Chapter_107
The next morning, Jeremiah brought breakfast to Yvette’s room and knocked on her door. He waited for a while, but there was no answer. Just as he was about to take out his phone, he heard a familiar voice behind him.
“Looking for me?” Yvette asked, her voice soft yet unmistakable.
Jeremiah paused, his phone still in his hand. He slid it back into his pocket, then turned around. Yvette stood before him, dressed in a white tracksuit, her damp bangs framing her face. Her ponytail swayed with her every movement, adding an air of youthful energy to her presence.
Jeremiah was momentarily taken aback. It was the first time he had seen her like this—fresh, relaxed, and free from the usual tension she carried. He quickly masked his surprise, pressing his lips together as he lifted the breakfast bag. “Yes, I brought you breakfast.”
“Come in,” Yvette said, her tone casual as she opened the door.
Jeremiah followed her inside. As soon as the door clicked shut, he reached out and grabbed Yvette’s wrist, instinctively holding her in place. Yvette, equally swift, gripped his hand in return. The two stood there for a moment, neither willing to release the other, the silence between them thick with unspoken words.
Jeremiah looked down at their intertwined hands, while Yvette glanced up, their gazes meeting. The tension between them was palpable. After a beat, Jeremiah slowly let go of her wrist, his voice carrying a hint of concern. “You didn’t sleep well?”
Yvette also pulled her hand back, raising an eyebrow as she replied, “I didn’t get much sleep.”
Jeremiah’s lips pressed together in thought, but he let the topic drop. He turned toward the small table and began setting down the breakfast items. “The flight this afternoon is a little after 3 p.m. Do you need to pack anything?”
Yvette shook her head, taking a bite of the food. She mumbled through her mouthful, “No need. I’ve only got one bag. I’m ready to go anytime.”
Jeremiah glanced at the worn black backpack sitting by the couch, then returned his gaze to her. “Okay then. We’ll head out directly.”
Yvette picked up the newspaper the hotel had delivered that morning. The rushed edition bore a headline that read: [Gang Leader Caleb Kerton and His Son Bradley Found Dead in Their Mansion. Both Died a Gruesome Death.]
The story was all over Kransbay. Caleb and his son Bradley, the heads of the largest local gang, had been found dead in their home. The article detailed the shockwaves caused by their deaths and the chaos unfolding within their criminal empire. Their closest associates had been wiped out, and without a clear heir to take Caleb’s place, the power vacuum had already begun to stir conflict. Caleb’s many illegitimate children were demanding their share, while outside families began to move in on the territory.
Even government officials with ties to the Kerton family were now on edge, worried about the repercussions of their involvement.
At 3 p.m., they boarded the plane as scheduled. During the flight, Yvette fell asleep beside Jeremiah. He noticed her peaceful expression and quietly draped his jacket over her, careful not to disturb her.
Half-awake, Yvette glanced at him, a brief smile curving her lips. “Thank you.”
Jeremiah smiled back, his voice soft with affection. “You’re welcome. Sleep. I’ll wake you when we land.” He watched her settle back into her seat, her warm breath lightly brushing his arm. A strange sensation spread through him. He leaned closer, his eyes filled with a mix of emotions, before returning to his book.
Behind them, Emmett observed the interaction, letting out a soft sigh. It seemed that Jeremiah had truly fallen for Yvette. Since he had chosen her, she was destined to become the future lady of the Chavez family. But Emmett couldn’t help but wonder: would she be able to handle such a responsibility?
He already imagined the challenges Yvette would face in the future in Betrico. After all, how could the daughter of a small family from a second-tier city be worthy of the commander’s grandson, the sole heir of the Chavez family?
The road ahead would be difficult, but if Jeremiah was determined, with the old commander’s support, no one would be able to stop him. Yet, the future remained uncertain.
After a four-hour flight, they landed in Seacrity. A car was waiting to pick them up at the airport.
“Let’s take you back to the university first,” Jeremiah suggested. Since the moment they had arrived at the airport, he had been carrying Yvette’s black backpack, offering her a quiet, unspoken support.
Yvette nodded in acknowledgment but said nothing, her expression calm as she cleared her throat. “Okay, thank you.”
When they arrived at the entrance of Argrol University, Yvette got out of the car first and waved to Jeremiah, who stayed behind in the vehicle. He rolled down the window, nodding as she walked away. “See you tomorrow.”
“Okay,” Yvette replied, as terse as ever. She slung her backpack over her shoulder, walking into the campus. Aside from her striking beauty, she seemed like any ordinary student.
It wasn’t until Yvette disappeared from view that Jeremiah instructed Emmett to drive away. Barely ten minutes later, the campus forum exploded with activity. Someone had secretly snapped a photo of Yvette walking across the campus, and the comments section quickly filled with admiration.
[Has our campus belle returned? Wow! She’s still as stunning as ever.]
[After winning the piano competition, she just disappeared. She keeps too low a profile. We finally get to see her again.]
[With Yvette back, I have a strong feeling our campus is about to get lively again.]
[The commenter above, stop pretending. You only said that because you know Winona’s apprenticeship ceremony is in two days, right?]
[Oh yeah, I almost forgot! Sunday is Winona’s apprenticeship ceremony and Yvette’s welcome-back party. Too bad we can’t attend and see it in person. What a shame.]
[I saw it in the entertainment news too. No idea why the Chambers family would schedule both events on the same day. It’s like they’re asking for drama! Feels like there’s going to be a showdown between the sisters.]
[Honestly, I think so too.]
[I’m sad. I wanna watch.]
[Y’all are shameless! But you know what? Same here! Haha.]
Yvette pushed open the door to her dorm room. The quiet greeted her, and Bonnie wasn’t around. She set down her backpack and headed straight for the shower. When she came out, Bonnie walked in, looking surprised to see her.
Bonnie squealed and lunged at her, wrapping Yvette in a tight hug. “Yve, you’re finally back! I’ve missed you so much! I’ve lost three pounds!”
Yvette playfully pulled Bonnie off her and hung up her towel. She then took a good look at her friend. “Yeah, you’ve definitely lost weight. Should I get revenge and beat up Andrew for you?”
Bonnie’s eyes went wide, and she flinched, clearly unsure if Yvette was serious. Then she caught the teasing glint in Yvette’s eyes and realized it was all in jest. She breathed a sigh of relief, shaking her head. “Just kidding. You seem to care about Andrew a lot, huh?”
Bonnie blushed and quickly shook her head again, but it was clear she was flustered. Yvette’s playful comment had thrown her off balance.
