Chapter_121
The atmosphere in the private room was heavy, filled only by the silence that stretched on after Zachary decisively left with Yvette. Winona, maintaining her composure, managed to convince Richard to return to his room, though he made one last, chilling remark before he left.
“I’ll make sure Yvette pays for this,” Richard muttered, his voice tinged with a dangerous promise.
The words hung in the air like an unspoken threat. No one dared to respond. Nellie, her face twisted in a mix of rage and something darker, seemed barely able to contain her fury. It was as if her emotions could consume her whole, but she held them back, seething quietly.
Meanwhile, in the car on the way back to the Chambers residence, Yvette sat with her head low, eyes closed, her posture relaxed as if she had fallen asleep. Zachary, glancing at her periodically, tried to give her the space she needed. Despite his silence, his mind was anything but still. How will she survive in this world? he wondered. She’s so stubborn. Who will protect her once I’m gone?
The thought drifted back to Jeremiah—the man who had appeared at the police station. Zachary couldn’t help but wonder if someone from Jeremiah’s influential background would be interested in Yvette. He wasn’t naive; he knew that powerful families in Betrico placed immense value on social status, and any potential suitor for Yvette would likely have to meet their lofty expectations.
The more Zachary considered it, the more troubled he became. He sighed softly, the weight of his worries pressing down on him.
Yvette stirred slightly, her eyes fluttering open. She turned toward Zachary, her gaze clear and unclouded, as if she had sensed his distraction.
“Why are you sighing?” she asked, her voice calm and almost playful.
Startled, Zachary quickly masked his thoughts. “Oh, you’re awake,” he said, his tone slightly embarrassed. He had been lost in his thoughts and hadn’t noticed her stir.
Yvette raised an eyebrow and prodded, “Why are you sighing?”
Zachary hesitated for a moment, then cleared his throat. “Um… Yvette, are you interested in that Major General who showed up at the police station the other day?”
The question caught Yvette off guard, and her confusion was evident. “Why mention him?” she asked, a hint of curiosity in her voice.
Zachary scrutinized her carefully. He noticed there was no unusual reaction when he mentioned Jeremiah’s name. Perhaps, he thought, he was just overthinking it. Maybe Yvette didn’t care about the man at all. That thought was a small relief to him, but it also made him feel somewhat foolish for even worrying about it.
“Never mind,” he chuckled, shaking his head. “I was just curious. Don’t take it to heart.”
Yvette didn’t respond immediately. Instead, she closed her eyes again, leaning back against the seat. There was a momentary silence between them as Zachary drove, each lost in their own thoughts.
When they arrived at the Chambers residence, Lucas was already waiting at the door, visibly anxious. His worry lines deepened when he saw them pull up. He had sensed that something was off the moment he woke up. His attempts to reach Fabian had failed, and after asking around, he discovered that Yvette hadn’t returned. Panic surged through him as he wondered what had happened to her.
Before he could contact Zachary, he received a message, calming his nerves. It confirmed that Yvette was safe and at the Exoir Hotel. However, Lucas still couldn’t shake the feeling that something was amiss. He was about to rush over to bring Yvette back when a surprise visitor arrived, forcing him to stay and entertain the guest.
As Lucas hurried to greet Zachary and Yvette, he mentioned, “Mr. Chambers, Ms. Zeller, you’re back. The person delivering the dress has arrived and is waiting for you, Ms. Zeller.”
Zachary nodded, a smile flickering on his face. “Let’s go, Yvette. Let’s check out the dress the Sterling family made for you. They say Sienna only makes five dresses a year. I wasn’t sure she’d take the job, but surprisingly, she agreed as soon as I told her who it was for. We didn’t even discuss the price.”
Yvette paused, raising an eyebrow. “Sienna?”
Zachary had heard numerous times how difficult it was to persuade Sienna to make a dress. From what he had gathered, she was notorious for her high standards and reluctance to work with just anyone. He wasn’t particularly familiar with the fashion world, but he knew that her reputation preceded her.
“I thought it was all rumors,” Zachary continued. “I spoke with her on the phone, and she seemed pleasant enough.”
Lucas, who had been standing quietly nearby, hesitated before whispering something into Zachary’s ear. At that moment, Zachary’s expression shifted, a hint of confusion crossing his face.
“Sienna came personally?” he asked, raising his voice slightly. “She’s in the living room right now?”
Lucas nodded. “Yes, Mr. Chambers. She’s been waiting for you for half an hour now.”
Zachary’s eyes widened. Half an hour? he thought. She’s been waiting for that long?
That was highly unusual, even for someone as influential as Sienna. He couldn’t help but feel a little guilty for the delay. It was impolite not to have greeted her sooner.
He quickly entered the room, momentarily forgetting that Yvette was behind him. She followed him at her usual leisurely pace, her composure unshaken.
In the living room, a young woman sat in the middle of the room, looking completely at ease. She wore hot pants and a tank top, with long purple hair cascading down to her waist. Her flashy pink earrings and two-inch heels made her stand out immediately. She was sipping coffee, looking around the room with curiosity.
Despite her casual appearance, there was an undeniable energy about her. Zachary couldn’t help but be surprised—she didn’t seem impatient at all. In fact, she seemed excited, almost eager to see what the Chambers residence had to offer.
However, when she saw Zachary, her excitement seemed to falter slightly. She didn’t get up to greet him, a clear sign of her disappointment. Zachary was taken aback by the sudden shift in her demeanor.
But the moment her eyes landed on Yvette, her expression brightened. She stood up quickly, walking toward Yvette with an eager grin on her face. Zachary, thinking she was coming to greet him, stepped forward to meet her—but to his surprise, she bypassed him completely and went straight to Yvette.
Without missing a beat, she reached out as though to embrace Yvette, but the gesture was swiftly stopped by Yvette, who raised a hand to block her.
“I dare you to take another step,” Yvette said coldly, her voice laced with warning.
Sienna froze, a look of wounded disappointment crossing her face. She stared at Yvette, her eyes tinged with accusation, as though she were shocked by Yvette’s coldness.
Yvette, on the other hand, didn’t even acknowledge the look. She turned and walked over to the couch, sitting down with a casual air, leaving both Zachary and Lucas standing awkwardly by the door.
