Chapter_111
Zachary’s chest tightened, the weight of Yvette’s dismissive words causing an unexpected wave of frustration. This daughter of mine is infuriating, he thought, his anger simmering beneath the surface.
Meanwhile, Lucas stood quietly in the corner, wishing he could shrink into a tiny gnome. Ms. Zeller is so brave, he thought, glancing nervously at Zachary. Can’t she see that Mr. Chambers’ head is practically steaming with anger?
Lucas also found himself wondering why Zachary had suddenly made a will—especially calling Yvette there alone without Nellie, Winona, or Zeke. The entire situation seemed off, but as always, Lucas kept his thoughts to himself. Sometimes, he figured, ignorance is bliss.
Zachary took a slow sip of his coffee to calm himself. His expression darkened, and he sighed, trying to suppress his growing frustration.
“Yvette, I know you’re still angry at me for kicking you out and forcing you to live in the dorms,” Zachary began, his voice low. “Let’s put that behind us. I had my reasons. I won’t pressure you if you don’t want to return to the family. This will… it’s a token of my affection for you. Can you please, at least, look at it?”
His voice was filled with something close to pleading—he had lowered his pride, practically begging for her acknowledgment. Even Lucas, who had seen Zachary’s often unyielding persona, felt a pang of sympathy. How much must Zachary care about her to act like this?
But Yvette’s gaze remained cold. Her brow furrowed slightly, but she didn’t show any sign of being moved by his words.
Zachary’s shoulders slumped, his face sinking with disappointment. Is it still not enough? She doesn’t care about the inheritance, either… Just how much does she hate me?
“Give me the document,” Yvette said, her voice almost bored.
Zachary’s head snapped up, and for the first time, his eyes lit with hope. “H-Here.” His hands shook slightly as he passed the papers to her. “Take your time, Yvette. There’s no rush. No rush at all…”
He watched, almost entranced, as Yvette casually skimmed through the pages. He even refilled her coffee cup while she read, the whole time hovering just behind her with a nervous, almost hopeful air.
Lucas, standing off to the side, couldn’t suppress a disbelieving thought. Is this really the same man who rules the business world? He’s completely devoted to his daughter.
Yvette, however, wasn’t paying attention to anything but the document in her hands. She flipped through it at a rapid pace, spending no more than 30 seconds on each page. In just five or six minutes, she finished reading the 20 pages.
She set the document down, and Zachary, who had been watching intently, couldn’t hide his shock. The coffee he had poured was still warm.
“Yvette, you’ve finished already?” he asked, his voice filled with disbelief. “Do you want to look again? There are additional clauses…”
Yvette cut him off. “No need. I’m done.”
Zachary blinked, astonished. How can anyone read so quickly? He hadn’t expected her to be so efficient. He stared at her, wondering how she had managed to absorb all that information in such a short time. What kind of extraordinary daughter did Lilian and I create?
Still, he couldn’t help but feel a touch of unease as Yvette placed the will down, her expression completely neutral. What does this mean? Is she dissatisfied with what I’ve given her?
Zachary’s mind raced. I left her 60% of my shares, the mansion, my antique collection, and a trust fund… He almost couldn’t believe it himself. What more does she want?
Finally, after a long pause, he spoke again, his voice growing quieter, almost vulnerable. “These are all I have. There’s really nothing else. They’re all yours when I’m gone one day.”
Lucas stood frozen, unable to hide his astonishment. I can’t believe it. The will essentially makes Yvette the future heir of the Chambers family.
The weight of Zachary’s words hung in the air, as if everything had changed in that one moment.
