Chapter_142
The weight of Zachary’s words seemed to press down on the entire room, and the silence that followed was almost suffocating. Nellie, completely shattered by the revelation, collapsed onto the stage, her body trembling, her mind a whirlpool of anger and disbelief. Her eyes, once filled with affection and longing for Zachary, now blazed with hate and insanity. The love she had once felt for him had turned into something far darker—a mixture of regret, humiliation, and rage.
The crowd watched in stunned silence, their gazes flickering between Zachary and Nellie, unsure how to react to this public unraveling of a once powerful family. They saw Nellie stagger backward with each cruel word from Zachary, until she had no ground left to stand on and finally crumpled to the floor. The scene was tragic, surreal—like something out of a dark drama.
In the midst of this, the Smith family’s butler, Jason, entered with a few bodyguards. His presence seemed almost like a lifeline to Zeke, who had been standing there, struggling to process what was happening to his family. Jason, with his calm and efficient demeanor, walked onto the stage without hesitation. He glanced at Zeke for a moment, giving him a brief, meaningful look that told him to stand down.
“Take Nellie, Zeke, and Winona away first,” Jason instructed the bodyguards, his voice low and authoritative. Zeke’s face tightened, but he didn’t protest. His mind was too disoriented to think clearly. Nellie, looking back at Zachary one last time, seemed torn between fury and grief, but the bodyguards gently guided her away from the stage.
Jason stood there for a moment, facing Zachary, his expression calm as always. “Mr. Chambers, Mr. Smith has received the divorce agreement, along with the necessary documents. The agreement will be signed and delivered to the Chambers family tomorrow. It will officially end the relationship between the Smith and Chambers families.”
Zachary, unfazed, nodded as Jason continued, his tone carrying a hidden weight, “Mr. Smith asked me to pass on a word: Life is unpredictable. Be careful when you go out in the future. I hope you remain healthy and watch how the Chambers family declines under your leadership.”
Jason left without another word, leaving a stunned silence in his wake. His words hung in the air like a threat, an omen of the financial storm that was likely to follow. The crowd slowly began to disperse, their minds buzzing with the scandal they had just witnessed. It had been a night of revelations and betrayals, one that would undoubtedly make headlines the next day. The Smith and Chambers families—two of Seacrity’s most powerful names—had just severed ties. Everyone knew that turmoil was coming. The business world would never be the same.
Later, in the quiet of the villa, Lucas returned after seeing off the last of the guests. He found Zachary sitting alone on the sofa, looking exhausted, his face drawn with the weight of everything that had just transpired. Lucas had seen a lot in his years of service to Zachary, but nothing like this. He had spent years working under him, and now, all at once, it felt like the ground was shifting beneath them.
Zachary had been planning for this moment for years. He had carefully orchestrated the events that led to this night, but now, as the reality of the Smith family’s retaliation loomed on the horizon, the future seemed uncertain. The Chambers family, once a titan of industry, was no longer as invincible as it had been. The Smith family’s revenge could be devastating, and with the loss of so many allies, Zachary was left to wonder if they could weather the storm.
Lucas approached Zachary with caution, bowing respectfully. “Mr. Chambers, all the guests have left, and so have Ms. Chambers and her friends.”
Zachary rubbed his temples, clearly drained. He muttered, “Okay. Bring the documents on the table to Yvette’s school tomorrow. I’ve completed all the necessary procedures at the law firm. After today, Yvette owns Chambers Group.”
Lucas’ heart skipped a beat. There was something off about Zachary’s tone, something final in the way he spoke. As if he was preparing for the end of an era. But before he could ask, a voice, familiar and defiant, interrupted his thoughts.
“Why don’t you ask if I even want Chambers Group?”
Both Zachary and Lucas turned toward the door, startled to hear Yvette’s voice. She stood there, leaning casually against the door frame, dressed in her usual sportswear, looking every bit as unbothered as always. Her mischievous smile tugged at the corners of her lips as she walked in, her demeanor cold and composed.
“I don’t want Chambers Group,” she said simply, her voice flat, as though the company didn’t even matter.
Zachary stared at her, a mix of surprise and something akin to admiration in his eyes. Yvette was so different from the girl he had once known—so much more confident, sharp, and independent. The realization hit him like a ton of bricks. His daughter, whom he had always thought of as distant, had grown into someone who didn’t need the family’s wealth or legacy. She was her own person, and she had been for a long time.
He sighed softly, a complex mix of emotions crossing his face. He had never expected this from Yvette. After all, she had shown no interest in the family business, and yet her actions over the past few months—gambling 100 million dollars, revealing herself as Cyanbird, and then reuniting with the Chambers family—had all been part of a larger plan that Zachary had only now begun to understand.
Zachary’s voice was tinged with a hint of melancholy. “Did you deliberately let me find you? Reuniting with the Chambers family was also part of your plan, wasn’t it?”
Yvette didn’t deny it, simply playing with the empty coffee cup in her hand, her gaze steady and unreadable. Zachary’s eyes softened slightly. Despite everything, he felt a strange sense of pride. His daughter was clever, ambitious, and strong—a far cry from the naïve girl he had once imagined.
“You don’t need to worry about Chambers Group,” Yvette finally spoke, her words cutting through his thoughts. “It won’t go bankrupt. You don’t need to worry about that.”
Zachary furrowed his brow. “What do you mean? The business war with the Smith family will be fierce. Even if you’re Cyanbird, running a company worth over 3 billion dollars isn’t easy. If the Smiths target us, it’s going to be a fight to the end. Bankruptcy is inevitable.”
Yvette’s gaze shifted downward, and she seemed to consider his words for a moment before responding. “Business war? It’s quite interesting,” she said, her voice flat.
Zachary didn’t push further. There was no point in trying to convince her. He knew his daughter wasn’t like the others. She had her own way of dealing with things, her own plans. And if the Chambers family fell, so be it. As long as Yvette was alright, that was all that mattered to him.
“You’ll be fine,” Zachary murmured to himself, though he couldn’t shake the feeling that everything he had worked for was now slipping through his fingers.
Yvette, looking entirely unbothered by the chaos unfolding around her, took another sip of coffee. There was something about the way she sat there, so calm and in control, that made Zachary realize one undeniable truth: his daughter had already surpassed him. The Chambers family’s future, whatever it would be, was now in her hands.
