Wyatt?” In an instant, Zachary’s mind spiraled into worst-case scenarios, struggling to comprehend their connection.
Fury surged within him. “My daughter is only twenty years old, and Wyatt is much older than she is. This is unacceptable!”
Lucas had initially thought the same but quickly reconsidered. Knowing Yvette’s character, he doubted she would ever compromise her pride in such a manner.
Seeing Zachary clutch his chest in distress, Lucas quickly pulled out the medicine he had prepared and handed it to him.
After taking the medicine, Zachary felt slightly better but still spoke weakly. “Bring Yvette back. I need to speak with her. If she’s done anything that disrespects the Chambers family, I won’t forgive her.”
Lucas felt Zachary was overreacting. He thought, “The relationship between Mr. Chambers and Ms. Zeller is already strained. If he keeps making accusations without understanding the situation, their bond may never recover.”
“Mr. Chambers, I don’t think Ms. Zeller would do something like that. I suggest you wait. There might be a misunderstanding.”
Zachary looked displeased but couldn’t shake his concerns. He pulled out his phone and called Yvette.
Meanwhile, Yvette returned to the private room to find that Tobias and the others had left, leaving only Jeremiah, who watched her intently. His dark eyes gleamed, his skin was pale, and his voice was husky. “You’re back,” he murmured.
Yvette nodded slightly. “Where are Bon and the others?”
Jeremiah replied, “Andrew gave your friend a ride home, and Mr. Sunderland left with that guy from your class.”
“Andrew?” Yvette frowned.
Jeremiah sensed her concern and reassured her, “No need to worry. Andrew talks a lot, but he won’t do anything. Your friend is perfectly safe.”
Yvette looked at him, puzzled. “Safe? That’s not what I meant. I’m worried… for Andrew.”
Jeremiah didn’t quite understand.
Yvette sighed. “Bonnie mentioned she tends to act up when she drinks. We just had steak, and I saw her secretly having a few glasses. The wine you ordered is strong, so now…”
Yvette didn’t need to finish. Jeremiah understood.
Jeremiah stood up, his posture straight and composed. He picked up his coat from the chair and wrapped it around Yvette’s shoulders.
She looked up at him, slightly puzzled, as Jeremiah leaned in. Their eyes met.
“Let’s go. Andrew knows what to do. No need to worry,” Jeremiah said.
Yvette glanced sideways at him but said nothing.
Inside the Jeep, Jeremiah drove while Yvette sat in the passenger seat, texting someone.
“How’s your driving?” Jeremiah asked.
Yvette put away her phone. Her voice, slightly hoarse from the meal, sounded particularly pleasant. “Not bad.”
Jeremiah nodded. “Compared to your Frixyia?”
Yvette thought for a moment. “I can’t compare. I don’t really know Frixyia.”
Jeremiah glanced at her. Noticing her thoughtful response, he knew she was being honest.
He mused, “Yvette’s language skills are advanced enough for her to work as a translator, yet she says she doesn’t really know it. She’s truly intriguing.”
After that, Jeremiah focused on driving while Yvette closed her eyes to rest.
As they approached Argrol University, a unique piano ringtone suddenly filled the car.
Yvette glanced at the caller ID and hung up. The phone rang again persistently. Annoyed, she eventually turned it off.
When Zachary called again, he was met with a message stating the phone was turned off. Furious, he threw his phone onto the desk.
After dropping Yvette off at Argrol University, Jeremiah went to meet Simon. No one knew what they discussed, but the next day, Jeremiah was introduced as a substitute teacher in the physics department.
Early in the morning, Bonnie arrived in class with dark circles under her eyes. As usual, she found Yvette lying on her desk, asleep.
Around them, students whispered about what had happened in the auditorium the previous day.
Rumors about Yvette and Sharon spread like wildfire at Argrol University.
Some said Yvette had been too harsh, using outside influence to pressure Sharon unfairly. Others supported her, saying she had done the right thing.
The forums were buzzing, but in reality, no one dared to confront Yvette after witnessing Sharon’s downfall.
That morning, Sharon officially withdrew from school. She didn’t stay a minute longer after completing the paperwork.
Bonnie sat next to Yvette and turned to glare at the students who were gossiping.
The room fell silent instantly. It wasn’t Bonnie they feared—it was the fact that Yvette had her back.
