Chapter_110
“Mom, I just saw Lucas pick up Yvette. I think she’s going to meet Dad. Do you know what this is about?” Winona asked, a hint of unease in her voice. Though Lucas picking up Yvette didn’t seem like a big deal, something about it made Winona feel unsettled.
When Nellie heard that Lucas had gone to pick up Yvette, her expression changed. Since the piano competition a few days ago, she had heard from Zeke that Yvette had, for some unknown reason, taken a leave of absence and hadn’t returned to university.
Zachary had been occupied with a foreign bidding project and hadn’t been home much, so Nellie had no idea why Lucas was involved with Yvette.
“Winona, you don’t need to worry about this,” Nellie said, her tone trying to sound reassuring. “I’ll find out what your father wants with Yvette. Right now, your main focus should be the apprenticeship ceremony in two days. Don’t let anything distract you. I’ll handle this. Yvette won’t be a problem. I’ve already come up with a plan to deal with her. By Sunday, she’ll be a laughingstock among the wealthy families in Seacrity,” Nellie added with confidence.
Hearing that, Winona felt much more at ease. Lately, Nellie had been treating her like a prized possession, pampering her more than she ever did with Zeke. It had been the most comfortable time of her life in the past few days.
After hanging up, Winona stared at her phone, standing in a corner with a satisfied smile on her face. It wasn’t her who was plotting against Yvette—it was her mother, so Winona could remain blissfully detached from it all.
At the hotel, after ending the call, Nellie stood still, her expression turning cold and calculating. Blake, growing impatient, grabbed her from behind and pulled her onto the bed. Nellie complied, and the two engaged in another round of passion.
Once things settled, Blake reached for a cigarette at the bedside, lighting it. Nellie, still in his embrace, slipped out of it and took the cigarette from his hand, taking a few puffs. She glanced at Blake, her thoughts drifting. He’s definitely getting old, less capable compared to the young guy I’ve been fooling around with recently. If it weren’t for Blake’s connections, I would’ve kicked him to the curb by now.
She didn’t let her thoughts show on her face, though. With a smooth handoff, she returned the cigarette to Blake, who continued smoking without complaint.
“The task I gave you—has it been done?” Nellie asked coolly. “This time, don’t mess it up. Make sure your men stay alert. You know what I’m capable of if you fail again.”
Blake, remembering the last failure with the investigation of Yvette, nodded. He was aware that Yvette’s background was an enigma, making it hard to dig up useful information. “Don’t worry. Nothing will go wrong this time. The men arrive tomorrow. I’ll get them settled and wait for your call on Sunday. Then, I’ll send them over.”
Nellie’s expression softened when she heard that. She smiled faintly. “Good. Be ready. On Sunday, I want Yvette to be utterly ruined.”
Blake smiled in return, his loyalty unwavering. He knew exactly what Nellie was capable of, and if she wanted someone gone, he would provide the means to make it happen. They shared a brief, lingering cuddle before Nellie got dressed and left for Chambers Group.
At Chambers Group, Lucas escorted Yvette to the private elevator, one that led directly to the top floor, reserved exclusively for Zachary. The receptionists and a few employees watched, gossiping excitedly. It was the first time they’d seen a woman other than Nellie use that elevator. Curiosity was rampant.
One particularly nosy employee speculated aloud that Yvette might be Zachary’s long-lost daughter. She shared her guess with the others, and the shock rippled through the office. After all, it was well-known that the Chambers family didn’t have a good relationship with Yvette.
Of course, rumors were rumors, and not worth much. For years, employees at Chambers Group had seen only Nellie on rare occasions. They rarely saw any other members of the Chambers family, aside from the occasional appearances of Zachary’s children in the media.
The employees were all aware of the upcoming banquet where Winona would formally become the apprentice of the president of the Art Association. But this newly discovered daughter was able to enter Chambers Group and be escorted personally by the chairman’s butler? That was significant, even if it seemed normal to the lower-level employees. The senior employees, though, were more perceptive and began to wonder what it meant.
In Zachary’s office, he sat with a frown, exhaustion etched into his face. He’d been poring over the same document for two hours. Finally, with a sigh, he signed his name, making the document legally binding.
Knock knock!
“Mr. Chambers, I’ve brought Ms. Zeller over,” Lucas’s voice echoed from the door.
Zachary immediately stood up, excitement lighting his face. He hadn’t expected Yvette to arrive so soon, and though he tried to hide it, his voice betrayed a hint of eagerness as he said, “Come in.”
Lucas opened the door and gestured for Yvette to enter first. She strolled in with an air of casual confidence, her hands tucked in her pockets. From Zachary’s vantage point, he couldn’t help but notice her striking profile. Her long, curled eyelashes caught the light, and for a brief moment, he was struck by how much she resembled Lilian.
“Yvette, you’re here,” Zachary greeted warmly, though his words held an edge of curiosity.
Yvette nodded briefly and then casually took a seat on the couch, crossing her legs. She glanced at Zachary, who stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows in his sharp suit, smiling at her. Her tone was as indifferent as ever. “What’s up?”
Zachary paused for a moment, collecting his thoughts, before walking over to the couch with the document he had just signed. Lucas, ever observant, poured coffee for the two of them and stepped aside, bowing his head.
Sitting down opposite Yvette, Zachary handed her the document. His gaze never left her face as he said sincerely, “Take a look at this document. If there are no issues, I’ll have my lawyer process it.”
Yvette picked up the document and quickly glanced at it. Realizing it was a will, she was slightly taken aback, but she didn’t even bother to read it before tossing it back onto the table.
“This is my will. Why are you acting like it’s trash?” Zachary thought, frustration creeping into his mind. He hadn’t expected Yvette to be so disinterested. She wasn’t living as poorly as he had assumed, and Chambers Group wasn’t small change. Isn’t she even the slightest bit tempted?
Yvette casually pulled out a piece of vanilla toffee, popped it into her mouth, and savored it before speaking with a hint of sarcasm, “Are you dying? Why make a will now?”
